If the prospect of sharks lurking just off the beach wasn’t frightening enough, researchers in Brazil have discovered a new reason to be unnerved: Some of them have cocaine in their system. In a study published last week, researchers tested 13 sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and found that all had traces of cocaine in their liver and muscle tissues. The levels of cocaine found in these sharks were reported to be as much as 100 times higher than in previously observed marine life. It’s the first time this data has ever been found for any top predator.”This was the first study to analyze cocaine in sharks, following various studies on smaller species, including mollusks, crustaceans and even eels. All 13 sharks examined were found to have unfiltered cocaine in much higher concentrations than in previous studies on other animals, indicating chronic exposure to the drug.

Typhoon Gaemi was approaching Taiwan with heavy rains and powerful winds on Wednesday, after officials on the island said that they had closed schools and canceled planned military exercises. Gaemi had maximum sustained winds of 138 miles per hour on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center. That would make it a Category 4 hurricane on the five-tier scale that is used to measure tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean. Gaemi was forecast to make landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast on Wednesday night in a slightly weakened state, the island’s Central Weather Administration said. After moving away from the island on Friday, it was expected to continue heading northwest toward the coast of southeastern China.

A humpback whale that an expert said was looking for food breached the water and landed on a recreational boat near Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday, capsizing the vessel and ejecting two passengers, the United States Coast Guard said. Typhoon Gaemi is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast Wednesday evening. CNN —Rare footage captured by a camera strapped to the back of an endangered shark shows the jarring moment it was struck by a boat — prompting the animal to dash into deep waters and rest for hours. It’s not clear whether the massive 23-foot (7-meter) animal, known as a basking shark, ultimately survived the collision. The basking shark is a massive creature, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, and is among the largest fish in the world — second only to the whale shark. CNN —Sharks living off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, according to new research, the first time that the drug has been detected in free-ranging sharks. Cocaine levels were around three times higher in muscle tissue than liver tissue, according to the study, while female sharks had higher cocaine concentrations in muscle tissue compared to males. Cocaine consumption has risen massively around the world in recent decades, according to the study. Increased consumption and poor sewage treatment infrastructure has made for increased cocaine levels in the sea, say researchers. Hauser Davis said that it is “very likely” that crustaceans, fish and other animals that the sharks prey on are also contaminated with cocaine.
