Canada already imposes 6.1% tariff on EVs manufactured in China and imported into Canada, the government said on Monday. The country will also put a 25% tariff on China-made steel and aluminum imports, effective Oct. 15. China is the third-largest country for steel imports into Canada, according to the Canadian Steel Producers Association. Canada's EV, steel and aluminum industries face "unfair competition" and trade practices from China, the government's finance department said. The EU also hit China-made EVs with higher tariffs in July, though it slashed some of the planned tariffs on China-made Tesla EVs as well as other Chinese EV makers last week.

With a plum position atop many "Best Places to Travel" lists, Japan is on track to welcome a record-breaking number of travelers in 2024. Summer trips are up too, with inbound bookings doubling since last summer, a representative from the travel website Trip.com told CNBC Travel. In 2019, China welcomed some 49.1 million travelers — as of July this year, around 17.25 million foreigners had arrived, according to Chinese state media. "The USD/JPY exchange rate [moved] from approximately 140 in January 2024 to over 160 by July 2024, making Japan more affordable," said Chakraborty. But a Pew Research Center report shows that, among 35 surveyed countries, more than half have unfavorable views of China.

Each of the past several elections, going back to 2005, have resulted in the winning party either being denied its right to form a government, overthrown in a military coup or otherwise removed from office. So when Thailand’s Constitutional Court last week ordered the dissolution of the country’s most popular political party — the pro-reform Move Forward Party, which won last year’s national election on a platform of curbing royal prerogatives — it seemed like déjà vu, the latest chapter in a normalized process of political stagnation. The court decision is not a sign of the strength of the conservative establishment, but of its weakness; a last-gasp attempt by the old guard to cling to an outdated status quo despite demands for change by millions of politically literate young Thais.
