"It's a very momentum-driven market," said Ben Klein, the cofounder at the record label and music-marketing firm Hundred Days. Still, for some artists, albums can be a useful tool for marketing, streaming economics, and nourishing their biggest fans. "If you're capturing all of your fans and the fans are streaming 10 songs or they're streaming 30 songs, it actually makes a big difference on charting and streaming revenue." AdvertisementOf course, writing lots of quality songs for an album is easier said than done. And some artists are wary of letting social-media strategies or streaming incentives bleed into the creative process.

More than a few still carry the scars, including one 80-year-old woman I recently spoke to about her middle school experience. Instead of facing a mean girl or boy of his own, he wound up with a social media influencer in his class who held sway over the entire grade. “All of these issues with social media are coming to a head right now and there’s wildly insufficient research,” Marc Berkman, CEO of the non-profit Organization for Social Media Safety, told me recently. Middle school is complicated enough without all the extra pressures generated by having a social media influencer sitting next to you. From middle school science class, we know that a fire needs oxygen to burn.

Why MAGA Nation Embraces Donald Trump - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Deep Source of Trump’s Appeal,” by David Brooks (column, July 12):I’ve always believed that the mass of Donald Trump supporters were fundamentally just working-class Americans who, as the country’s wealth increasingly skewed to the 1 percent ever since President Ronald Reagan, found themselves running faster and faster to stay in the same place, and finally (and justifiably) started to fume about it. While Mr. Brooks doesn’t flat out say it, I take away from his article that, rather than viewing their plight as old-fashioned liberals used to — as plain and simple economic class exploitation — the white working class has been conned by demagogues like Mr. Trump into seeing it as existential, zero-sum identity politics. If Mr. Brooks’s suggestion is that religious leaders guide Americans back to some form of enlightened democratic civility, they’re going to have to drop a bit more wealth redistribution into their message to the congregation. Steven DoloffNew YorkTo the Editor:It was only a matter of time before the voters who have become MAGA nation — having been dismissed as “deplorables,” sniffed at as people who “cling to guns or religion,” and generally considered less worthy — would decide to stand up for themselves and say, “We matter, too, and as much as you do.”

To understand anchovies, you need to understand umami. For most of history, just four tastes were recognized: sweet, sour, bitter and salty. He named the taste umami, after the Japanese word “umai,” which translates — very roughly — as savory taste. Preserved anchovies — whether salted, packed in oil or transformed into fish sauce — have extraordinarily high levels of umami. We know we need to be eating more whole foods, more plants, more good fats, more grains and pulses.

In recent decades, mental health providers began screening for “adverse childhood experiences” — generally defined as abuse, neglect, violence, family dissolution and poverty — as risk factors for later disorders. In fact, the risk of moving frequently in childhood was significantly greater than the risk of living in a poor neighborhood, said Clive Sabel, a professor at the University of Plymouth and the paper’s lead author. “Even if you came from the most income-deprived communities, not moving — being a ‘stayer’ — was protective for your health,” said Dr. Sabel, a geographer who studies the effect of environment on disease. The study, a collaboration by Aarhus University, the University of Manchester and the University of Plymouth, included all Danes born between 1982 and 2003, more than a million people. Of those, 35,098, or around 2.3 percent, received diagnoses of depression from a psychiatric hospital.

London CNN —The International Monetary Fund has warned that stubborn inflation could keep interest rates higher for longer than expected, increasing fiscal and financial risks around the world. Persistently high prices for services — which include haircuts, hotels and restaurants — as well as escalating trade tensions are propping up inflation and raising the prospect that interest rates will stay high for a while yet, the IMF cautioned Tuesday in its latest World Economic Outlook. The warning highlights that the global economy is not yet in the clear when it comes to inflation, which explains the caution on the part of central banks in cutting interest rates. However, services inflation came in higher than expected. The agency blamed sticky services price inflation for “holding up progress” on reducing overall inflation.

It's a juicy prize for winning a generative AI coding competition hosted by Inriver's owners, private equity firm Thomas H. Lee. It's one way the Boston-based buyout firm has been able to implement generative AI coding assistants among its portfolio of middle-market companies. The goal is to accelerate software development so that portfolio companies can do more work with the same amount of resources. He also persists that deploying generative AI coding assistants is not a cost exercise, but a means to productivity. Now, the key for the SRG is educating portfolio companies on what problems AI can fix and which it can't.

Elysian unveils fully electric 90-passenger plane

“You shouldn’t assume that an electric plane is going to look like the (most successful) planes of today,” de Vries says, adding that a common misconception is that electric planes should essentially be electrified versions of the lightest regional turboprops. What you end up with is a plane that in weight proportions, for example, looks much more like old 1960s jets. Israeli-founded Eviation has flight-tested its plane, called Alice – a fully electric nine-passenger commuter plane with a range of 250 nautical miles that the company aims to put into service in 2027. “There are over 5,000 aircraft in service today in the E9X’s size category of 70 to 100 seats,” he says. If Elysian can surmount the technology and infrastructure challenges, he adds, it will then face the commercial challenge of entering a fiercely competitive market.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

The two had met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday, before the rally at which Trump was shot in the ear. Trump is betting that Vance articulating his evolution from Trump critic to supporter will prove much more potent than those older comments. “President Trump honored the Constitution. “I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said.

Mostly, they were ill-prepared to be a college student — yet their parents and teachers expected them to "act their age." New York CNN —Google owner Alphabet is in advanced discussions to buy fast-growing cybersecurity startup Wiz for roughly $23 billion, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN. A takeover of Wiz, which makes cybersecurity software for cloud computing, would represent a major bet by Google on cybersecurity, marking the tech giant’s biggest-ever acquisition. Discussions between Google and Wiz began after the startup raised $1 billion from venture capital investors earlier this year, the source said. Google Cloud is central to the company’s efforts to diversity revenue beyond its core search advertising business. Shares in Burberry plunged 11% in early trading on Monday after a disappointing first-quarter performance led it to issue a profit warning, replace its CEO and axe its dividend. The luxury giant said that if the recent trading slowdown continues, it expects to report an operating loss for the first half of this year and full-year operating profit below current consensus. It also suspended its dividend and named Joshua Schulman — who formerly led Michael Kors and Coach — as new CEO. Jonathan Akeroyd is stepping down "with immediate effect by mutual agreement with the Board," the company added. Burberry said comparable store sales fell 21% in the 12 weeks to June 29, with retail revenue coming in at £458 million for the period.

The pandemic signified a “historic backslide,” according to Dr. Katherine O’Brien, director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biological at WHO. WHO and UNICEF’s 2023 immunization coverage report, released Sunday, is the world’s largest dataset on immunization trends for vaccinations against 14 diseases. It analyzed estimates from 185 countries and used a third dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) vaccine — which is recommended for 1-year-olds — as the global marker for immunization coverage. The 2023 report also found HPV vaccine coverage in girls increased 7%, returning to near pre-pandemic levels. Analyzing immunization coverage in other areas of conflict is “a mixed picture,” O’Brien said.
