Portions of Trump's deposition in E. Jean Carroll's defamation suit were unsealed Friday. In it, he attacks Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, threatening to sue her personally. At another point in the deposition Trump referred to Kaplan as being friends with "Cuomo." Carroll's deposition currently has a trial date set for April 10, but it's unclear if it will make it that far. Carroll initially wasn't able to sue Trump for the alleged assault, because the statute of limitations had expired.

Companies Baker Hughes Co FollowSINGAPORE, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Oil prices climbed on Monday as the borders reopened in China, the world's top crude importer, boosting the outlook for fuel demand growth and offsetting global recession concerns. Brent crude futures were up $1.49, or 1.9%, at $80.06 a barrel as of 0745 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.43, or 1.9%, to $75.20. But for investors, consumers and the Federal Reserve, inflation remains a major economic concern, just as it was in 2022. The hope is that inflation pressures will cool even more dramatically as the year progresses. We believe inflation peaked in June,” said Nancy Tengler, CEO and chief investment officer with Laffer Tengler Investments, in a report. Inflation impact on the Fed and housingWhat’s more, lower levels of inflation should allow the Fed to keep slowing its pace of interest rate hikes. But if inflation pressures continue to abate – and the Fed acknowledges that by pulling back on rate hikes – then the housing market may rebound.

Jan 6 (Reuters) - A 6-year-old boy shot and wounded a teacher on Friday at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, police said, prompting consternation from local officials who vowed to find answers and prevent such an event from happening again. New York CNN —New York City public schools will ban students and teachers from using ChatGPT, a powerful new AI chatbot tool, on the district’s networks and devices, an official confirmed to CNN on Thursday. “Due to concerns about negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content, access to ChatGPT is restricted on New York City Public Schools’ networks and devices,” Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary for the New York public schools, said in a statement. New York City appears to be the first major school district to crack down on ChatGPT, barely a month after the tool first launched. While there are genuine concerns about how ChatGPT could be used, it’s unclear how widely adopted it is among students. But many educators fear students will use the tool to cheat on assignments.

A plant worker uses a crane to lift a cask of molten aluminum a Century Aluminum Company plant in Hawesville, Ky. in 2017. Of the five remaining facilities, only the Century Aluminum Sebree plant in Robards, which employs 625 workers, and a smaller Alcoa plant in Massena, New York, run at full capacity. Phillip McKenna/NBC NewsSteinsen, of Century Aluminum, said the company has no plans to shut down its Sebree facility in Robards. In 2019, 7,510 metric tons of PFCs were emitted from global aluminum production, according to a study published last year in the Journal of Geophysical Research — Atmospheres.
Specifically, 91% of colleges are understating the net price, which can mislead students into taking on more debt. Current federal law does not require colleges to follow standards when presenting financial aid packages. Not counting student loans in the total cost could present a misleading picture of how expensive a degree would be, pushing students further into debt. "Colleges that estimate the net price by subtracting student loans from the cost of attendance do not present the full net price because students generally must repay their student loans eventually," the report said. "Additionally, subtracting student loans in the net price estimate presents loans as the default method for paying for college, potentially encouraging students to borrow more than they otherwise would."
These standards are based on factors including the borrower's financial stability and the state of the housing market and economy. Finding the right size for the credit box is much easier said than done. A tidal wave of foreclosures followed, plunging the US housing market — and the global economy — into chaos. Even just stabilizing the credit box over time could also help smooth out some of the boom-and-bust cycles that have come to define the housing market. "If we do not address this intrinsic cyclicality, the housing market will continue to experience boom-bust cycles, leaving destruction in their wake," the paper said.

Formal organizations like the Oath Keepers no longer define the American right-wing landscape. If Biden’s election was illegitimate, the Oath Keepers were ready to defend Trump’s legitimate one. And indeed, the trial has revealed the brazenness of the Oath Keepers, as well as some profound shifts happening in the American right. The evidence of a seditious conspiracy introduced in the Oath Keepers’ trial was damning, yet obvious. While certainly more polished, some of Masters’ talking points would not be out of place at an Oath Keepers meeting.

Twitter owner Elon Musk claimed on Monday in a series of tweets that Apple had threatened to remove the Twitter app from the App Store as part of its app review moderation process. "Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won't tell us why," Musk tweeted. Apple's App Store is the only way to distribute software to iPhones. If the Twitter app were pulled, the social network would lose one of its main distribution platforms, although the service is available for the web. In addition, Apple requires iPhone app makers to pay between 15% and 30% of any digital goods sold through their apps.
"We really need to figure out a way to cure the disease and fix the problem," Levine said. "The rising cost of college can put valuable options out of reach for students who need them the most. Grants, when based on financial need, are a key step toward a more equitable system." Biden noted his plan was a "one-time" relief measure and borrowers would not see another broad loan forgiveness action during his term. While its implications are significant — the relief would wipe out the entire balances for 20 million borrowers — it's currently blocked.
