What is suggested by the remarkable “birth/rebirth” is how Shelley’s story—its mythos, at any rate—can itself be brought back to vibrant life, time after time, by torquing modern medicine into increasingly plausible horror. The Shelley blueprint—which locates the fear factor in every scientific leap that humans make as they inevitably play God—is always paved with good scientific intentions. Rose and Celie mean well.

The team behind xAI, which launched in July this year, comes from Google's DeepMind, the Windows parent, and other top AI research firms. Though Musk-owned X, the social media firm formerly known as Twitter, and xAI are separate, the companies work closely together. Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle (ORCL.N) and a self-described close friend of Musk, said in September that xAI had signed a contract to train its AI model on Oracle's cloud.
