WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday handed a loss to Republicans by allowing Pennsylvania voters who sent mail-in ballots that were flagged as being potentially defective to submit a separate provisional in-person ballot. The justices rejected, with no noted dissents, a Republican request to put on hold a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling from last week. The Supreme Court action does not definitively resolve the legal issue, which could yet return to the justices. Many of Pennsylvania's counties, which administer elections, already allowed for voters to cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots lacked a secrecy envelope even before the recent state Supreme Court ruling. Genser and Matis lost in a trial court, but an intermediate appeals court and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in their favor, prompting Republicans to appeal again to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk, an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the campaign trail, the White House and Capitol Hill. The final undecided voters could sway the election. But in a narrowly divided presidential election, voters who have put off making a decision until the last minute could find themselves with the power to decide the future of the country. Late-deciding voters broke for Trump in 2020 and 2016, with some analysts and strategists in both campaigns crediting them for electing Trump eight years ago. And it was true in 2020, when the pandemic and debates played an oversize role in the election featuring Trump and Joe Biden.

But the motivation for his first 26.2 mile race is personal: to advocate for gun violence prevention. Bosley and his family have dedicated their lives to stopping gun violence and helping loved ones of those lost to it. While rates of gun violence in Chicago have decreased in recent years, it’s still an ongoing problem. Data from the Chicago Police Department revealed the city’s gun violence and homicide rates dropped by 13% in 2023 to pre-pandemic levels. After Harris became the nominee, support from Asian American women jumped to 72%. Support from Asian American men also increased, but not as drastically, sitting now at 59%. Though not nearly as strong as Harris’ pull on Asian women, there are factors that might be siphoning Asian men, Ramakrishnan said. Trump has made marginal gains among Asian men too, he said, but Harris’ draw on both groups far outweighs it. “AAPI women and South Asian women view abortion access as health care,” said Varun Nikore, executive director of the nonprofit AAPI Victory Alliance.

Two starkly different House candidates, in separate races, personify the intensifying ideological partitioning occurring within the once strongly Democratic constituency of Latino voters, whose numbers are growing. Their highly competitive races, along with a few other California congressional races, have pushed Latino voters to the front lines of the bitter fight for control of the House. “We have centered on Latino voters in our campaign,” said Whitesides, whose wife is of Cuban and Salvadoran heritage. In the same poll, 52% of Latino voters in District 27 said they support Whitesides, compared to 24% for Garcia and 24% completely undecided. But the former president, no stranger to personal attacks, reserved his most violent comments for former Rep. Liz Cheney. In a lengthy and uncompromising riff on Cheney, Trump seemed to insinuate that the former congresswoman would be less of a “war hawk” — as Trump referred to her — if she was in a war herself with guns “trained on her face.”“She’s a radical war hawk. You know when the guns are trained on her face — you know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building,” Trump continued. In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the relationship between Trump and Cheney frayed. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have both talked about the importance of making childcare more affordable. Below are three elements of the childcare equation and what the Harris and the Trump camps have either proposed or already done. Child tax creditsTrump and Harris have both proposed expanding the child tax credit, which currently provides up to $2,000 per child. Harris' child tax credit policy would restore the enhanced pandemic-era credit, giving parents up to $3,600 annually per child, with the amount dependent on a child's age and family income. The US's pandemic-era child tax credit expired at the end of 2021 because Republicans in Congress opposed it.

Expect the unexpected in the jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

“She has been pretty resistant to having those conversations,” said one senior Democrat familiar with the pre-election discussions with the vice president. While Harris’ transition team has been operating out of government-provided offices in Washington, Trump’s transition team is working from Manhattan and the Willard Hotel in Washington. A Harris victory would trigger the first same-party transition since 1989, when President Ronald Reagan handed off the presidency to his vice president, George H.W. Yet the extent to which Harris would retain members of the Biden administration is largely unknown. While Harris has maintained relationships with individual Cabinet and administration officials, some believe she will prefer to start anew with her own team.

Washington CNN —The United States that Donald Trump describes in his rally speeches would be pretty bad if it actually existed. For the third consecutive presidential election, the Republican presidential nominee is running a relentlessly dishonest campaign for the world’s most powerful office. President Joe Biden, Trump’s initial opponent in this election, and Harris, Trump’s current opponent, certainly don’t. Nine years into Trump’s political career, daily fact-checking still isn’t happening enough. No matter what CNN writes, no matter how many “Pinocchios” The Washington Post awards him, he knows that far more of his supporters will hear the uncorrected false claim – through social media, pro-Trump media outlets and, yes, even many mainstream media outlets – than hear the truth.

The S&P 500 enjoyed a compound annual growth rate of 12.1% from Trump’s surprise election in November 2016 through Biden’s 2020 victory, according to CFRA. “The Trump market was so strong because of a combination of very low inflation, very low interest rates and tax cuts,” said Stovall. The S&P 500’s growth rate under Democrats is 10% compared with 6.7% under Republicans, according to CFRA. In those six years since 1945, where such a dynamic has been in place, the S&P 500 has enjoyed a sizzling growth rate of 16.8%. Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned around southwestern states this week as they sought to shore up the Latino vote with only five days until Election Day. Latino voters account for %14.7 of all eligible voters in the upcoming election, according to Pew Research Center. New Mexico, where Trump campaigned on Thursday, has the highest share of Latino voters with around 45% the population. The states with the next largest share of Latino voters include California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada. Although Democrats tend to have a historical advantage among Latino voters, that advantage has declined over the past four presidential cycles, according to a national NBC News/Telemundo/CNBC poll from September, especially as Trump makes strides with Latino men.

PHOENIX — Vice President Kamala Harris said Thursday that former President Donald Trump's remarks this week about protecting women whether they "like it or not" is another sign of how he "devalues" women. The Trump campaign did not immediately provide a comment on Harris' remarks. Trump on Wednesday said that his "people" had instructed him not to say that he wanted to "protect the women." In addressing Biden's comments, Harris pointed to Trump's rhetoric about "the enemy from within" and comparing the U.S. to a "garbage can." When asked by NBC News what Harris thinks her late mother would say to her in the final days before the election, Harris smiled.
