Robert Roberson, 57, was set to become the first person in the U.S. executed in a "shaken baby" case until members of the state House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee issued a subpoena to have him testify at a legislative hearing this week. One reason why Republicans are optimistic about their chances to retake the state is Pennsylvania’s voter registration numbers: While there are still more registered Democrats than registered Republicans, in March 2021, there were 630,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in Pennsylvania. Overall, it shows that there are about 110,000 fewer registered Democrats in 2024 than in 2021, and about 220,000 more registered Republicans. Over 160,000 people who were registered Democrats in 2021 are now registered Republicans. But new voter registrations have not played a role in the narrowing Democratic Party registration edge. In fact, slightly more people who have registered since 2021 are now registered Democrats than registered Republicans.

U.S. and Israeli negotiators will travel to Doha in the coming days, the top diplomats for U.S. and Qatar said Thursday, intending to resume long-stalled talks to reach a ceasefire deal and secure the release of hostages in Gaza. The announcement comes after Israeli forces killed Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas, earlier this month and the militant group continues its search for a new leader. Among the options is an Egyptian proposal, as previously reported by NBC News, for a two-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of six hostages. Qatari Sheikh Mohammed said there are ongoing discussions between Egypt and Hamas even today and he “hopes the discussions will yield something positive” for the talks that follow. Speaking from Doha, Blinken said the U.S. had seen Israel take some positive steps but it is not enough to get assistance to the borders of Gaza.

Republicans are making a last-ditch effort to flip Nevada's Senate seat, optimistic that a strong performance from former President Donald Trump in the state could boost Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown. Senate Leadership Fund, the main GOP super PAC involved in Senate races, is planning to spend $6.2 million on TV, radio and digital ads in Nevada, according to ad spending figures shared first with NBC News. SLF has spent tens of millions of dollars in other Senate battlegrounds in recent months. “It might be the best environment Republicans have seen in a presidential year in 20 years,” Nevada GOP strategist Jeremy Hughes recently told NBC News. The mayor of Waukesha, the seat of a reliably Republican county outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Wednesday — the first time the formerly Republican city leader is supporting a Democrat for commander in chief, the campaign said. Wisconsin is a key battleground state that could be a critical piece of Harris or Trump's path to victory on election night. In 2000, just 32% of voters in Waukesha County voted for Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, while in 2020 39% of voters there supported President Joe Biden. On Thursday, GOP former Michigan Rep. Fred Upton also endorsed Harris, saying in a statement that he has never voted for a Democrat for president "until now." Other former GOP members of Congress that have endorsed Harris include Liz Cheney, R-Wyo and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. Harris also touts endorsements from GOP former Sen. The final pre-election edition of the closely watched monthly jobs report is set to be published Nov. 1, four days ahead of Election Day. All eyes are now on a handful of states expected to see razor-thin vote margins, likely to be determined by a small but crucial pool of persuadable voters. The exact impact on the jobs report is unclear. The strike, which kicked off in September, has coincided with layoff notices sent to 17,000 workers in Boeing's commercial aviation division. While the Keystone State's unemployment rate climbed by a tenth of a percentage point compared with the September 2023 figure, its latest reading, at 3.4%, marked two straight years below 4%.

LOS ANGELES — Dueling lawsuits against UCLA each describe a rise in antisemitic and anti-Palestinian bias since protests erupted on campus last year over the Israel-Hamas war. “UCLA has failed to provide Jewish students, faculty, and staff with the protection promised by such policies," the amended complaint says. Both complaints refer to task forces UCLA established to examine antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. The antisemitism report was released this month, and the one on anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim bias came out in May. The Atlantic magazine has found itself in Elon Musk’s crosshairs after it fact-checked a fake image he shared that depicted an article with a headline that never actually ran in the publication. The statement did not mention Musk by name. According to The Atlantic, it is one of several notable instances in the last several years in which faked images of articles from the magazine have gone viral. Both Musk’s and the user’s posts with the fake article were later marked with “Community Note” that clarified that the image was “not a real article.” The Community Note also attributed the edited image to the user and said it was “a satirical edit/photoshop of another article.” Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Forbes reported that in August, Musk reshared a post including a manipulated headline that resembled the British newspaper The Telegraph.

EV supporters point to dozens of new EV and battery plants announced in Michigan in the last two years. Political strategists told Business Insider that the anti-EV messaging was drowning out positive ones in Michigan, putting Democrats on the defensive in a critical battleground. "We've run some advertising trying to make the massive surge of new EV manufacturing at jobs in Michigan famous, because nobody knows about them," Murphy said. But that analysis didn't account for jobs created by new EV and battery manufacturing plants popping up across the country. Hong Kong’s Secretary of Development Bernadette Linn said that “the discovery is of great significance and provides new evidence for research on palaeoecology in Hong Kong,” the statement read. The dinosaur fossils will also be on public display at Hong Kong’s Heritage Discovery Centre from Friday onwards. Hong Kong's Antiquities and Monu/APExperts in paleontology say the landmark discovery is a big deal for Hong Kong, a city with a complex geological history and ever-changing weather patterns. New York CNN —A Colorado man has filed the first lawsuit against McDonald’s relating to its E. coli outbreak linked to Quarter Pounders that, so far, has led to at least 49 illnesses across 10 states, including one death. The lawsuit was filed one day after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert warning that dozens of people reported eating the Quarter Pounder sandwich at McDonald’s before becoming sick. The lawsuit, a copy of which was posted online by Bloomberg Law, accuses McDonald’s of product liability, negligence and breach of implied warranties. “The McDonald’s E. coli Outbreak will be one of the most significant food poisoning outbreaks this year,” Simon said in a press release. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign event at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2024. A stark shift toward former President Donald Trump on the political gambling platform Polymarket this month stoked scrutiny about four accounts that have collectively spent over $28 million betting on the Republican nominee to win the 2024 presidential election. Polymarket on Thursday confirmed what a number of experts have suspected: All four accounts are controlled by a single trader. The company insisted that it has found no evidence that the trader is trying to juice Trump's odds on the political betting market. The scrutiny on the Polymarket trades comes as political betting markets have taken on a much more prominent role in the 2024 election cycle.
