Harrison Ford gets a new snake species named for him

But the highlight of the trip to South America was discovering a species of snake new to science, which the team named for action icon Harrison Ford — a moment of levity in an otherwise dramatic excursion, noted Dr. Edgar Lehr, the lead author of a scientific paper describing the snake species. At the time, Lehr, who is a professor of biology at Illinois Wesleyan University, thought: “Wouldn’t this be cool to dedicate this new species to Harrison Ford? The national park is near “the VRAEM (Valley of Rivers Apurímac, Ene, Mantaro) area, which is the center of Peru‘s coca production and narco-trafficking,” according to the study. Otishi is considered “Peru‘s least scientifically surveyed national park,” according to the study. “This is very important (work), because we can only protect what is known,” Lehr said of documenting species new to scientists.

Electronic warfare has played a prominent role during the war in Ukraine. This has put fresh impetus behind the US Army's electronic-warfare upgrades. Concern about electronic warfare, or EW, isn't new, nor is the US deficient in all EW aspects. For its part, Russia has been able to use electronic warfare to send Ukraine's GPS-guided JDAM glide bombs and HIMARS rockets off course. Most armies — or at least the high-tech ones — are vulnerable to electronic warfare, but the US military is especially vulnerable because its way of war is so dependent on electronic communications.

Below are comments from analysts on the inflation data:XING ZHAOPENG, SENIOR CHINA STRATEGIST, ANZ, SHANGHAI"Both CPI and PPI in year-on-year terms fell into negative territory and confirmed economic deflation. "With destocking and credit expansion, we expect PPI and CPI will rebound from the bottom in the fourth quarter. The CPI deflation may put more pressure on the government to consider additional fiscal stimulus to mitigate the challenge." XIA CHUN, CHIEF ECONOMIST, YINTECH INVESTMENT HOLDINGS, HONG KONG"The lower inflation data reflects weak demand on the mainland, which is biggest challenge facing China's economy. It also shows China's slower-than-expected economic rebound is not strong enough to offer the weaker global demand and lift commodity prices."

The consumer price index fell by 0.3% in July from a year ago, but was up by 0.2% when compared with June, according to the National Bureau of Statistics Wednesday. The year-on-year CPI print for July was slightly better than expectations for a 0.4% decline, according to analysts polled by Reuters. It was still the first year-on-year decline since early 2021, according to official data accessed via Wind Information. The producer price index fell by 4.4% in July from a year ago, better than the 5.4% decline in June, the data showed. However, the year-on-year PPI read was worse than the 4.1% forecast by a Reuters poll.

While Oppenheimer will always be recognized as the father of the atomic bomb, his early contributions to quantum mechanics form the bedrock of modern quantum chemistry. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation offers a way to simplify the complex problem of describing molecules at the atomic level. This field, known as computational quantum chemistry, has grown exponentially with the widespread availability of faster, more powerful high-end computational resources. Nevertheless, the application of quantum chemistry made possible by the Born-Oppenheimer approximation will continue to expand and improve. In the future, a new era of quantum computers could make computational quantum chemistry even more robust by performing faster computations on increasingly large molecular systems.

A new study shows that alcohol-related deaths among women are rising at a faster rate than those among men, particularly for people 65 and older. Over the past 15 years, alcohol-related deaths have steadily increased in the United States and, historically, more men have died from alcohol-related causes. From 2018 to 2020, alcohol-related deaths increased by 12.5 percent per year for men, but by 14.7 percent per year for women. The study highlighted rising rates among older women, in particular: From 2012 to 2020, alcohol-related deaths among women 65 and older increased by 6.7 percent per year, compared with an increase of 5.2 percent per year for men in the same age range. The study does not pinpoint the reasons behind the rise in female alcohol-related deaths, said Dr. Ibraheem Karaye, an assistant professor of population health at Hofstra University and the lead author of the study.

At Fidelity, the allocations to equities in retirement funds are about 10% higher than where they should be, Shamrell said. watch nowSome of those investors with excess stock exposure may simply need to rebalance after recent market highs, Shamrell said. Experts say having the right mix of equities can go a long way toward helping retirees meet their financial goals. Importantly, a client's personal circumstances drive these goals, McClanahan noted.

A journalist breaks down the prompts he uses to identify errors Google Bard introduces. They include telling the bot to list the facts it relied on or to explain its thinking step-by-step. No matter how specific your prompts are, it will occasionally cite made-up sources and introduce outright errors. By using a few carefully honed prompts, I can identify and deal with any inaccuracies at a glance. Sure, I still need to manually verify whatever Bard spits out, but these four prompts help me fact-check quickly, saving me time by making the artificial intelligence do the heavy lifting.

The fact that U.S. equities are more expensive than Chinese stocks is nothing new. BEIJING, July 13 (Reuters) - China's exports contracted last month at their fastest pace since the onset three years ago of the COVID-19 pandemic, as an ailing global economy puts mounting pressure on Chinese policymakers for fresh stimulus measures. Momentum in China's post-pandemic recovery has slowed after a brisk pickup in the first quarter, with analysts now downgrading their projections for the economy for the rest of the year as factory output slows in the face of persistently weak global demand. Outbound shipments from the world's second-largest economy slumped a worse-than-expected 12.4% year-on-year in June, data from China's Customs Bureau showed on Thursday, following a drop of 7.5% in May. Imports contracted 6.8%, steeper than an expected 4.0% decline and the previous month's 4.5% fall. With exports accounting for about one-fifth of the economy and the troubled property sector for about one-third, China's prospects have dimmed for a quick recovery after COVID-related lockdowns battered the economy in 2022.
