Recent data sets the Fed up to cut interest rates twice this year, JPMorgan's David Kelly said. The bank's chief global strategist predicted Fed rate cuts were coming in September and December. Yet, he warned that stocks are expensive, and investors should be wary of adding exposure at high valuations. The chief global strategist predicted central bankers would begin dialing back interest rates at the September policy meeting, with another cut likely in December. But rate cuts shouldn't be the signal for investors to flock to the stock market, Kelly said.

I started investing a lot of my savings in CDs this year when I saw how high APYs are right now. In order to make sure I'm getting the most out of my CD strategy when average CD rates are high, I decided to chat with two financial advisors to hear their best tips. "CD rates can vary wildly between banks, credit unions, and investment firms, so be sure to shop around whenever you are ready to buy one," he said. "The last thing you want to do is have to pull out your CD money right before it matures because you need to purchase new tires." Consider a CD ladderIn order to really maximize the current high APY offerings from CDs, Kovar suggested considering a CD ladder.

Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.

Under the University of Virginia Center for Politics' current projections, there are five true toss-up states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. The reality is that if Biden is stuck playing defense in states Democrats usually win, Trump's return to the White House will be a foregone conclusion. The only question then will be how many Electoral College votes would the former president win. "If Biden's position gets worse, that's when you see maybe a Virginia or New Mexico get in play," Kondik said. Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico, or Minnesota are not going to be the states that put Trump over 270.

In a year when the S & P 500 is touting a 15.5% advance, small-cap stocks look underwhelming – but investors shouldn't shy away from them, said Julie Biel, chief market strategist at Kayne Anderson Rudnick. "I don't think you want to avoid them — they're part of a balanced diet," said Biel, who is also a portfolio manager at the firm. The benchmark small-cap index Russell 2000 is up roughly 1% year to date, whereas the S & P 500 has rallied almost 16%, largely thanks to the strength of Nvidia and other megacap tech stocks. The S & P 400 mid-cap index has also fallen short of its large-cap counterpart, up a modest 5% in 2024. Biel herself manages a small- and mid-cap growth portfolio and takes a long-term investment approach.

Am I gentle parenting, or am I just a pushover?

I hadn't heard the term gentle parenting until our son was more than a year old. Eventually the algorithm caught on, and finally saw my first gentle parenting meme. There are plenty of would-be comedians producing not-that-funny videos featuring the phrase, "gentle parenting." This gentle parenting thing turned out to be a pretty big deal, so much bigger than my sleep deprived brain could grapple with. I wasn't trying to gentle parent, I'm just a people pleaser.

Meanwhile, Trump's policy proposals are headwinds for small caps and low-quality stocks. Instead, a Trump victory in November would best serve high-quality stocks — not the small caps or low-quality cyclicals that outperformed eight years ago. That day, energy, financials, industrials, materials and small caps all beat the broader market, Morgan Stanley said. Friday's small-cap outperformance following the debate was driven by expectations that this would repeat under Trump, Morgan Stanley said. Unlike 2016, investors today are focused on whether inflation and fiscal spending is going down.

"Brat," along with viral hits like Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" and Tinashe's "Nasty," have ushered in a season of pleasure and levity — what my friends and I have been calling a "smooth brain summer." The primary lure of pop music has always been escapism. Indeed, we've lived in a pop world dominated by Taylor Swift and refashioned in her likeness for several years. These peculiar bops form the perfect foundation for a "smooth brain summer" soundtrack — though please note that doesn't mean they're devoid of value or meaning.
