Astronomers classify night skies from dark to bright using the Bortle Scale, ranked from one to nine. Light pollution is when artificial light washes out the night sky and makes it hard to see stars. While it might not be as potentially harmful as other kinds of pollution, light pollution can affect human health. Level four classifies the transition from suburban to rural areas, where you can see the Milky Way. The night sky is brimming with stars, making it harder to parse out faint constellations.
It was fun and games at first. But when pickleballers took over the tennis court at River Canyon Estates in Bend, Ore., for hours on end, bringing boom boxes, hurling profanities and letting dogs run loose—not to mention the constant pok-pok-pok of balls hitting paddles—the neighbors said enough is enough. Fearing a lawsuit, the board of the homeowners association enlisted a professional mediator. It commissioned a sound study and considered ways to reduce pickleball noise—to no avail. In February, the board banned pickleball from the community’s tennis court.
A 20-year-old TikTok creator was reportedly hit with a $285 fine after hitting a golf ball into the Grand Canyon. The video showed her hitting a golf ball into the canyon and throwing her golf club off the ledge, according to the official Instagram account for the Grand Canyon. "Do we really need to say, ‘don’t hit golf balls into the Grand Canyon?’" the Grand Canyon wrote in a Facebook post on Oct. 27 and on Instagram on Oct. 28. Golfing in the Grand Canyon???" The Grand Canyon National Park has publicly called out misbehaving visitors in the past.

Many of the world's most successful CEOs and business leaders swear by their reading habit. CNBC Make It asked 7 CEOs to share their favorite reads for the holiday season. It is so timely and necessary given the pace of work and the amount of distractions. Unlike reading a typical book, which can feel passive, 'Embrace The Work, Love Your Career' is an experiential journal. This book is a quick read that really helped me connect to the ways we tend to tell ourselves stories to self-justify our thoughts and actions.
A portion of the Grand Canyon with a name deemed "offensive" to Native Americans has been renamed in a move that one official called "long overdue," the National Park Service announced in a statement Monday. The park service instituted policies that forced the Havasupai people from the area — originally called Ha’a Gyoh — nearly a century ago, according to the statement. Havasupai Gardens is a frequent stopping point for hikers located off Bright Angel Trail, the park’s most popular hiking trail, according to the park service. The park service is also working with the Havasupai Tribe to plan a rededication ceremony for the area next spring. The Havasupai Tribe — whose name means "People of the Blue Green Waters" — have lived around the Grand Canyon for over 1,000 years, according to the tribe's website and the park service.
Diablo is the last operating nuclear plant in California. The Biden administration believes nuclear power is critical in curbing climate change and wants to keep plants open ahead of the development of next-generation reactors. Poppe said the plant is also ordering more uranium fuel for the reactor, and dry casks for storing nuclear waste. Some politicians who have been wary of problems associated with nuclear waste have come out in support of the Civil Nuclear Credit program. Holtec International, which in May bought the Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan, said on Friday that DOE rejected its application for funding.
As I drive through a gate high above Los Angeles’s Nichols Canyon, a tall man with unmistakably bushy eyebrows waves me into a precarious parking spot and says, “That’s $20. Leave the keys in the car.” My valet is Will Ferrell, clad in basketball shorts, slides and a T-shirt bearing the crest of the Los Angeles Football Club, of which he is a minority owner. Ferrell waves to his wife, Viveca Paulin-Ferrell, an art auctioneer and board member at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as she sits idling in a blue Tesla , waiting to pull out. “It’s gonna be a tennis court,” Ferrell explains. “I don’t play, but you need one if you want to sip a gin and tonic.”

The Biden administration on Monday said it's providing Pacific Gas & Electric Co. with a $1.1 billion grant to help the company prevent the closure of Diablo Canyon, California's last nuclear power plant. Diablo Canyon was originally scheduled to be decommissioned in two phases in 2024 and 2025, but state lawmakers in September voted to keep it open for five more years. PG&E applied for funding in the Department of Energy's initial phase of the $6 billion Civil Nuclear Credit program aimed to keep U.S. nuclear power reactors open. Diablo Canyon is California's single largest source of power, providing 8.6% of the state's total electricity and 17% of its zero-carbon electricity. Final terms of the grant are subject to negotiation and finalization, the Energy Department said, but the funding is designed to cover PG&E's anticipated losses from keeping Diablo Canyon open.

