A few years after they launched in Brooklyn, New York, they were endorsed by Oprah Winfrey and opened a shop at Walt Disney World. Then, in 2020, the company declared bankruptcy. Six months later, Smith and Cuscuna filed for personal bankruptcy. Now they're trying again — with new investors and a bevy of lessons learned from failure.

The husband-and-wife duo started with an ice cream push cart before opening their first Ample Hills shop in Brooklyn, New York, in 2011. At its height, Ample Hills was valued at $40 million, with 13 scoop shops and an online store that shipped ice cream nationwide. But a year later, they opened a new Brooklyn ice cream shop called The Social. Here's how Smith and Cuscuna built a $40 million ice cream company, slowly lost it all and quickly started rebuilding again. 'The real impetus was just that joy'Opening an ice cream shop was risky.

ROME, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Fans from across Europe and the United States travelled to Rome in high spirits for the 44th Ryder Cup, enjoying warm weather and bringing a blaze of colour to the Eternal City as the action got underway on Friday. It is the first time the event has been held in Italy, attracting a host of local fans alongside more regular visitors from afar. "This is my eighth Ryder Cup, we are veterans," said Andy Nichol, who came with his friends from England and had British flags all over his suit, including on his tie and hat. While many American fans felt the food and drinks were fairly priced considering the popularity of the event, visitors from Europe voiced some criticism. However, visitors generally agreed the Marco Simone was a fine course, the event was well organised and the Ryder Cup was different from any other golf tournament.

The U.S. State Department considers Tamaulipas, where the two cities are located, to be the most dangerous state along the U.S.-Mexico border. Tens of thousands of people a day are competing for 1,450 slots, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). U.S. authorities temporarily suspended CBP One appointments in June in another Tamaulipas border city, Nuevo Laredo, due to "extortion and kidnapping concerns," the official said. Juan Rodriguez, head of the Tamaulipas migrant services agency, said the agency was "attentive" to the issue. CNN —Record-breaking NASA astronaut Frank Rubio has finally returned to Earth, feeling the pull of the planet’s gravity for the first time in more than a year. The crew’s arrival marked the end of a long — and unexpected — journey for Rubio, who had been slated to spend only six months aboard the International Space Station. Rubio bested the previous record for the longest stay in space by a US astronaut — 355 days — which was set by NASA’s Mark Vande Hei in 2022. A view shows the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft (on left) that carried Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio back to Earth. Ukrainian soldiers would "have a bad time" if they used American fighting doctrine against Russia. He said that NATO training for Ukraine's troops includes discipline, which is unnecessary given the stakes. Jackie also pushed back against the idea that Ukraine should rigidly follow NATO standard training, and even argued that such a thing doesn't really exist. "I keep hearing 'NATO standard' getting thrown around, and 'NATO standard training' or 'NATO standard doctrine'," he said, adding: "The Polish infantry does not fight the same way as the American infantry." To those training Ukrainians, he said, simply: "Don't get worked up about the procedures and the organizational stuff and ribbons and medals."

A leading think tank called on Ukraine's Western allies to show greater faith in its military decisions. "The Ukrainian forces have done what successful militaries do — they have adapted and are now advancing. The New York Times reported at the time that they involved attacking Russian positions in large groups using complicated maneuvers. But other analysts were more skeptical that Ukraine's counteroffensive could yield a decisive result this year.

Videos from social media showed riverfront communities in North Carolina such as New Bern, Belhaven and Washington experiencing significant flooding. Tens of thousands of North Carolina homes and businesses remained without electricity across several eastern counties as of Saturday afternoon, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks utility reports. A Duke Energy map showed scattered power outages across much of eastern North Carolina, as winds toppled tree limbs and snagged power lines. Brian Haines, a spokesperson for the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management, said there were reports of downed trees but no major road closings. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland each declared a state of emergency on Friday.

Yet, if Gucci’s new designer Sabato de Sarno was rattled before he took his bow for the Italian luxury house at Milan fashion week on Friday, he didn’t show it. Where Michele was an overt maximalist with retro references, de Sarno mined the Gucci archive and codes in a more stripped-back way. Oxblood red dominated the collection, inspired by The Savoy hotel in London where Guccio Gucci worked in the late 1800s. The bling was, in fact, a reference to the Marina jewelry collection that appeared in Gucci campaigns in the late 1960s. The rest of the embellished crystal designs were inspired by embroideries de Sarno found on 1960s clutch bags in the Gucci archive.

Due to be held in Melbourne from February 11 to February 13, 2024, just days before Swift’s “Eras” tour arrives in Australia, the conference is backed by seven universities across Australia and New Zealand. Swift's "Eras" tour has become a cultural phenomenon. Swift’s impact has already proven to be literally Earth-shaking. Fans attending her Seattle “Eras” tour concert at Lumen Field in July caused seismic activity equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake, according to seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach. Her “Eras” tour could gross a record-breaking $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone, according to August survey data from research firm QuestionPro provided to CNN exclusively.

Russian forces in Ukraine can't be outflanked, a US veteran training Ukrainian troops said. He told Insider that Ukraine has no choice but to take the risky move of going "straight up the middle." "You are going to have to go straight up the middle and you're just going to have to pick where the middle is." In fact, he said the only advantage that anyone fighting Russian forces has is that "they don't know the exact second that you're coming." Get it wrong and "all you end up doing is pocketing your own forces for Russia to completely, completely destroy," he said.

They’re all Latinos who’ve been shamed for the way they speak Spanish. About half of US Latinos who don’t speak Spanish have been shamed because of it, the study says, noting that 54% of Latinos who speak no more than a little Spanish say another Latino has made them feel bad for it. “There’s a subtle but ongoing shift in the share of Latinos who speak Spanish at home,” Lopez says. “I don’t know how he knows what I said on Univision, because he doesn’t speak Spanish.” Cruz fired back – in Spanish – and the debate continued. According to Pew’s study released this week, most US Latinos speak Spanish, but the share of Latinos who do differs by generation.

At a speed-dating event in August, $25 bought attendees 20 dates with strangers, each roughly five minutes long. When the first blind dates began, it wasn’t long before some people — mostly men — tried to go out of order so they could talk to the person they were most attracted to. “There’s a seat right here,” one of the event’s organizers said, steering a wayward attendee back into the designated flow. Speed dating is no easy feat, requiring the conversational stamina of a filibuster champion, the brevity of an auctioneer and a positive mood to fight the boredom of repetition. Drinks were encouraged.

It’s no accident that two prime-time hosts on Fox (Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld) cut their teeth doing comedy, of sorts. Part of the reason Gillis is such a phenomenon is clearly political. ‘El Conde’ Review: His Bite Is Worse
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( Amy Nicholson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

CNN —A spacecraft left behind by US astronauts on the lunar surface could be causing small tremors known as moonquakes, according to a new study. The lunar surface is an extreme environment, oscillating between minus 208 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 133 degrees Celsius) in the dark and 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius) in direct sun, according to a news release about the study. Marusiak was not directly involved in the study, though she did have contact with the authors as a fellow expert in lunar seismology. “Every lunar morning when the sun hits the lander, it starts popping off,” said study coauthor Allen Husker, a research professor of geophysics at Caltech, in a statement. It’s important to note a key difference between the moon and Earth: On the lunar surface, there are no shifting tectonic plates that might cause catastrophic events.
