Trade tensions, too, have resulted in tariffs and affected world trade in certain goods. The market for companies in this space is driven by the volume of global trade, and this so-called supply chain "complexity," Goldman noted. It sees some stocks as being able to benefit from higher supply chain "complexity." Freight-forwarding firms such as DSV , DHL Forwarding and Kuehne+Nagel are "well-placed to help their clients navigate higher complexity and shocks," Goldman said. Container lines such as Cosco, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are less directly exposed to the higher supply chain complexity, said Goldman.

There is no need for panic buying, and we encourage consumers to shop responsibly. Bill Simon, former CEO of Walmart, stressed that panic buying is serious and can have a cascading effect on domestic products. "Panic buying not only impacts the availability of imported products, but domestic products as well as consumers shift their purchase behavior," warned Simon. Walmart and Target did not immediately respond to requests about any panic buying patterns identified at their stores. John Catsimatidis, owner of the NYC super chain Gristedes, said the panic buying is occurring and showing no signs of slowing down.

Blueland CEO Sarah Paiji Yoo says she couldn't do her job without ditching a habit that hindered her first startup: trying too hard to get everything done. Paiji Yoo co-founded Blueland, which makes eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products, in 2019. That company, founded in 2011, was acquired in 2013 by PriceGrabber for an undisclosed sum — and in those two short years, Paiji Yoo found herself gravely overworked, she says. "With my first startup, I was spinning my wheels along," Paiji Yoo, 40, tells CNBC Make It. Limited money, employees, time and resources means there's more to get gone, says Paiji Yoo.

New York CNN —With barely a month to go before the US presidential election, a trifecta of economic shocks is threatening to sap Vice President Kamala Harris’ momentum on voters’ No. 1 issue: a port strike, a hurricane and an escalation of fighting in the Middle East. Price pain could crop up elsewhere if the East Coast port strike, which began Tuesday, drags on longer than a week. “If the Boeing strike and the port strike … last through the second week of October, job growth for October could be negative,” researchers at Oxford Economics wrote Wednesday. A negative jobs report hasn’t been seen in this country since December 2020, the last full month of the Trump administration.

The UK government last year accused the same Russian hacking group of conducting a “sustained unsuccessful attempts to interfere in UK political processes” over several years that hacked politicians, civil servants and journalists. The hackers operate on behalf of Russia’s FSB intelligence agency, the prime successor to the Soviet-era KGB, according to US officials. Reuters —Britain said on Thursday it would give up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a deal that would allow people displaced decades ago to return home while London retains use of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia. Britain said that the operation of Diego Garcia, a strategic military base jointly operated with the United States, was protected by the agreement, which also allows Mauritius to resettle the rest of the islands after its population was displaced. “This government inherited a situation where the long-term, secure operation of the Diego Garcia military base was under threat, with contested sovereignty and ongoing legal challenges,” British Foreign Minister David Lammy said in a statement. “Today’s agreement secures this vital military base for the future. In a joint statement, Britain and Mauritius said that the political agreement had the support and assistance of the United States and India.

Much of the office market may be mired in a downturn, but demand has been strong for high-end space. New office construction has dropped off sharply, leading to a potential upcoming shortage. That demand has persisted even as office construction has been stifled by higher interest rates and inflation, which have pushed up costs. Worries over the health of the office market have also made lenders reluctant to finance new development. 8 million square feet of that is pre-leased, meaning that there is only about 10 million square feet of upcoming available top quality space.

OpenAI's chief product officer isn't worried that the rise of open-source will cause the second. In the first vision, AI startups are in a winner-takes-all race. AdvertisementOn Wednesday, OpenAI chief product officer Kevin Weil took to the stage, where Anyscale cofounder Robert Nishihara asked him what open-source models mean for OpenAI's business. These AI models, such as Meta's Llama offerings, are freely available for almost anyone to use, while OpenAI sells access to propriety, closed models. But if downloadable, open-source models pull all prices down to the "cost of production," then Andreessen's first vision — of "infinite profits" — starts to appear a little less likely.
