Teachers, too, are digging deeper to meet their classroom needs out of pocket. As more teachers quit over low salaries and other concerns, it’s exacerbating the ongoing teachers shortage in the United States. Consumer price inflation remains elevated, but has come down considerably since hitting 40-year highs last year. Last year, Gilliam spent about $1,000 stocking up on school supplies. Adjusted for inflation, teachers on average are making $3,644 less than they did 10 years ago, the NEA said.

While the rebound in China's factory conditions say be a sign official efforts to revive growth is starting to have some effect, manufacturing activity in most of Asia remained stagnant in August. "It's unlikely we'll see a sharp, quick rebound in China's economy. Asia has been among the few bright spots in the global economy, though persistent weakness in China cloud the outlook. It expects China's economy to expand 5.2% this year after a 3.0% increase in 2022. Factory activity also contracted in Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines last month, with Indonesia the outlier with a modest expansion, surveys showed.

Jonathan Ernst | ReutersWith record-high home prices and soaring mortgage interest rates, homeownership has become increasingly unaffordable — and hidden costs can surprise first-time buyers, experts say. Here are three of the most common surprise homeownership expenses and how to prepare for each one, according to experts. Property taxesAs a first-time homebuyer, it's easy to overlook property taxes since you've never paid those levies directly. Home maintenanceThe cost of home repairs and maintenance can also be a hidden expense for first-time homebuyers. As a first-time homebuyer, you need to make sure you have a sufficient cushion for surprises — I'd argue 5% of the home's purchase price at least.

Dollar General shopping carts are seen outside a store in Mount Rainier, Maryland, U.S., June 1, 2021. Shares of the company have fallen about 36% this year, making it one of the worst performers in the S&P 500 in 2023. In an effort to improve its business and lure in value-seeking customers, Dollar General has been investing to keep prices low for its everyday staples, which are typically less profitable. Meanwhile, sales in the home products and apparel segments, which carry higher margins, fell more than 7% each in the second quarter ended August 4. For the quarter, same-store sales fell 0.1%, compared with analysts' average estimate of a 1.08% rise, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Excluding items, Brown-Forman earned 48 cents per share, compared with a profit estimate of 53 cents per share, as per Refinitiv data. A 90-basis-point expansion in gross margin in the quarter was driven by a 250-basis-point benefit from higher pricing as well as a let up in supply-chain costs, Brown-Forman said on a post-earnings call. Its quarterly net sales rose 3%, to $1.04 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.05 billion. Still, Brown-Forman reaffirmed its annual target of organic net sales growth between 5% and 7% and said it expects demand trends to normalize after two years of strong growth.

But gross domestic product is still expanding at a pace well above what Fed officials regard as the non-inflationary growth rate of around 1.8%. REUTERS/Erin Scott/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 24 (Reuters) - Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) forecast annual profit largely below estimates on Thursday, owing to higher costs and a shift in spending towards lower-margin consumables. Chief Financial Officer Jeff Davis said the profit outlook was also impacted by unfavorable shrink trends and higher diesel fuel prices. Dollar Tree, like retailers Target (TGT.N) and Macy's (M.N), has been plagued by a rise in retail shrink, where inventory is lost, damaged, or stolen. Dollar Tree said it now expects to earn in the range of $5.78 to $6.08 per share in fiscal 2023, compared with its prior outlook of between $5.73 and $6.13.

A select group of our Club holdings have recently demonstrated durable pricing power to protect profits during what continues to be a high inflation environment. For companies, elevated inflation means higher input costs — higher costs on the goods and services required to run their businesses. In a recent note, UBS acknowledged, "Inflation may trend back toward the Fed's target sooner than expected reducing the relative advantage of companies with pricing power." In fact, UBS believes that "companies with pricing power have the potential to outperform the broader market in the months ahead." Microsoft's pricing power comes down to the simple fact that they have positioned themselves as a core backbone of global productivity.

Opinion | Elections Are Bad for Democracy
  + stars: | 2023-08-21 | by ( Adam Grant | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In a study of elections worldwide, candidates who were rated by experts as having high psychopathy scores actually did better at the ballot box. In the United States, presidents assessed as having psychopathic and narcissistic tendencies were more persuasive with the public than their peers. A common explanation is that they’re masters of fearless dominance and superficial charm, and we mistake their confidence for competence. Sadly, it starts early: Even kids who display narcissistic personality traits get more leadership nominations and claim to be better leaders. Eliminate voting, and candidates with dark triad traits would be less likely than they are now to rise to the top.

Lower Kuwaiti exports follow cuts from OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia that have pushed Brent prices close to $90 a barrel and left little wriggle room for Asia's refiners, reliant on the Middle East for more than two-thirds of crude imports. Chinese refiners, which have invested heavily in new plants designed to process sour oil, are especially exposed. Discounted oil from Russia has eased some of the pain, replacing some Kuwaiti supply, largely to China and India. Additionally, Kuwait's joint venture 230,000 bpd Duqm refinery in Oman is scheduled to start operation by end-2023, which could reduce Kuwaiti crude exports by a further 100,000 bpd to 200,000 bpd in 2024, the consultancies said. Formosa could replace Kuwaiti supply with grades such as Iraq's Basra Medium, Qatar's al-Shaheen and Oman crude, Lin said, adding it can also process U.S. light sweet crude.
