Leitao makes history with Portugal's first gold
  + stars: | 2023-08-06 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
GLASGOW, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Iuri Leitao made history when he claimed Portugal's first ever world title in track cycling by winning the men's omnium event in Glasgow on Sunday. With a comfortable cushion to take into the final points race, Leitao stayed out of trouble and held off the challenge of France's two-time omnium world champion Benjamin Thomas. Portugal has a pedigree in road cycling but, with only one velodrome in the country, track cycling is the poor relation. Now we have a lot of young riders so I think we have given a little bit of motivation for them. "And it's really good to be to be a world champion in giving the hope to the new generation."

Van der Poel answered nature's call in comfort during protest

GLASGOW, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Newly-crowned Dutch world road champion Mathieu Van der Poel said he used a nearly hour-long stoppage to Sunday's showpiece race to answer the call of nature in comfort. The elite men's race was brought to a standstill after 80km when anti fossil fuel protesters from a group named This is Rigged blocked the road. While some riders took on food and drink or had a massage in a team car, Van der Poel's needs were rather more urgent and he managed to find a house for a comfort break rather than having to skip behind the nearest hedge. The protest was going on ahead, they said it was going to take probably half an hour so we bundled into whatever car was nearest and bunkered down until we could get going again." GLASGOW, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Protesters halted the men's road race at the UCI World Championships for almost an hour on Sunday, stopping the peloton in its tracks after 80km. A nine-rider breakaway group, which was seven minutes ahead of the main bunch, was approaching the Crow Road climb on the route from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Police Scotland said their Protest Removal Team had arrested five protesters. The race was allowed to continue on towards Glasgow at 12.16pm with the leading group starting first in order to preserve their time advantage. Several sporting events in Britain this year have been targeted by Just Stop Oil protesters including the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the Ashes cricket test at Lord's.

Ganna beats tech guru Bigham to pursuit gold

For Ineos Grenadiers road powerhouse Ganna, twice the road time trial world champion, it was consolation after Olympic champions Italy lost in the final of the team pursuit to Denmark on Saturday. "Thanks to Dan for an amazing battle in this velodrome," the 27-year-old Ganna said after claiming his seventh track world title, six of them coming in the 4km individual pursuit. Aerodynamics guru Bigham was part of Britain's gold medal-winning team pursuit squad at last year's track worlds and is eyeing next year's Olympics in Paris. He worked with the Denmark team pursuit squad that won the 2020 world title in Berlin in a then world record time. The pair shared a warm embrace after the race with Bigham saying they had a 'mutual respect' for each other's skills.

Nigeria's Oshoala poses biggest threat to England, says Carney

LONDON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - England must beware of Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala when they face the African nation for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Brisbane on Monday, according to Karen Carney. The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder who was capped 144 times by England, believes England have hit form at just the right time but says Nigeria should not be taken lightly. "She is a top quality striker who is more than capable of pulling something out of the bag," Carney said in an interview with Powerleague. "Despite how good England were against China, Nigeria are a top nation that will cause us problems. They have a world class striker and individual players that will be difficult for us.

Twists and turns galore in Glasgow showdown

Crow Road, the one categorised climb, will not shred an elite peloton featuring Grand Tour and Classics winners, but once it rolls into Glasgow, battle will truly commence. A 14.3km circuit of the city centre will be tackled 10 times meaning a combined 400 tight corners. "It will be an accumulation of efforts," Van der Poel, who will share the Dutch leadership with Dylan van Baarle, said on Friday. "It's going to be full gas racing," he said, while Philipsen said: "It will be turning, turning, accelerating all the time." GLASGOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Denmark reclaimed their world title in men's team pursuit as they defeated Olympic champions Italy in the final at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow on Saturday. In a repeat of the gold-medal battle at the Tokyo Games in 2021 which Italy won in a world record time, Denmark exacted revenge as they reeled in the Azzuri to win comfortably. Denmark also won the title in 2020 and were favourites going into the Olympics. Relentless Man City seek record four titles in a row

However, such is the nature of the Premier League that City will certainly not have everything their own way. Juergen Klopp's side's failure to qualify for the Champions League would have stung, especially with Manchester United finishing eight points above them. Newcastle United, who finished fourth last term, will be determined to prove it was no flash in the pan, although they will need to juggle the demands of battling for a top-four finish with the Champions League this time. The additions of winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester City and Sandro Tonali from Milan will certainly help. Postecoglou is the first Australian to manage in the Premier League and faces a big challenge at the north London club who endured a toxic 2022-23 campaign under Antonio Conte.

