There wasn't anywhere else I'd thought about living — until I went to see a friend in Lake Chapala. Read previewIt is no secret that China's shipbuilding capacity is unmatched on the world stage and that its shipyards are churning out new warships at a breakneck pace. China's shipbuilding industry has over 230 times the capacity of the US, according to recent estimates from the Office of Naval Intelligence, representing about 50% of the total global shipbuilding capacity. The shipyards building China's navyDalian is another significant Chinese shipyard and was site of production for the CNS Shandong aircraft carrier. The China Power Project at CSIS has carefully documented developments in Chinese shipbuilding, including work at the yards and new vessels. In today’s edition, we look at how Donald Trump is handling the political fallout from CNN's bombshell report on North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. “North Carolina is a vital part of that plan. Additionally, Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. The political fallout from Robinson’s past comments could be particularly tough for Trump because of the importance of North Carolina as one of seven key swing states on the presidential map. The DNC launched digital ads and billboards featuring Trump heaping praise on Robinson, while a new Harris campaign ad links Trump to Robinson’s past anti-abortion comments.

This is not the first time the Republican presidential nominee has posted a fake image in an effort to bolster his campaign. The Harris campaign declined to comment. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a 2020 X post, Harris praised Combs for a town hall he led on the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on Black communities. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who endorsed Trump in July, shared a fake Harris ad that uses a manipulated version of the vice president’s voice.

Hussein Malla / AP“We have examples where supply chains were compromised in very elaborate, long lasting, super sophisticated ways for espionage. This may be the first supply chain attack that actually really deserves to be called a supply chain attack,” said Thomas Rid, a Johns Hopkins University professor who studies the history of intelligence operations. “Supply chain compromises are tried and true in intelligence work,” said Harding, who is the director of the Intelligence, National Security, and Technology Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “I literally cannot think of a single example that is unclassified.”But she said the combined scope, planning and violence behind the pager and walkie-talkie operation made it a unique incident in the history of supply chain compromises. While the attack in Lebanon broke with spy agencies’ tradition by using a supply chain for an attack rather than for espionage, it could benefit Israel’s military objectives and have larger political implications.

Some lawmakers have called for more Secret Service funding, while others said the Secret Service could be more effective by shifting resources. But if it's signed into law, Trump and Harris would be granted the same standard of Secret Security protection as President Joe Biden. Biden said this week that the Secret Service "needs more help" and called on Congress to act. And both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have committed to getting the Secret Service what they need. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he wants the Secret Service to provide “clarification of what the current practices are” to confirm that.

Jailers put accused sex trafficker Sean "Diddy" Combs on a "procedural" suicide watch, as the music mogul awaits trial on three felony counts tied to more than a decade of alleged abuse, a source said. The source described this suicide watch as “procedural with high profile clients." Prosecutors accused the famed rapper of using his money and power to arrange for degrading, and at times physically abusive, sex acts called "freak offs." These hours- and days-long sex acts were produced, directed and recorded by Combs who allegedly "threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires,” prosecutors said. Federal agent claimed they seized more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and other lubricants from Combs’ homes that were used in these sex acts.

Over the years, Israel has viewed “targeted killings” as a way to deter attacks on the county, fuel fear among its enemies and exact revenge. Iran’s nuclear program is closer to building a bomb than ever, even after several nuclear scientists were killed, he said. But the Mossad operation dismayed Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who demanded the resignation of the spy service’s chief. Almost four decades later, Israel killed a major Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a Dubai hotel in a complex plot involving more than two dozen Mossad operatives. In an echo of this week’s attacks in Lebanon, Israel killed a Hamas bombmaker, Yahya Ayyash, in 1996 with a cellphone outfitted with explosives.

A Republican-controlled chamber could thwart Harris’ nominees to fill out her administration and the courts, along with her legislative agenda. Top Senate Republicans told NBC News she would need their sign-off to secure votes on any judicial nominees, including for the Supreme Court. The prospect of a split Congress looms over a possible Harris win even if Democrats have a strong year and sweep every swing state. And if it’s a GOP-led Senate, Republicans would control a floor vote. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, would have seniority to be the next Judiciary Committee chair and said he intends to claim the position if Republicans win control.

BEIJING — China and Japan reached a consensus in August on the discharge of radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant, the Chinese foreign ministry said Friday, bringing to an end a diplomatic dispute that had rumbled on for over two years. Beijing called the release “a major nuclear safety issue with cross-border implications,” when Tokyo started discharging treated radioactive water from the site in August 2023. It also announced a blanket ban on all aquatic products from Japan. But Mao Ning, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, later said that both countries reaching consensus “does not mean that China will immediately resume imports of Japanese aquatic products,” at a regular news conference in Beijing. “We will carry out technical consultations with the Japanese side and gradually resume the import of Japanese aquatic products,” she added.

Pagers, devices that are used every day as a crucial form of communication for health care professionals, became a deadly weapon Tuesday as thousands of them simultaneously exploded in Lebanon, killing 37 people and injuring thousands. The explosions targeted the militant and political group Hezbollah, after the devices had reportedly begun beeping and heating up. Pagers are wireless communication devices that receive radio signals from short- or long-range paging networks. The pagers that exploded in Lebanon were made to appear as if they were Gold Apollo’s AR-924 pagers, but The New York Times reported that they were actually created by Israeli intelligence workers. Following the explosions on Tuesday, Hezbollah told Al Jazeera that the “treacherous and criminal enemy will certainly be punished for this aggressive act.”How did the pagers explode?
