PARIS — The second boxer at the center of a global debate over gender eligibility and fairness at the Paris Olympics won her semifinal match Wednesday, ascending to the featherweight gold medal bout. Lin and another female Olympic boxer, Imane Khelif of Algeria, continue to face intense scrutiny and false accusations about their gender and eligibility to compete with women. The Bulgarian Olympic Committee later confirmed that Staneva was boasting about having XX chromosomes in an attempt to mock Lin. "The opponent is a respectable one.”Algeria's Imane Khelif reacts after defeating Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng in a women's 66-kilogram semifinal boxing match at the Olympics on Tuesday. Elon Musk is "the one person who is accountable to no one" and his impact on public discourse should not be underestimated, the U.K.'s technology minister said in an interview with the Times newspaper, adding to recent criticisms of the technology billionaire from senior government officials. Peter Kyle, secretary of science, innovation and technology, said in the interview, which was published Wednesday, that Musk has the power to influence major world affairs — even the war between Russia and Ukraine. Kyle added that the relationship Britain has with companies such as X and other major social media firms, "is much more akin to the negotiations with fellow secretaries of state in other countries, simply because of the scale and scope that they have." His comments, which were made before the recent riots in the U.K., follow Sunday's controversial remarks from Musk about British affairs. On Monday, the British prime minister's official spokesperson said there was "no justification" for comments like those made by X's owner and chairman.

A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. That uncertainty about the future of US EV incentives prompted automakers to reconsider their earlier EV plans.

New York CNN —Elon Musk’s X has accused a group of major advertisers of antitrust violations in a new lawsuit claiming the group conspired to “boycott” advertising on the platform. The lawsuit claims an influential ad industry group organized “to collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising from Twitter” because the group was concerned that the platform had deviated from brand safety standards after Musk’s acquisition in late 2022. The lawsuit is the latest effort by X to revive its core ad business, which has tanked since Musk’s takeover. It’s not the first time X has filed a lawsuit related to its declining ad business. The suit accuses Media Matters of distorting how likely it is for ads to appear beside extremist content on X.

London CNN —Social media has played a big role in fueling the anti-immigration riots engulfing towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Musk later apologized for what he called his “dumbest” ever social media post. The UK government this week vowed to prosecute “online criminality” and has pushed social media companies to take action against the spread of false information. “Social media has put rocket boosters under… not just the misinformation but the encouragement of violence,” UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday. It is unclear that the UK government has the tools to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in the riots.

Elon Musk's social media platform X has sued a group of advertisers, alleging that a "massive advertiser boycott" deprived the company of billions of dollars in revenue and violated antitrust laws. The company formerly known as Twitter filed the lawsuit Tuesday in a federal court in Texas against the World Federation of Advertisers and member companies Unilever, Mars, CVS Health and Orsted. Musk posted about the lawsuit on X on Tuesday, saying "now it is war" after two years of being nice and "getting nothing but empty words." X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a video announcement that the lawsuit stemmed in part from evidence uncovered by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee which she said showed a "group of companies organized a systematic illegal boycott" against X. The Republican-led committee had a hearing last month looking at whether current laws are "sufficient to deter anticompetitive collusion in online advertising."

X filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, a coalition of major advertisers, claiming that it had violated antitrust laws by coordinating with brands to dissuade them from spending money on the social media platform. “The illegal behavior of these organizations and their executives cost X billions of dollars,” wrote Linda Yaccarino, X’s chief executive, in an open letter to advertisers. “People are hurt when the marketplace of ideas is undermined and some viewpoints are not funded over others as part of an illegal boycott.”With the lawsuit, X effectively declared war on advertisers, which provide the bulk of the social media company’s revenue. Since Mr. Musk acquired the company and promised to usher in a new era of unfettered free speech, many advertisers have limited their spending on X, concerned by reports of rising hate speech and misinformation there. By pursuing legal action against GARM, Mr. Musk continued to break with the leaders of other social media companies, who have forged close relationships with advertisers and been responsive to their concerns about offensive online content.
