CNN —As rapidly warming global temperatures help push Antarctica’s sea ice to unprecedented lows, it’s threatening the very existence of one of the continent’s most iconic species: emperor penguins. Emperor penguins rely on stable sea ice attached to land for nesting and raising their chicks. For the past few years, scientists have been sounding the alarm about a steep decline in Antarctica’s sea ice. In mid-July, Antarctic sea ice reached the lowest level for this time of year since records began in 1945. Antarctic sea ice also helps regulate the planet’s temperature, reflecting the sun’s incoming energy back to space.

Four out of five emperor penguin colonies in Antarctica’s Bellingshausen Sea region very likely lost their chicks late last year because of disappearing sea ice underneath their breeding grounds, according to a new study. Parts of this coastal region had lost all of their sea ice by November, which was probably before penguin chicks had grown waterproof adult feathers and learned to swim. It’s the first time scientists have seen a widespread failure across multiple penguin colonies in a region, researchers said. “At the moment, we’re not sure if this is just a blip,” said Norman Ratcliffe, a seabird ecologist with the British Antarctic Survey and one of the authors of the new study. “But if this becomes a consistent phenomena in the longer term, clearly it’s going to have repercussions for the species.”

(Reuters) -Receding fears of a U.S. slowdown, surging bond yields and the robust performance of equities have gradually eroded the appeal of exchange-traded funds (ETF) backed by traditional safe-haven gold this year, despite sticky inflation. The biggest ETF, SPDR Gold Trust, saw holdings dwindle to pre-pandemic levels. [GOL/ETF]Investors typically buy gold during times of financial and economic uncertainty and rising inflation. [GOL/]“Gold has fallen into disfavour as a hedge against economic uncertainty for many institutional investors,” said Ross Norman, chief executive of Metals Daily. Equities have outperformed gold despite higher interest rates, while rival safe-haven Treasury bonds have attracted investors away from gold, which doesn’t earn any interest or dividends.

Ukrainian soldiers have speculated that Russian troops are fighting while high on amphetamines. Nazi troops were given methamphetamines during World War II to decrease fear and increase aggression. Germany even organized a rehab program for "overflown" pilots, or those who were addicted to the drug, Ohler said. The Russian military gave its soldiers vodka rations to get through World War II; France opted for red wine; and alcohol remained the "number one" drug for Germans during the war, Ohler said. "I would be surprised if drugs were not being used in the Ukrainian-Russian war," Ohler said.

The Portuguese federation announced his withdrawal on Thursday, noting the nagging injury had sidelined him from several events this season including the domestic championships. The 30-year-old Pichardo is the latest reigning champion to pull out of the global showcase event that begins on Saturday. United States 400 metres hurdles Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone said last week that she would miss the worlds due to a "minor knee issue."

When Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and over a dozen of his allies for their attempt to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results, she did something ingenious. In contrast to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s latest laser-focused federal indictment of Mr. Trump, Ms. Willis charges a wide range of conspirators from the Oval Office to low-level Georgia G.O.P. functionaries and is the first to plumb the full depths, through a state-focused bathyscope, of the conspiracy. Her case also provides other important complements to the federal matter: Unlike Mr. Smith’s case, which will almost certainly not be broadcast because of federal standards, hers will almost certainly be televised, and should Mr. Trump or another Republican win the White House, Ms. Willis’s case cannot be immediately pardoned away. It is a reminder of the genius of American federalism: When our democracy is threatened, states have an indispensable part to play in protecting it.

Norman produced a memorable performance to triumph in Eugene last year after a succession of career disappointments, including a shock fifth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympic final. "Unfortunately I will not be defending my title at the 2023 World champs," Norman said in an Instagram post. Norman had scarcely competed this year and withdrew from the LA Grand Prix in May after finishing eighth in the 200m at the Doha Diamond League meet. McLaughlin-Levrone, who broke her own world record to win the 400m hurdles last year, had been expected to compete in the flat event. In the fall of 2021, an acquaintance of Alex Norman, the founder of a cannabis apparel and lifestyle brand called Budega NYC, reached out to congratulate him on making a deal to open several dispensaries in Southern California. There was just one problem, Mr. Norman said: “It wasn’t me.”Instead, an international conglomerate had claimed the Budega name, which Mr. Norman, 50, said was a nod to the longstanding role of New York’s neighborhood bodegas in supplying weed before legalization. It was the first of a series of copycats that have forced Mr. Norman, who lives in Brooklyn, to decide whether to wage costly legal battles to defend his brand, work out deals to coexist or start over with a new name. Cases like his have played out across the country as states legalize cannabis and allow businesses to open stores and release products under similar-sounding names. Jessica Gonzalez, a cannabis and trademark attorney, said the trend will only accelerate if the federal government legalizes cannabis and companies begin competing for national dominance.

Among those inspired by the solitude and natural wonder they found there were the playwrights Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams, painters Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, novelists Jack Kerouac and Norman Mailer and poets E.E. “A grand place to be alone and undisturbed,” O’Neill once said of his hideaway there. “I’m ashamed that the Park Service would try to capitalize on it, without realizing the point of the shacks was to get away from civilization, from capitalism.”The Park Service set no limit on financial offers from bidders. The structures’ use must be private and residential, not commercial; modern upgrades are not allowed, and lease holders will bear the full costs of their upkeep. The agency declined to say how many bids were submitted by the July deadline, or when it will notify the winners.

The South Korean researchers last week said they found a superconductor that works at room temperature, which has long been considered a holy grail for scientists in the field. The South Korean researchers published two papers - one initial paper with three authors and a second, more detailed paper with six authors that included only two of the authors from the first paper. The gold standard for proof of discovery is other labs reliably replicating the South Korean researchers' findings. But another team, from Qufu Normal University, said they did not observe zero resistance, one of required characteristics of a superconductor. On Thursday, South Korean experts said they would set up a committee to verify the claims.

Nicholas Rossi, a convicted sex offender who faked his own death and later surfaced in Glasgow, can be extradited to the United States from Scotland to face sexual assault charges in Utah, a court ruled on Wednesday. Mr. Rossi, 36, traveled from the United States to Ireland or Britain in 2017, leaving behind allegations of rape and domestic violence, according to the decision by Sheriff Norman McFadyen in Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Mr. Rossi has used several aliases over the years, including Nicholas Alahverdian, the name he was using when he faked his death in Rhode Island in 2020. He identified himself as Arthur Knight, an Irishman who had never been to the United States, during court hearings in Scotland after his arrest there in December 2021. Sheriff McFadyen said in his 21-page decision that the evidence Mr. Rossi provided about himself in his defense could not be trusted unless it was independently supported.

CNN —A Scottish court ruled Wednesday that a rape suspect who has been accused of faking his own death can be extradited to the US to face charges, according to UK news agency PA Media. On Wednesday, Sheriff Norman McFadyen told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that Rossi’s extradition “would be compatible with the Convention rights within the meaning of the Human Rights Act 1998,” PA Media reported. McFadyen told the court that he will next send Rossi’s case to Scottish ministers “for their decision whether he is to be extradited,” according to PA Media. Rossi’s lawyer Mungo Bovey had asserted in his closing speech that Rossi’s extradition to the US would serve as a “flagrant breach” of his human rights. Public prosecutor Alan Cameron countered this claim, telling the court there was no evidence that Rossi suffered any conditions that would hinder his extradition, according to PA Media.