Kari Lake’s Loss Destroys ‘Stop the Steal’

If anyone needs more evidence that “Stop the Steal” was a loser for the GOP this year, the party’s Arizona wipeout is definitive. On Monday Kari Lake joined the list of Republicans in the Grand Canyon State who ran on the stolen 2020 election and lost. Ms. Lake, a former TV news anchor, had all the sparkling charisma that Donald Trump’s other favorite candidates lacked. She called 2020 “a corrupt, stolen election,” and she repeated that line to the bitter end. As Mr. Trump bragged in a phone call captured on tape: “If they say, ‘How is your family?’ she says, ‘The election was rigged and stolen.’”
Voters in Arizona have approved a ballot initiative to extend in-state college tuition to qualifying students regardless of immigration status, the Associated Press has reported. Proposition 308 will allow students, including those who are undocumented, to pay in-state college rates if they've attended Arizona high schools for at least two years. Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema to Republicans like Arizona state House Speaker Rusty Bowers and former Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Karrin Taylor Robson. The outcome signals a stark contrast and shift from Arizona's 2006 Proposition 300, which prohibited undocumented people from receiving in-state tuition and state financial assistance. More than 71% of Arizona voters at the time voted in favor of the proposition.
WASHINGTON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Two companies that have applied for funding to keep struggling nuclear power plants open said they expect to hear from the U.S. Department of Energy by the end of the year. Both power utility PG&E Corp (PCG.N) and Holtec International applied to the first phase of the $6 billion DOE Civil Nuclear Credit program to keep their reactors running. The Biden administration believes nuclear power is essential to fight climate change, but plants are struggling with costs and competition from natural gas plants and renewables. Poppe said PG&E is applying to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license allowing Diablo to continue operating. She said Diablo is also ordering more uranium fuel for the reactor, and dry casks for storing nuclear waste.

The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.
Oct 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. government warned on Friday that it may impose water supply cuts on California, Arizona and Nevada to protect the Colorado River and its two main reservoirs from overuse, drought and climate change. Besides protecting drinking water supplies, the proposed federal action might also preserve hydroelectric production at the country's two largest reservoirs. The bureau, part of the Department of Interior, had previously set a mid-August deadline for seven western states to negotiate their own reductions or possibly face mandatory cutbacks. The seven states operate under a 100-year-old compact distributing Colorado River water, but that agreement has come under increasing strain from the worst drought in 1,200 years, which has been exacerbated by climate change. A century ago, the compact assumed the river could provide 20 million acre-feet of water each year.
The device, called an imaging spectrometer, has identified more than 50 methane "super-emitters" in Central Asia, the Middle East and the Southwestern United States since it was installed in July aboard the International Space Station, NASA said on Tuesday. The newly measured methane hotspots - some previously known and others just discovered - include sprawling oil and gas facilities and large landfills. "Some of the (methane) plumes EMIT detected are among the largest ever seen - unlike anything that has ever been observed from space," said Andrew Thorpe, a JPL research technologist leading the methane studies. Examples of newly imaged methane super-emitters showcased by JPL on Tuesday included a cluster of 12 plumes from oil and gas infrastructure in Turkmenistan, some plumes stretching more than 20 miles (32 km). EMIT, one of 25 Earth science instruments in orbit, could potentially find hundreds of methane super-emitters before its year-long mission ends, NASA said.
Five people who were stranded about 21 stories underground at Grand Canyon Caverns following an elevator malfunction have been rescued, Arizona officials announced. The elevator malfunction was discovered at about sundown Sunday, and the group was unable to use a stairway system described to be similar to an old, external fire escape, Paxton said. Visitors come down a trail during a guided tour at the Grand Canyon Caverns in Arizona in 2016. “I’m sure, they made sure they were as comfortable as possible," Paxton said Tuesday. The natural limestone caverns, said to be the largest dry caverns in the U.S., occupy a desert region southwest of Grand Canyon National Park about 110 miles from the California border.
Five people have been stranded about 21 stories underground at Grand Canyon Caverns since the attraction's elevator malfunctioned Sunday evening, authorities said Monday night. The issue, which is being handled by elevator repair personnel, may be mechanical, he said. It wasn't clear how long it would take to repair the elevator, the spokesperson said. The sheriff's office has one, and it was sent to the scene Monday. The natural limestone caverns, said to be the largest dry caverns in the U.S., occupy a desert region southwest of Grand Canyon National Park about 110 miles from the California border.
Remote workers aren't just driving up housing prices but also adding more of a burden to already water-strapped regions. Running out of waterAmerica's water crisis, which has been bubbling for years, has become dire. The lack of fresh snow means that less water makes its way into the river and its massive reservoirs — Lake Mead and Lake Powell — upon which the region depends for water. They found that statewide COVID-19 stay-at-home orders triggered "significant increases" in residential water consumption — a trend the researchers attributed, in large part, to remote workers. While population growth does increase water usage, it's (pardon the pun) a drop in the bucket of the bigger-picture crisis.

Courtesy of Anya HindmarchHindmarch's short-lived project is just the latest sign of the opportunities available in the upscale pet market, especially for dog owners. In summer 2021, Versace expanded its homeware collection to cater to pets, no doubt inspired by Donatella's own Jack Russell, Audrey. Heather GildroyPagerie, a luxury pet brand that just launched a collection aimed as much at humans as at dogs, hopes this will be the case.

That helps explain why many were so excited when Joni Mitchell gave a surprising performance in July at the Newport Folk Festival. Now, according to fellow singer Brandi Carlile, the legendary artist will once again take to the stage. “After Newport, Joni said ‘I want to do another show.’ She said ‘I want to play again,’” Carlile told “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah. “No one’s been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play in 20 years,” she continued. She and Carlile are close friends, with Mitchell introducing her at the annual Grammy Awards earlier this year.
