Here, we've curated 30 of our favorite corners, including the Thu Bon River, which flows through central Vietnam. Police began exhuming bodies on Friday, said Charles Kamau, a detective in the nearby town of Malindi, without giving further details. The leader of the church, Paul Mackenzie, was arrested following a tip-off that also suggested the existence of shallow graves belonging to at least 31 of Mackenzie's followers. Police said the 15 rescued worshippers had been told to starve themselves to death so they could meet their creator. Matthew Shipeta from Haki Africa, a human rights group, said he had seen at least 15 shallow graves in the forest. "Personally I have visited about 18 children's graves," Mikali told Citizen TV.

But perhaps the most recognizable of the tunes was one with an unrecognizable title, written by someone whose name you probably haven’t heard, even though billions of people might be familiar with his work.

In 2018, higher-ups at his job handed a day of remote work out as a reward. But as 2020 rolled in and sent everyone home, he discovered he loved full-time remote work even more. He loved remote work for the same reasons he thinks other people do: more time to concentrate, and fewer meetings. But remote work also calls into question the purpose of a boss, he said. "I think a lot of people that have exposure to remote work will say, 'Hey, that worked,'" Dennis said.
All 15 were members of the Good News International Church in the coastal county of Kilifi, police said. "In the process of rescuing the victims, four of them died," police said in an incident report. Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. (He gave the Biden administration a week to appeal the ruling before it goes into effect. Thus, the week that began with Trump facing a judge in Manhattan ended with a Trump-appointed judge overturning more than two decades of medical practice. “They go far too fast to be safe on the sidewalk” and aren’t right for bike lanes or roads either.
Located just three miles from The Masters venue, the historically Black district lay adjacent to Augusta Country Club. Eventually, many would hop across Rae’s Creek to begin work at Augusta National. A “good bag” at Augusta National would pay up to $5, Maben said, offering $20 for a particularly lucrative day’s labor. The 1983 Masters saw the first White caddies walk the greens at the major, with just 19 Black caddies on the bag, Clayton said. This year, the Lucy Craft Laney Museum will put the legacy of Augusta’s Black caddies – quite literally – center stage.

Opinion | Why Does Our Society Produce So Many Mass Murderers?
  + stars: | 2023-04-03 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:I strongly support common-sense measures such as banning military-style assault weapons, for heaven’s sake. But I wonder if we are failing to address the deeper root of these recurring, nightmarish tragedies: How is it that our society continues to produce such highly disturbed mass murderers on such a regular basis? And why does so much of the “entertainment” in our society present scenes of violence? A letter like this cannot begin to address these questions, but along with practical solutions like banning assault weapons, don’t we need to do some serious national soul-searching? Could we take a deeper look into our hearts and minds, and our way of life, to seek out the deeper, human causes of these endlessly recurring, horrific tragedies?
Trump is likely to be fingerprinted, swabbed for the state DNA database, and photographed for his mugshot. Trump has been indicted in the Manhattan district attorney's five-year investigation into his personal and business finances, Insider reported Thursday, but he'll be treated like any defendant moving forward — with many key exceptions. "That's called 'walking it through,'" explains Diana Florence, a former white-collar crime prosecutor for the Manhattan district attorney's office. That's what typically happens in white-collar indictments, said Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a former chief assistant with the Manhattan district attorney's office. But even if Trump does need to surrender in person, Secret Service would likely give the perp walk a hard pass.
Stocks that rallied Tuesday in response to "less than stellar" quarterly reports could bode well for earnings season, CNBC's Jim Cramer said. Cramer pointed to three companies that reported within the last 24 hours as examples: Spice company McCormick , Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger parent company PVH and Walgreens . The company reported earnings growth of 10%, above the 8.9% consensus number. Walgreens' rally was also "totally baffling," Cramer said, because it reported an adjusted operating income of $1.2 billion that missed consensus estimates. Cramer said he thinks these companies are representative of the broader market.
Jeremy Grantham warned the S&P 500 could tank by up to 50% as the "everything bubble" bursts. Grantham advised against holding US stocks for now, and slammed the Fed for inflating asset bubbles. Grantham blasted the Federal Reserve for inflating asset bubbles time and again, and warned investors against holding US stocks in the short run. And yet, the Nasdaq went down 82%, Amazon went down 92%, and the S&P went down 50%. (Grantham was discussing how the the biggest asset bubbles form.)
Beth Galetti, the company's HR head, formally responded to a letter that gathered ~30,000 employee signatures. Galetti wrote in her email that Amazon's guiding principle is to "make our customers' lives better and easier every day." My colleague Eugene Kim obtained Galetti's full email and walks us through how Amazon employees feel about the response. JERUSALEM, March 24 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers flocked to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque on the first Friday of Ramadan for noon prayers, which passed peacefully amid tight security imposed after months of escalating tension and violence. "I cannot describe to you how happy I am to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque. I'm 50 years old and they only recently removed the security ban that had prevented me from coming here," said Nasser Abu Saleh, a resident of the West Bank city of Hebron. The Muslim Waqf, custodians who manage the site which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque, said around 100,000 people had visited for the first Friday prayers of Ramadan. You can't just wipe out a bank and about $170 billion in SVB deposits and expect to see business as normal in the country. If you are a depositor, let's just say you aren't going to be so foolish as to concentrate your deposits going forward. But it did have a very low retail share of deposits, like SVB, so perhaps that may have had something to do with it. Salah rubbed salt into United wounds with a close-range effort to score a record 129th Premier League goal for the Merseyside club, taking him past the mark of Robbie Fowler. Liverpool had thrashed United 4-0 at Anfield last April but considering the reversal of fortunes for the two clubs since, with United on the rise and Liverpool off the pace, this result was a major surprise. Liverpool's fourth win in five league matches lifted them above Newcastle United into fifth on 42 points, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand. "Today you could see the energy levels and everything was back, although to be fair the last few Premier League games had shown we were on the right path." Liverpool's previous biggest win over United was a 7-1 victory in 1895 when both clubs were in the second tier.
Art Cashin says the Federal Reserve can't go back to higher interest rate hikes after easing down. They went from 50 [basis points] down to 25. That follows Thursday comments from Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic who said he's "firmly" in favor of 25 basis point rate hikes , instead of the 50 basis point increase some other Fed officials have called for. Regardless, Cashin said he expects trouble ahead for markets, and urged investors to keep an eye on some technical levels. "It looks to me like the oversold bounce that we got out of Salesforce yesterday, the influence on the market might carry on until maybe Tuesday of next week," Cashin said.
Her rise was tied to a period of reinvention for the wine world during which natural wine conquered millennial taste buds and became ubiquitous on menus across the US. Marissa Ross, Bon Appétit's wine editor from 2016 to 2020, often posted pictures of herself chugging straight from the bottle — a technique she called "The Ross test." "Natural wine," a nebulous term that generally refers to wine made with minimal intervention and without additives like sulfites, was tentatively entering the American wine world. Many in the wine world took the idea that you didn't have to be educated to know about wine as a personal insult. When she first told BA that she planned to cover only natural wines, Ross said, Rapoport called to try to change her mind.
