TikTok has officially launched its e-commerce service TikTok Shop in the U.S.TikTok on Thursday announced it will launch a U.S. summer sale dubbed "Deals for You Days," which is positioned to compete with Amazon 's annual Prime Day. Starting July 9, TikTok Shop will be offering sales on thousands of items, including clothing, beauty products, books and decor. The announcement comes just two days after Amazon revealed that its annual Prime Day mega sale will take place on July 16-17 this year. The success of Prime Day, which Amazon introduced in 2015, has pushed several other retailers to hold competing sales. The social media platform first introduced the TikTok Shop in September 2023 as an in-app shopping experience, capitalizing on the #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt trend.

As Sam's Club opens more locations, it is trying to raise the bar for its own brand, Member's Mark. Net sales for Sam's Club totaled $86.2 billion in its most recent fiscal year, compared with $176.63 billion for Costco's U.S. clubs. Sam's Club CEO Chris Nicholas told CNBC the brand's revamp was inspired, in part, by the retailer's chief rival. Overtaking Costco and its beloved private label won't be easy for Sam's Club, said Michael Baker, a retail analyst for D.A. But he added Costco's success with Kirkland Signature created a formula that Sam's Club can follow.

Fears among top corporate CFOs about shaky consumer demand have hit a six-quarter higher, according to the latest CNBC CFO Council survey, with the Q2 survey the first time since the beginning of 2023 that over half of CFOs cited consumer demand as the biggest external risk to their business. Consumer demand fears among CFOs have been rising in recent quarters, and match evidence from the market across sectors, with fast-food chains rushing out value menus and car dealers having more difficulty moving inventory. The 54% of CFOs who cited consumer demand as the biggest risk is up from 18% a year ago, and 37% last quarter. Last quarter, almost half of CFOs forecast a 10-year yield that would dip below 4% by the end of the year. But now, CFOs have pushed out their inflation view even further.

Unemployment: Low, but with warning signs aheadThe nation’s unemployment rate stayed below 4% for 27 months, its longest such streak and a match for a period in the 1960s. That streak ended last month, when the unemployment rate rose to 4% from 3.9%. That means job seekers might find it harder to get hired. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday said most consumers are not necessarily hurting for cash, but are sick of high prices and on the hunt for bargains. "Let's suspend the notion that the consumer's totally strapped for cash, that's wrong," he said. To Cramer, consumers are flocking to bargain outfits like Walmart and Costco , and he pointed out that the latter's low-cost signature brands are especially appealing. He named TJX , Ollie's , Ross Stores and Burlington Stores , all up year-to-date at 17.83%, 29.54%, 7.48% and 23.05% respectively. "We know apparel inflation has been sticky in the consumer price index, but these four off-price chains are cutting the price of apparel aggressively," he said.

Quiet in the C-suiteThree years ago, corporate leaders openly spoke out against Donald Trump over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. But as the former president leads in many polls this time around, most in the C-suite are staying quiet. In 2021, C.E.O.s including Mary Barra of General Motors and Doug McMillon of Walmart publicly urged a peaceful transition of power. Only a handful of executives have publicly supported Trump, who was willing to go after perceived enemies in corporate American when he was in office. But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

New York CNN —Millions of Miniverse toy sets made by toymaker MGA Entertainment have been recalled because they pose a serious risk of skin burn, eye and respiratory irritation when touched, inhaled or ingested, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. The CPSC also found that the resins contain chemical compounds called “acrylates” in amounts that are prohibited in children’s products. Starting Monday, the Minneapolis-based discounter said companies that work with Shopify can apply to join Target Plus, its third-party marketplace. Target's marketplace creates a "halo" and is "an accelerant to the total business," she said. Target Plus has only a tiny fraction of the revenue and sellers of other third-party marketplaces. Sylvester would not say how much of that came from ads bought by Target Plus sellers. Target does not offer fulfillment services, instead relying on Target Plus sellers to store, pack and ship their own goods.

Experts say Shein's U.S. IPO is all but dead

The Shein logo can be seen on a smartphone, while the Chinese online retailer's website is open on a laptop. China-founded e-commerce company Shein's hopes of going public in the United States are growing slimmer by the day, according to experts, as rising tensions between Beijing and the U.S. roil business and trade. A London IPO could, in theory, be easier than a U.S. offering, according to Bochanis. If Shein's London IPO succeeds, it is unlikely to keep pursuing a U.S. offering, said University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter, who studies IPOs. It became one of the first prominent Chinese companies to do so in the U.S. even as the Biden administration has increasingly cracked down on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
