Tropical Storm Francine is expected to strengthen to a hurricane by midweek when it reaches the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm started as a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened into a tropical storm Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year, forecasting 17 to 25 total named storms — which is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher — with eight to 13 forecast to become hurricanes. The above-normal activity was forecast because of near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds and less wind shear.

Authorities in Australia say they have issued an arrest warrant for a man who they say poured hot liquid on a 9-month-old infant last month, sparking a national and international manhunt. Police have released images of a man who may be able to assist in the investigation into the serious assault of an infant at a park in Australia on Aug. 27. On the day of the alleged crime, a group of people were approached by a man, unknown to them, who poured hot liquid on the baby boy before he ran away, authorities said. The infant was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police have said. The man was last seen wearing a black hat, glasses, shirt and shorts.

"I haven’t ever said this but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children," Gomez said. Gomez told Vanity Fair that while it's not the way she envisioned having children, she is in a "much better place" about the situation. But a new study has found that a particular group of chemicals called metabolites, which are tested for as part of routine newborn screenings, could identify babies with an elevated risk. The researchers compared the results of newborn screening tests for 354 infants who died of SIDS with 1,416 infants who did not. “Maybe we’re looking at some food sensitivities,” she said, but added that much more research is needed into the link between SIDS risk and metabolism. Dr. Joanna Parga-Belinkie, a neonatologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia who also wasn’t involved, similarly questioned whether newborn screenings can provide enough answers. “But every baby that’s born isn’t going to get a deep-dive genetic evaluation — they do get newborn screenings,” she added.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Italian phenom Jannik Sinner cast aside doping allegations and won his second Grand Slam title of the year, beating American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the U.S. Open final Sunday in New York City. He won this year's Australian Open and reached the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon before he hoisted another trophy in Queens. Sinner's triumph denied Fritz, a San Diego-area native, his first major title and kept alive a two-decade-long streak of American men’s failing to win the biggest tennis tournament on U.S. soil. Fritz, 26, came close to Grand Slam titles with quarterfinal appearances at Wimbledon and the French Open this year and another round-of-eight visit to Wimbledon in 2022. Criminal statutes on the severity of punishment for instances of check fraud vary by state. In California, misdemeanor check fraud charges can carry a one-year prison term plus financial penalties. In New York, misdemeanor check fraud can entail up to three months in jail and a fine.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the share of Americans who were absent from work because of child care difficulties matched the all-time record for August. At the same time, employment in child care services has not been nearly enough to match the demand, according to Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, who highlighted the statistic in a note following Friday’s job report. The issue largely stems from the havoc created by the pandemic, which prompted many child care facilities to shut down, Pollak said. Consumer payments for child care are up at least 32% since 2019, a recent Bank of America study found. Child care advocates say that almost 10% of the state’s day care sites or home-based programs have shuttered since the pandemic.

However, given that September has historically been the worst month of the year for the market, we're layering in some technical analysis to identify some buy levels. We published our prior buy levels analysis on June 26. Clearly, we should have been a bit more conservative in our buy levels, however, in our defense shares only traded below $162 for two days. However, we must be mindful that a move there would once again mean we've broken below the 200-day moving average. Below that and we're looking for the 200-day moving average to hold at around $89 apiece.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US shrank more than expected in July, an indication that demand for workers continues to wane amid a cooling labor market. Wednesday’s data is the first in a series of critically important economic metrics released this week about the US labor market, culminating with the Friday jobs report. As the labor market has slowed, it’s come back into balance: There are now nearly 1.1 jobs available for every person looking for one. The monthly jobs report for July showed gains of just 114,000 — far below expectations — and the unemployment rate shot to 4.3% from 4.1%. Separately, annual labor market data revisions showed job gains for the year ending March 2024 were less robust than initially thought.

Thanks to some anthropomorphic emotions and a bad-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking antihero, the domestic summer box office scraped together $3.6 billion in ticket sales. Box office analysts and cinema owners braced themselves a few months ago for the possibility that the summer movie season could be the worst showing in a decade. But it wasn't until mid-June that the box office got a proper surge of moviegoers. Through Labor Day, the film was the highest-grossing summer movie with $650 million in box office receipts. Box office analysts foresee the summer's momentum carrying over into the fall, ultimately bolstering the overall third-quarter box office results.
