Read previewDemocrats are still trying to pick up the pieces from President Joe Biden's poor debate performance last week. Biden himself sought to reassure donors of his continued viability during a series of campaign fundraising events on Saturday. And during a pre-planned gathering at Camp David, The New York Times reported that Biden's relatives encouraged him to remain in the race. On Sunday, Biden's family relayed their support for the president by urging him to stay in the presidential race, according to The Times. But Biden's Friday rally in the state was a reflection that he's here to stay and he's not going to be easily dislodged from office.

The 30-year-old high jumper cleared 1.89 meters at the Ukrainian Athletics Championships on Sunday, not enough to qualify for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris. Many athletes have moved abroad in order to continue their careers and train for this year’s Games. This means that teams of Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be considered, while athletes who actively support the war against Ukraine will also be ineligible. No reference to either country will be made at the Games through the athletes’ participation, such as flags, anthems or national colors. “We’re not friends, we’re not competitors,” Ryzhykova told CNN about facing Russian and Belarusian athletes.

President Biden’s family is urging him to stay in the race and keep fighting despite last week’s disastrous debate performance, even as some members of his clan privately expressed exasperation at how he was prepared for the event by his staff, people close to the situation said on Sunday. Mr. Biden huddled with his wife, children and grandchildren at Camp David while he tried to figure out how to tamp down Democratic anxiety. While his relatives are acutely aware of how poorly he did against former President Donald J. Trump, they argued that he could still show the country that he is capable of serving for another four years. Aides were burning phone lines over the weekend to prevent major elected officials and financial supporters from abandoning him. Read previewNearly 80% of wealthy art collectors want their masterpieces to stay in the family, according to a Bank of America survey. For instance, the survey found that collectors between 21 and 43 have a greater appreciation for sculptures and antiquities than older art aficionados. Rich art collectors are reluctant to address the issue, according to Rosemary Ringwald, head of art planning at Bank of America's private bank. Collectors are increasingly picking art executors or art trustees to oversee their possessions after they die, she said. The ideal executor does not have a financial interest in the art and isn't a prospective owner of it.

While criminal charges against corporations are fairly common, the overwhelming majority are against small, closely-held companies. Earlier criminal settlement now at riskThe potential charges hanging over Boeing currently revolve around that January 2021 deferred prosecution agreement. They have argued Boeing should face new criminal charges and pay a fine as great as $24.9 billion. In May, the Justice Department said it was looking into bringing criminal charges against Boeing once again due to a potential violation of that January 2021 agreement. Arlen said it is common for smaller companies to be forced out of business by criminal charges and the penalties that follow.

The find suggested that members of the community cared for and looked after the vulnerable child, who lived at least 146,000 years ago. The research is at odds with the image of Neanderthals, ancient human relatives who went extinct around 40,000 years ago, as brutish cavemen. The study did not include precise dating of the bone, which would require extraction of ancient DNA, but Neanderthals occupied the site 146,000 to 273,000 years ago. Study of the fossil revealed abnormalities in the ear bone. “For decades, it has been known that Neanderthals cared for and looked after their vulnerable companions,” Conde-Valverde said.

He was among the more than 1,300 pilgrims who died during this year’s Hajj as temperatures in Saudi Arabia reached record levels. The tragedy, resulting in one of the highest Hajj death tolls in years, has brought attention to the shadowy industry of unauthorized pilgrimage agents. It is unclear how many unauthorized pilgrims made it to this year’s Hajj, but Saudi news outlet Al Sharq Al Awsat reported Tuesday that 141,000 such pilgrims received free medical treatment during the Hajj season. Clamping down on unauthorized pilgrimageBefore this year’s Hajj season started, Saudi authorities warned pilgrims against using agents selling unauthorized Hajj packages and had been in contact with other governments in an effort to crack down on the trend. Authorities had also arrested some illegal agents and issued warnings about penalties for those found to assist unauthorized pilgrims.

A judge on Tuesday loosened a gag order on Donald J. Trump in his Manhattan criminal case, allowing the former president to criticize witnesses who took the stand against him as well as others involved in the trial that led to his conviction. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, who presided over Mr. Trump’s seven-week trial this spring, ruled that Mr. Trump is now free to complain about the prosecution’s witnesses, including his former fixer, Michael D. Cohen. Once Mr. Trump is sentenced on July 11, the judge ruled, he can publicly assail others who are currently covered by the gag order, including prosecutors and their relatives. Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is still subject to a different order prohibiting him from releasing the identities of jurors, or publicly attacking them by name. But under Justice Merchan’s ruling, Mr. Trump can now complain broadly about the jury that convicted him.

Scientists recently identified the animal’s nerve cord by using a topsy-turvy twist. In 2012, after decades of studying Pikaia fossils, researchers described its fossilized internal structures in great detail. However, recent analysis of Pikaia fossils by another team of scientists, published June 11 in the journal Current Biology, has upended this view and all other earlier studies about Pikaia. The presumed blood vessel was a nerve cord, a feature associated with the animal group known as chordates, in the phylum Chordata. While there are no living analogues for Pikaia, the fossil arthropod data gave the scientists a more detailed frame of reference for Pikaia’s nerve cord.

In 2021, retired Gen. Michael T. Flynn, Donald J. Trump’s first national security adviser, became chairman of a 75-year-old nonprofit organization — the kind of small charity where chairmen typically work for free. But Mr. Flynn received a salary of $40,000, for working two hours per week. Mr. Flynn’s charity also paid one of his brothers, two of his sisters, his niece and his sister-in-law. Since leaving the Trump administration under an ethical cloud, Michael Flynn has converted his Trump-world celebrity into a lucrative and sprawling family business. He and his relatives have marketed the retired general as a martyr, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for a legal-defense fund and then pocketing leftover money.

During the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, one of the most important events on the Muslim calendar, at least 450 died under a scorching sun as they prayed at sacred sites around the holy city of Mecca. The pilgrims, some who have saved their whole lives for the hajj, spend days walking and sleeping in tents during their journey to Mecca, the holist city for Muslims. The hajj is one of Islam’s five pillars, and all Muslims who are physically or financially able are obliged to embark on the pilgrimage. Indonesia has so far reported the most deaths, 199, and India reported 98. The number of dead is expected to rise as neither Saudi Arabia nor Egypt, where many pilgrims come from, have released death tolls for their citizens.
