☆ Vatican Bank fires couple whose marriage breached new workplace ban

CNN —The Vatican Bank has fired two employees whose recent wedding violates a newly-introduced ban on marriages between staff. The bank said that its policy is designed to prevent conflicts of interest at an institution with only around 100 employees, all of whom work at the same location. Sgro said the couple, who have three children, were told that their employment had been terminated on October 1. The Vatican Bank has a history of financial scandals and in 2013 Pope Francis set up an expert committee to recommend reforms to the economic and administrative structures of the Holy See to combat the problem. He’s the first cardinal to be convicted and sentenced by a Vatican court.

CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Yet the tree, which is related to the myrrh tree that’s famed for its resin, never gave off any kind of scent.

Nuon Toeun is neither an opposition leader nor a well-known activist. Radio Free Asia said Nuon Toeun was a supporter of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, which was dissolved ahead of the 2018 general election as part of a crackdown on the opposition. The Khmer Movement for Democracy, a movement formed by opposition leaders in exile, condemned Nuon Toeun’s deportation from Malaysia. London CNN —A medallion containing some of the original mold involved in the discovery of penicillin is expected to fetch up to $50,000 when it goes up for auction later this month. The mold medallion will be auctioned by Bonhams later this month. It is expected to fetch $30,000-$50,000 in an online auction that runs from October 13 to 23. The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. The NTSB said that Boeing's 737 flight manual instructs pilots facing a jammed rudder to overpower the system by applying "maximum force." Their Max family has been plagued by safety concerns since the two crashes of its 737 Max jetliners in 2018 and 2019 that killed a total of 346 people. Some bombshell allegations were publicized in a sprawling 204-page report released on June 17 by the Senate subcommittee that investigated Boeing's safety and quality practices.
