The student gunman in a small-town Iowa school shooting in January in which two people were killed and several others injured was known to have a fascination with school shooters and exhibited a number of unreported “warning signs,” the Iowa Public Safety Department said Friday. “There is significant evidence of this shooter’s fascination with prior school shootings” and there was also evidence of “copycat behavior” in his actions, Stephan Bayens, commissioner of the Iowa Public Safety Department, said in a news conference. The evidence bears that out.”“Those concerns, along with a number of other warning signs, were unreported or were otherwise unrecognized,” Bayens said. He said the shooter exhibited “broad behavioral issues” and mental health concerns that were present years before the shooting. The shooter was “suicidal coupled with a homicidal intention to take others with him in an effort to gain notoriety,” Bayens said.

But although the Italian government’s digital nomad visa launched in April 2024, so far there have been few accounts of people securing one. Italy’s digital nomad visa scheme was first announced in 2022 and launched in April 2024. Apart from anything else, she had a full-time job in San Francisco at the time. Although the website warned of a minimum four-month wait time, she saw an available slot at the San Francisco consulate for 10 days later. HONG KONG — China is strengthening enforcement with nations such as the United States to combat smuggling and other serious crimes, state media reported Friday, citing the country’s National Immigration Administration. Smugglers and cross-border criminal groups at home and abroad have recently been “deceiving some people to participate in smuggling activities,” the administration said, without giving a specific time period or clarifying whether the smuggling involved goods, people or both. The United States has this year deported Chinese people who sought to enter the country illegally back to China with charter flights. The difficulty of obtaining U.S. visas and the economic aftershocks of China’s Covid-19 lockdowns led to a sharp increase in Chinese nationals presenting at the U.S.-Mexico border. That is more than the 52,700 who crossed in the entire 2023 fiscal year that ended in October.

LAS VEGAS — GOP candidate Sam Brown spent Thursday’s Nevada Senate debate taking shots at Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen, as he still faces a polling deficit with Election Day creeping nearer. In contrast, Rosen spent the evening focusing largely on her own track record and roots in Nevada, hoping to stay above the fray and ride her polling lead. “It’s interesting that Senator Rosen would mention a desire to want to fine greedy corporations,” said Brown. And when moderators asked Rosen and Brown if Congress should do an independent investigation into UFOs, Rosen answered the question. Fearing that such rights could be undone in the future, reproductive rights advocates garnered enough signatures this summer to put on the ballot a measure to enshrine abortion rights into their state’s constitution.

At a town hall hosted at a high school outside Philadelphia, Musk referred to the false conspiracy theory that Dominion Voting Systems was part of a plot to rig U.S. elections in recent years. There’s always this question of, say, the Dominion voting machines. Fact: Hand counts and audits of such paper ballots have repeatedly proven that Dominion machines produce accurate results. Studies and investigations have found that there’s no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the U.S. When voter fraud has occurred, prosecutors have successfully brought cases against perpetrators including in a highly publicized fraud scheme in North Carolina.

WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris’ campaign will launch a new television ad Thursday aimed at linking the three words the vice president has used to describe Donald Trump lately — unhinged, unstable and unchecked — with the policy implications voters might see if the former president returns to office. The Harris campaign has increasingly sought to link Trump’s recent behavior and comments with questions about his mental acuity and refusal to release recent medical records. “One has to ask, what is Donald Trump trying to hide? Earlier this month, the Harris campaign unveiled a digital ad slamming vice presidential nominee J.D. Trump’s campaign responded to the ad by saying that he is a “plain speaker” who talks about issues like the economy and immigration.

Often the candy and fruit vendors are migrant women, sometimes seen with their young children in tow. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has not submitted to many interviews with journalists during her short presidential campaign, and certainly none with conservative media. When Baier asked if this was an evolution in her thinking, Harris pointed to her record as a prosecutor taking on transnational criminal organizations. From immigration, Baier pivoted to the wedge topic of gender. When Baier asked if there were concerns about Biden’s abilities raised, Harris said:Bret, Joe Biden is not on the ballot. And Donald Trump is.

In the end, on Wednesday, both Harris and Fox News probably got what they wanted. But before the interview, Harris spokesman Ian Sams explained her thinking. If only a few thousand Fox viewers or traditional conservatives swapped sides, it could push some swing states in the vice president’s direction. Still, the risk for Harris is that her display in her first formal Fox interview could alienate some of those voters. It’s taken her several months to arrive at the assurance that she’d strike a strong contrast with Biden’s administration, which she unveiled in the Fox interview.

US efforts to produce semiconductor chips will continue regardless of who wins the election. AdvertisementNo matter who wins the presidential election this November, President Joe Biden can rest easy knowing one thing: The US's chip manufacturing push isn't going anywhere. The US has seen its share of overall chip production fall from 37% of the world's supply in 1990 to 12%. While many factories remain under construction, the federal funding has already helped boost US chip production. According to a report published last year by the trade and lobbying group Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics, the US semiconductor industry will face a shortage of 67,000 workers by 2030, including technicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier chose one way when interviewing former President Donald Trump last year, and a very different way when interviewing Vice President Kamala Harris this week in her first formal sit-down with the right-wing network. However, Baier did not talk over Trump nearly as much as he interrupted Harris. At times, Baier sounded exasperated, as when Trump claimed he won the 2020 election. Overall, Baier interrupted Harris at least 38 times in 27 minutes, about twice as often as Baier interjected with Trump (at least 28 times in 36 minutes). “When did you first notice that President Biden’s mental faculties appeared diminished?” Baier asked.

Vice President Kamala Harris may not get another debate with former President Donald J. Trump, but on Wednesday, she got one with Bret Baier. In an interview that turned contentious almost the instant it began, Mr. Baier, Fox News’s chief political anchor, repeatedly pressed the Democratic presidential nominee on illegal immigration, taxpayer support for gender-transition surgery and other areas that closely aligned with Mr. Trump’s regular attacks against her. At one point, Mr. Baier wondered if the vice president considered Mr. Trump’s supporters “stupid.” (“I would never say that about the American people,” she replied.) Mr. Baier’s aggressive demeanor was consistent with the kind of tough coverage of Ms. Harris that blankets Fox News’s daily programming. Lots of viewers were surely eager to hear how she would respond when confronted head-on.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday repeated his false claim that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, are eating their neighbors’ pets, using a town hall with undecided Latino voters to prop up misinformation that has been rejected by local and statewide leaders from both parties. Trump has made inroads with Hispanic voters, but Vice President Kamala Harris still has an advantage – albeit slimmer than Joe Biden’s in 2020 – with that demographic. The former president on Wednesday largely ignored the detailed questions from the audience, frequently pivoting to attacks on undocumented immigrants. Trump did not respond directly, but – after acknowledging he’s never been to the city – said he is planning a visit. “We had the strongest border we’ve ever had in the history, recorded history of our country,” Trump said when questioned about his border plan.

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris arrives for a campaign event at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan, October 4, 2024. Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden and bashed her Republican presidential rival Donald Trump in a heated interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier. The 26-minute interview was focused heavily on the issue of immigration, and Harris again blamed Trump for killing a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing the crisis at the southern border. The interview was tense from the first exchange, when Baier repeatedly interrupted Harris' opening answer about immigration.