Those three signings were all completed early in the close4 season meaning Arsenal should be ready to hit the ground running when they kick off at home to Nottingham Forest next Saturday. While Rice's price tag appears over-inflated, he looks capable of giving Arsenal the drive their midfield began to lack in the closing months of the campaign. Timber offers the sort of defensive depth Arsenal sadly lacked after France's William Saliba was injured in March. Against the odds, Dygert back in old routine

But nearly three years after suffering an horrific career-threatening leg injury at the world road championships time trial in Italy, the 26-year-old proved on Thursday she is back. Dygert, the golden girl of American cycling, reduced the individual time trial field to also-rans on the opening day of the UCI World Championships in Glasgow. Dygert, whose marriage to cyclist Logan Owen ended in divorce in 2020, has had three surgeries on her leg. Dygert has further opportunities to grow her medal collection in Glasgow, in the track team pursuit and then in the women's road time race and time trial. Next up for me is the team pursuit where the girls and I are focused on bringing home another medal for the U.S.

Of all the great flesh-and-blood cartoons of 1980s popular culture — Hulk Hogan, Madonna, Mr. T — the one easiest for small children to relate to was Pee-wee Herman. In reality, Pee-wee Herman was nothing like us at all, a dreamy man-child in a red bow tie whose sugary smile could curl into a punky scowl. A singular piece of comic performance art for a mass audience, Pee-wee Herman stood out in every form he appeared in, whether improv theaters, late-night talk shows, the movies or Saturday morning television. The world of Pee-wee is full of this loopy surrealism that could veer into innuendo but never got dark. It was always welcoming, wildly diverse, profoundly silly.

In the first seven months of 2023, Volvo sold 395,856 cars globally, a rise of 18% compared with the same period of 2022, led by soaring demand for fully-electric or plug-in-hybrid models. The manufacturer, which is majority-owned by China's Geely (0175.HK), said it sold 64,764 fully-electric cars year-to-date, up from 23,803 in the year-ago period. The comedian Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Though Pinky Lee is an unfamiliar name today, it would not have been to a man of Mr. Reubens’s generation. Pee-wee Herman was born Paul Rubenfeld in 1952 in Peekskill, NY; Mr. Lee was born Pincus Leff in 1907 in Saint Paul, Minn. Rubenfeld, who was a talented child actor, would rename himself Reubens and become an improv comic. His early work with the The Groundlings in Los Angeles, notably in a Pinky parody skit, would eventually form the basis for one of the more indelible characters in show business. Aug 1 (Reuters) - The first edition of the combined UCI Cycling World Championships begins in Glasgow on Thursday with 11 days of high-octane action across virtually every discipline. Archibald, whose first ventures in track cycling were at the Glasgow velodrome, will be part of a British track team looking to flex their muscles ahead of the Paris Olympics. Britain were only fifth in the medals table at last year's track world championships in Paris with three golds -- the men's team pursuit, men's omnium and women's points race. Track world championships ahead of an Olympic Games can be cagey meetings, with the big nations sometimes reluctant to play their hands -- although the British team will be airing their cutting-edge Hope-Lotus track bike. Other events at the world championships include indoor cycling and a full para road and track programme.

Paul Reubens, who died on Sunday at age 70, will always be remembered for his beloved alter ego, the perpetually childlike Pee-wee Herman — a character so popular that it was able to carry a stage show, movies and a TV series. But Reubens also made memorable impressions playing a variety of supporting characters of the big and small screens — like Penguin’s father in “Batman Returns” and the turtleneck-wearing fixer Mr. Vargas in “The Blacklist,” just to name a few out of dozens. Here is a list of Reubens’s greatest hits and how to watch them. Actor Paul Reubens, who came to fame in the 1980s as children's TV star Pee-wee Herman, has died years after a cancer diagnosis, his team said Monday. Reubens rocketed to fame for creating the sarcastic but good-natured man-child Pee-wee Herman, a character whose red bowtie and sneering catch phrases — "I know you are, but what am I?" That eventually led to Reubens' big break, the 1985 movie "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," helmed by first-time feature film director Tim Burton. The success of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" led to Reubens landing a Saturday morning CBS show, "Pee-wee's Playhouse."

“Pee-wee’s Playhouse” premiered on CBS in 1986, the year I graduated from high school, which means I was probably too old for it. Or maybe too young.
