SRINAGAR, India — Voters lined up outside polling stations in India’s Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday to vote in the first provincial election being held in a decade in the Himalayan region that has grappled with years of militant violence. Jammu and Kashmir is India’s only Muslim-majority territory and has been at the center of a dispute with neighboring Pakistan since 1947. Until 2019, Indian-ruled Jammu and Kashmir had a special status of partial autonomy that was revoked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) government has said that revoking the region’s special status restored normalcy in the area and helped its development. The contest this time is between regional parties promising to restore the special status, India’s main opposition Congress party which has allied with a prominent regional group, as well as the BJP, which is pitching development and a permanent end to militancy.

NBC News’ Steve Kornacki announced that his mom, Anne B. (Ramonas) Kornacki, has died. (Ramonas) Kornacki, 1947-2024,” he simply wrote in an X post. The obituary described Anne B. Kornacki as a native of Waterbury, Connecticut, and a “devoted wife, mother, grandma and sister.”According to the obit, Anne B. Kornacki, died “unexpectedly” on Friday, Sept. 13 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine, surrounded by her family. The couple welcomed two children, Steve Kornacki and Katie Kornacki, and later opened a bed and breakfast.

Atlanta police on Tuesday continued to search for two robbers captured on video dropping into a check cashing store from the ceiling and grabbing stacks of cash from a safe. The images appear to be taken from the security video. The department also released some of that morning's video, captured from inside the store as its ceiling was breached and including the robbers' exit. A robber falls through the ceiling of a check cashing business in southwest Atlanta on Sept. 3. They fled out the rear portal, and video captured a woman walking by just after the door was opened.
