Perplexity AI on Tuesday debuted a revenue-sharing model for publishers after more than a month of plagiarism accusations. Media outlets and content platforms including Fortune, Time, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, Der Spiegel and WordPress.com are the first to join the company's "Publishers Program." Under the new partner program, any time a user asks a question and Perplexity generates advertising revenue from citing one of the publisher's articles in its answer, Perplexity will share a flat percentage of that revenue. "Some of it grew out of conversations we were having with publishers about integrating Perplexity APIs and technology into their products," Shevelenko said. But not all news organizations are gearing up for a fight, and some are instead joining forces with AI startups like OpenAI, Perplexity and others.

Washington CNN —Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe provided new details about the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on Tuesday, delivering forceful testimony at a Senate hearing about the agency’s failures earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania. But at the joint hearing of the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees, Rowe also highlighted the missteps of local law enforcement on July 13, when the former president was shot. Moving forward, Rowe told the committees, his agency will avoid assuming local law enforcement agencies are fully capable of fulfilling their role in protecting an event. Rowe told the lawmakers that local law enforcement was positioned in a nearby building and should have had a clear line of sight of Crooks on the roof. Tobra claimed that the account in question was “pro-Biden.”The Gab account has also not been conclusively connected to Crooks.

Bitcoin pushing further into the mainstream could be laying the groundwork for crypto stock Coinbase to join the S & P 500 , according to Oppenheimer. "We believe 1) increasing regulatory clarity, and 2) digital asset becoming mainstream can increase the chance that COIN will be included in S & P 500," he added. Lau has an outperform rating on Coinbase and a price target of $282, which implies a roughly 12% increase from current levels. It's gained about 160% in the past year, outperforming the S & P 500 in that time. Over the pas three years, however, shares are up just 3%, while the S & P 500 has gained 23%.

Read previewThe usual orders battle between Airbus and Boeing played second fiddle to supply-chain issues at last week's Farnborough Airshow. AdvertisementLast month, Airbus reduced its delivery targets, citing supply chain issues, which saw its stock drop as much as 11%. The day before the show, Guillaume Faury, the Airbus CEO, told the media the planemaker was having "important discussions" with some key suppliers as it was facing "a bit of an unexpected challenge." Frustrations with the supply chain were evident among airline bosses speaking at a summit on the first day of the airshow. Paris CNN —The rain that drenched Friday’s opening ceremony may have moved out of Paris, but its effects are still being felt in the River Seine, with water quality concerns throwing the triathlon competition into uncertainty. Training was canceled for a second straight day on Monday after water quality testing deemed the water unsafe for athletes. “Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will return to below limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on July 30,” a joint statement from Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said. F.D.A. Approves Blood Test for Colon Cancer Detection

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved a new screening test for colorectal cancer. For many people, a routine blood test is easier to get than a colonoscopy or a fecal sample test. But the blood test, made by Guardant Health of Palo Alto, Calif., comes with a limitation. It is approved for people aged 45 and over who are at average risk for colon cancer. As many as 53,000 Americans are expected to die from colorectal cancer this year.

Former President Donald J. Trump has agreed to be interviewed by the F.B.I. as part of its investigation into the motives of the 20-year-old man who tried to assassinate him during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, bureau officials said on Monday. “We want to get his perspective on what he observed, like any other witness,” Kevin Rojek, the head of the bureau’s Pittsburgh field office, said on a call with reporters. By week’s end, the F.B.I. offered its most definitive explanation yet, saying it was a bullet or a fragment of one, a statement it reiterated on Monday.

Submarines could be very useful for defense of Canadian territory, or asserting a presence in contested Arctic waters. But tripling Canada's submarine fleet will require more than buying new boats. AdvertisementThough Canada acquired its first submarine in 1914, its recent experience with undersea boats has not been a happy one. In 1998, the Royal Canadian Navy bought four used British Upholder-class diesel-electric subs that became surplus as Britain switched to an all-nuclear submarine fleet. Several foreign shipbuilders have expressed interest in selling subs to Canada, including South Korea's Hanwha Ocean and Sweden's Saab.

The surveillance drone appeared high above the Ukrainian air base without warning in early July. Minutes after it relayed targeting data back to a Russian base, a barrage of ballistic missiles struck the airfield, Ukrainian officials said, recounting the episode. “Now they’re hitting the air base with the rockets all the time,” Ms. Minenko said. Russia has been saturating the skies over Ukraine with surveillance drones, exploiting gaps in air-defense systems, to launch increasingly sophisticated attacks on Ukrainian positions. Ukraine’s strategy was to counter Russia in the air war with the aid of long-coveted F-16 fighter jets from the West that it says it will deploy this summer.

Kamala Harris has an easy laugh. To the campaign running against her, this appears to be a vulnerability to exploit. Donald J. Trump jumped on it when unveiling a nickname for her on Saturday: “Laffin’ Kamala Harris,” adding that “You can tell a lot by a laugh.” Compilations of her guffawing circulated online this week. Only in an era when everything gets politicized would a campaign come out aggressively against boisterous laughter. Laughter transcends party politics, and it’s helped the messaging of everyone from Ronald Reagan to John F. Kennedy.

"For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said at this year's Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Kennedy went further than Trump, promising to establish a 4 million bitcoin strategic reserve to match the country's current stake in gold, some of which is held near the military base at Fort Knox. But Trump's reservation speaks to the complications of promising a bitcoin strategic reserve on par with the gold standard. An executive order would not be enough to bring a U.S. bitcoin reserve into existence. That existing bitcoin stockpile could act as the foundation for the bitcoin strategic reserve, which the U.S. government would build on by regularly buying a certain number of bitcoin.

Former President Donald J. Trump vowed on Saturday that he would turn the United States into a “Bitcoin superpower" if returned to the White House, wielding much of the same rhetoric of persecution that he has applied to himself and his supporters to appeal to cryptocurrency enthusiasts who want to see less regulation. “Sadly, we see the attacks on crypto,” Mr. Trump told a gathering of cryptocurrency fans in Nashville. “It’s a part of a much larger pattern that’s being carried out by the same left-wing fascists to weaponize government against any threat to their power. They’ve done it to me.”He added that, if he were elected, “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s anti-crypto crusade will be over” and that “the moment I’m sworn in, the persecution stops and the weaponization ends against your industry.”Mr. Trump has been competing with Robert F. Suddenly, Donald Trump looks enlightened about women. Sure, he’s in a 1959 time warp, like some spray-tanned, comb-over swinger in a Vegas lounge, talking about skirts and broads. Sure, he filled the Supreme Court with religious zealots ending women’s rights. He cheated on his first wife with the woman who became his second wife and then had flings when he was married to his third wife. And yet, somehow, Trump managed to choose a vice-presidential pick whose views on women are even more draconian and meanspirited than his own.

Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.
