The FBI is investigating the MGM and Caesars breaches, and the companies did not comment on who may be behind them. In some cases - Mandia did not say which ones - hackers tied to Scattered Spider placed bogus emergency calls to summon heavily armed police units to the homes of executives of targeted companies. ALPHV, which according to Mandiant is a "ransomware-as-a-service", would provide services such as a helpdesk, webpage and branding, and in turn get a cut of whatever Scattered Spider would make from the hack. While many ransomware attacks go unpublicised, the MGM hack was a vivid example of the real-world impact of such incidents. Ransomware gangs often function like large organizations, and continue to evolve their methods to adapt to the latest security measures organizations use.

A recent cyberattack by a notorious hacking group targeted MGM, disrupting its Las Vegas locations. The hack sheds light on the way cybersecurity can play out in the real world. Rival casino owner Caesars Entertainment also disclosed last week to federal regulators that it was hit by a cyberattack Sept. 7. But Moody also noted that MGM Resorts reports annual revenues above $14 billion, which would mean it averages at least $270 million in revenues per week. Experts said the attacks exposed critical cybersecurity weaknesses at MGM and Caesars and shattered an image of casino invulnerability.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Normal operations are back at all of the casinos and hotels run by MGM Resorts International in the U.S., the company said Wednesday, 10 days after a cyberattack led the company to shut down reservation and credit card processing in an effort to protect its data. In statements posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the company said resort services, dining, entertainment, pools and spas were operational. It also said its website and phone app were taking dining and spa reservations while the company works to restore hotel booking and loyalty reward functions. Details about the extent of the data breach were not immediately disclosed, including what information may have been compromised and how much the break-in cost the company. Casino company Caesars Entertainment was also hit by a cyberattack, although it said casino and online operations were not disrupted.

"Mobile Check-In and Digital Keys are currently unavailable," MGM said on its website. Several security analysts have drawn attention to Scattered Spider over the past year for its social engineering tactics. Last week, the hacking group said it took six terabytes of data from the systems of multi-billion-dollar casino operators MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment (CZR.O), as both companies probed the breaches.

David Bradbury, chief security officer of the identity management company Okta, said five of the company's clients, including MGM and Caesars, had fallen victim to hacking groups known as ALPHV and Scattered Spider since August. In an interview with Reuters, Bradbury didn't name the other companies, but said Okta was cooperating with official investigations into the breaches. "We've seen consistently over the past six to 12 months, a ramp up in these types of attacks," Bradbury said. Bradbury said the group had breached into MGM and obtained access to its Okta client, which allowed it further access to more credentials in the identity management firm's system. Bradbury said Mandiant's description of the group's tactics aligned with what Okta had observed in the recent hacks.

New York CNN —A cyberattack at Clorox is causing wide-scale disruption of the company’s operations, hampering its ability to make its cleaning materials, Clorox said Monday. Clorox said some of its products are now in short supply as it has struggled to meet consumer demand during the disruption. Clorox said it immediately took action to stop the attack, including reducing its operations. Still, Clorox has not been able to get its manufacturing operations back up to full speed. “Clorox has already resumed production at the vast majority of its manufacturing sites and expects the ramp up to full production to occur over time,” the company said.

Clorox on Monday warned of a material financial hit from ongoing production disruptions caused by a cyberattack last month. It expects to start bringing systems back up to speed next week, and will ramp up to full production "over time." Now, a month later, the attack is still causing "widescale disruption" to the companies operations, according to a Clorox securities filing. The breach at Clorox comes as Las Vegas casino companies MGM and Caesars reckon with their own cyberattacks. MGM also warned of a potential material impact on its finances.

That's odd, she thought, then toggled over to Facebook to search for clues about the issue on a group for MGM Resorts International loyalty members. There, she learned that the largest casino owner in Las Vegas had fallen victim to a cybersecurity breach. The situation entered its sixth day on Friday, with booking capabilities still down and MGM Resorts offering penalty-free room cancelations through Sept. 17. The security attacks that triggered an FBI probe shatter a public perception that casino security requires an “Oceans 11”-level effort to defeat it. It's true, Kim said, that casino giants like MGM Resorts and Caesars are protected by sophisticated — and expensive — security operations.

Okta CEO Todd McKinnon told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday that all companies are under attack from cybercriminals. McKinnon explained he would not comment publicly on the ongoing issue, but said the company is working with MGM. "Okta customer or not," he said, "they're all under massive attack from cybercriminals. The amount that cybercriminals can gain from attacking companies and organizations and governments is super high. So one of the things that we pride ourselves at Okta is working very closely, collaborating with everyone in the ecosystem," he said.

The cybercrime group has made a ransom demand to MGM as well, those sources told CNBC's Contessa Brewer. The 8-K report, similar to one filed by MGM Resorts on Wednesday, acknowledges the hack as a material event. The cybercrime group demanded a $30 million ransom from Caesars, but the company ultimately agreed to pay about half that, sources said. Bloomberg previously reported the ransom and that the same group is behind the attacks on both companies. It wasn't immediately clear why Caesars delayed filing the report disclosing the hack and ransom for weeks.

Since a Supreme Court ruling in 2018 opened the door for more states to greenlight sports gambling, the N.F.L. issued its most extensive set of penalties for violations of its gambling policy. Nine players in the past four years — including one Commanders player — have received at least season-long bans for betting on N.F.L. This diverges from other professional leagues such as Major League Baseball, which prohibits only betting on baseball games or illegal betting. Commanders left tackle Charles Leno Jr. said he doesn’t like talking about the gambling policy because he’s wary of saying something that could get him in trouble.

Sept 14 (Reuters) - Caesars Entertainment (CZR.O) on Thursday confirmed a data breach that led to a leak of information, including details from its loyalty program database. The company said hackers accessed details, including driver's license numbers and possibly social security numbers, for a "significant number of members in the database". Caesars added it is still investigating the extent of the data leak "acquired by the unauthorized actor" and has no evidence to date that any member passwords/PINs, bank account information or payment card information were accessed. Another casino operator MGM International (MGM.N) was also allegedly hacked by a group called Scattered Spider, Bloomberg News had reported. Analysts at Moody's have warned MGM Resorts may see a negative impact to its credit rating after the recent data breach.

CNN —Hackers stole Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers from a “significant number” of loyalty program customers of Caesars Entertainment, the hospitality and casino giant said Thursday. The hackers broke into computer systems via “a social engineering attack” on an IT support contractor, according to the filing. “We have taken steps to ensure that the stolen data is deleted by the unauthorized actor, although we cannot guarantee this result,” Caesars Entertainment said. The company said on Monday, when news of the incident broke, that it had shut down certain computer systems to protect its data. Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Scattered Spider was responsible for the pair of cyberattacks on Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts.
