Navigator CO2 Ventures has canceled its Heartland Greenway pipeline project aimed at capturing 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually from Midwest ethanol plants and storing it permanently underground, the company said on Friday, citing "unpredictable" state regulatory processes. The Navigator project would have laid 1,300 miles (2,092 km) of pipeline across five states. Residents along the route expressed concern to state regulators about potential safety risks if the pipeline should leak and about harm to their land from construction. In September, the company's permit application was denied by South Dakota regulators and this month the company asked Iowa regulators to pause its permit process. Another major CCS pipeline project proposed by Summit Carbon Solutions has also faced setbacks amid landowner concerns, including permit denials in South and North Dakota.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman who falsely claimed to have cancer and documented her “battle” on social media will stay out of prison after a judge gave her probation and a suspended sentence. As part of the 10-year suspended sentence handed down Friday, she was ordered to pay $39,000 in restitution and a $1,370 fine. Russo told the court she made her story up because she hoped her fake cancer battle would force her troubled family to focus on her. Police subpoenaed her medical records and found she had never been diagnosed with cancer at any medical facility in the area. The company withdrew its application for a key permit in Illinois and said it it was putting all its permit applications on hold. The proposed 1,300-mile (2,092-kilometer) project would carry planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions from more than 20 industrial plants across South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. The Illinois permit is crucial because that’s where the company planned to store the carbon dioxide underground. Crop Watch producers reported quick harvest progress in the first week of October, and soybeans were the prime beneficiary as many areas are close to wrapping up those efforts.
