Houseboats on Lake Oroville during a drought in Oroville, California, U.S., on Monday, Oct. 11, 2021. Lake Oroville, California's second-largest reservoir, has experienced a dramatic rise in water levels after a series of atmospheric river storms in January triggered widespread flooding while boosting the Sierra Nevada snowpack and the state's drought-stricken reservoirs. Previous record-low water levels at Oroville were triggered by drought conditions exacerbated by climate change. While California consistently experiences drought, climate change has fueled especially high temperatures and dry soil that have significantly reduced water runoff into the reservoirs. Photos taken in 2021 and 2023 show how much more full Oroville is following the January storms:
LIMA, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Peru's top copper mines are starting to see activity hit harder by protests and blockades in the country's southern Andes, power data reviewed by Reuters shows, with Chinese-owned Las Bambas and Glencore PLC's Antapaccay currently worst affected. Those are MMG's (1208.HK) Las Bambas, Peru's third largest copper mine, and Glencore's (GLEN.L) Antapaccay, which have both been hit by blockades on a key mining corridor highway. The data backs this up, suggesting that mines are at times getting some supplies through the blockades, with Las Bambas in recent days see-sawing between full and half power use. Reuters GraphicsRepresentatives from Las Bambas, Antapaccay and Constancia were not immediately available to comment on whether they were receiving inputs for their operations or sending their concentrates in the two-day window with the blockades eased. "Anecdotal reports and high frequency data suggest that ongoing civil unrest in Peru is beginning to choke off activity at key copper mines.

The wheat harvest was already slashed in half by drought. Like many farmers, Giailevra - who has experienced bad droughts before - has seen his livelihood hammered over the last year. Many farmers in the area say they have lost early-sown corn, wheat and soy, so to rake back income they have planted fields with more drought-resistant cotton. The government has rolled out some tax relief measures for farmers, though with depleted state coffers has limited firepower.

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Argentines are increasingly feeling the impact of one of the world's highest inflation rates, with annual price rises nearing 100%, straining people's budgets as the cost of food, gas and services far outstrips salaries. The South American country, which has grappled with high inflation for years, is set to announce January data on Tuesday, with monthly inflation expected to accelerate to around 6% and the 12-month figure nearing three digits. "The truth is that I live day to day, I look for low prices, I go to markets. Argentines are fed up with inflation and many blame poor economic management and money printing by the government. Brian Muliane, a 33-year-old chiropractor, said that between inflation and taxes his business struggled to survive.
Notable electric vehicle analyst Adam Jonas believes investors may have missed their chance to buy Tesla on the cheap after the stock doubled off its 52-week low, with most of the comeback coming this year. "While we reiterate the overweight rating on Tesla shares, we believe the window of opportunity on 'valuation' has closed," the Morgan Stanley analyst wrote in a note Thursday. TSLA YTD mountain Tesla so far in 2023 Jonas noted that the shares now trade for 38 times enterprise value/EBITDA. "Adding over $350bn of market cap this year closed the 'valuation case' window on Tesla even faster than it opened," Jonas wrote. Jonas is not alone on Wall Street in being cautious on Tesla after the big runup in the stock.

Shares in electric-vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors have jumped 69% in 2023. Speculation of a takeover by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund has fueled Lucid's recent rally. Lucid is even beating rival EV manufacturer Tesla, which is up just under 60% so far this year at $196.81, despite analysts' fears. Lucid shares have also risen thanks to rumors of a looming takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which invests on behalf of the government and already owns over 60% of the carmaker. The stock jumped 43% on January 27 alone, after the deals website Betaville reported the Saudi PIF could be close to finalizing a full takeover.

The event may have created a compelling entry point for investors who have been on the sidelines of the long-term shift to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are becoming much more popular in the U.S. but still make up a small portion of automobiles on the roads. Cutting prices certainly caught the eye of consumers and boosted interest in Tesla vehicles, according to data from Edmunds. And, there are still issues with electric vehicles that make them impractical for large groups of consumers, said Mike Ward, an analyst at The Benchmark Company. There’s also a huge potential in firms that make batteries, key parts of electric vehicles that are also seeing surging share prices.

