In July, plant scientists at the International Botanical Congress in Madrid changed a scientific name shared by about 200 different plant species. For centuries, the word “caffra” was used in the scientific names of many plants to denote that they grew in Africa. Botanists in the region have objected to using the term to refer to African plants. The Summary Studies have found that wildfire smoke negatively affects brain health. “A lot of the research on wildfire smoke has historically focused on our lungs and our hearts,” said Stephanie Cleland, an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University who studies the health impacts of wildfire smoke. Scientists think the reason wildfire smoke affects the brain is that the tiny particles within it can cross the barrier between the bloodstream and the brain, causing inflammation in the central nervous system. Other research published the same year showed that exposure to wildfire smoke during the school year reduced students’ test scores relative to a year with no smoke. “Last summer completely changed our conversation around who’s exposed to wildfire smoke,” she said.

Families for some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a U.S. judge should reject the planemaker's proposed plea deal with the Justice Department and the government should seek a much higher fine. Spokespeople for Boeing and the Justice Department did not immediately comment on the families' filings. The DOJ told Boeing earlier this month it could accept a settlement that branded the planemaker a felon or fight the charge in court. The Justice Department has a separate criminal probe ongoing into the Alaska Airlines jet that was missing four key bolts. The company's board -- including new CEO -- must meet with the victims' families within four months of sentencing.

About 80 merchants gathered on Monday on the 30th floor of the Guangzhou office building, with some eventually gaining entry to the company premises, Chinese outlet Yicai reported. The China Securities Journal, a Beijing-based outlet run by state agency Xinhua, wrote that merchants had approached the Guangzhou office about 10 times in July over their complaints. On China's social media, anger is mounting toward what is being seen as Western shoppers taking advantage of Chinese merchants. "Foreigners can buy products from Chinese merchants, receive the goods, and not spend any money," wrote one blogger based in Hebei.

Even though many megacap tech stocks continue to nose dive, CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday told investors not to forget they are still solid companies. "Never forget, though, that you're selling winners, actually bona fide winners, for stocks that were losers just two weeks ago. That's why Wall Street had favored them over the past few years as the Fed kept rates high to combat stubborn inflation, he continued. For now, Cramer argued, Big Tech outfits are "just very strong businesses with suddenly very bad stocks." "The Magnificent Seven, the companies, will be doing just fine regardless of where the Fed takes interest rates," Cramer said.