LIMA, Feb 4 (Reuters) - As deadly protests rage across Peru, a political battle is unfolding inside the halls of Congress, walled off from the streets by hundreds of police, armored vehicles and a maze of gates. Despite the violence, and despite polls that show the majority of Peruvians want the election brought forward, Congress appears to be in deadlock. Reuters spent the last week inside the 130-seat Congress in capital Lima, talking to lawmakers to ask why Peruvian politics seems to be in such a mess. "There is little agreement within political parties as to what to do," said Peruvian political analyst Andrea Moncada. "If we have elections in a year or by some miracle by the end of this year, the parties registered to participate are the same ones that are in Congress right now."

Lucid 's stock has boomed in recent days, but Morgan Stanley is warning of a bust on the horizon. Analyst Adam Jonas' price target of $5 implies the electric vehicle maker's stock will tumble 57.4% from where it closed Monday. That means Jonas, who carries an underweight investment recommendation, expects the stock to hit an all-time low sometime in the next 12 months. While Jonas said support from the Saudi Arabia could help the company long-term, he still sees a challenging road ahead for Lucid. The stock previously reached an intraday low of $6.09 and closing low of $6.17 earlier this month.

GM, Ford must convince investors they can profit as prices fall

Already there are signs the Detroit automakers are scaling back spending to offset competitive and economic pressure. GM and Ford both rely on sales of pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States for the bulk of their global profits. The risk to the Detroit automakers' profitability would be a challenge in the best of times. But now, GM and Ford must factor in forecasts for a slowdown, or even a recession, in the U.S. economy. The Model Y SUV competes with Ford's Mustang Mach-E, GM's Cadillac Lyriq EV, and with combustion SUVs the Detroit automakers sell.
Tesla shares are up over 10% in premarket trading on Thursday, after beating on the top and bottom lines, despite mixed analyst sentiment about the electric-vehicle manufacturer's outlook. Tesla cut prices at the end of 2022 and into 2023, a move that seems to have sparked demand. We're currently seeing orders of almost twice the rate of production," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on an investor call Wednesday. Tesla reported automotive revenue of $21.3 billion in the fourth quarter and adjusted earnings per share of $1.19. "Better than feared," wrote Canaccord Genuity analyst George Gianarikas in a Wednesday night note.
He must accelerate the Japanese automaker's efforts to develop more competitive electric vehicles. But he will get little breathing room from Tesla or the Chinese EV manufacturers who are using their leads in EV technology and production costs to slash prices. THE SHIFTING GROUNDGlobal automakers are experienced with periods of feast and famine that come on roughly seven-to-ten year cycles. South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) on Thursday reported better-than-expected results powered in part by strong sales of its new EV lineup. Hyundai forecast its EV sales would grow by 54% this year - a faster growth pace than Tesla has forecast.
How Tesla's price cuts could spur an EV pricing war
  + stars: | 2023-01-25 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
DETROIT — Tesla vehicles in the U.S. are seeing significant price cuts, and that's proving to be a double-edged sword for the electric carmaker and the greater automotive industry. CEO Elon Musk hasn't directly addressed the price cuts, which are counterintuitive to his claims that the company's cars will be appreciating assets — a rarity for the market aside from classics and collectible vehicles. Analysts say the price cuts suggest Tesla is prioritizing sales over profits, potentially signaling a demand problem. For the industry at large, Tesla's price cuts put pressure on other automakers to offer more affordable EVs despite rising commodity costs, creates havoc for used vehicle retailers that will need to write down the vehicles and has Wall Street concerned about the first EV pricing war amid recessionary fears. "Tesla's price cuts make all other EVs and [internal combustion engine vehicles] look incrementally more expensive, is margin compressive and sends a chill across the used car market," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a Friday investor note.
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas named Tesla his top pick for the electric vehicle space on Wednesday, just hours before the EV maker is set to report earnings. "Considering many EV makers globally are struggling to sell EVs at positive profit margins, Tesla has room to undercut the competition and still maintain profitability." Tesla's stock has been weighed down since the third quarter earnings release in October, when the company reported weaker revenue than analysts had estimated, alongside adjusted earnings that topped expectations. Price cuts Jonas will also closely monitor Tesla's average transaction price [ATP] projections following the price cuts, and notes that investors will also listen closely for any forward guidance. "In our view, the price cuts are indeed in response to slowing incremental demand relative to incremental supply."
