Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation, is seeking communications between the administration and social media companies, like Facebook-owner Meta. “The Biden-Harris Administration has advertised its willingness to manipulate the content of social media sites,” Mace wrote, pointing to the administration’s 2021 admission that it worked with social media companies to flag misinformation on their platforms, including related to Covid-19. “The White House has not apologized for this activity or indicated that it would cease and desist from engaging in such behavior," Mace continued. Conservatives have accused the White House of pressuring companies like Meta and Twitter to take down content that didn’t serve the administration politically. Boeing machinists voted against a new labor deal that included 35% wage increases over four years, their union said Wednesday, extending a more than five-week strike that has halted most of the company’s aircraft production, which is centered in the Seattle area. The strike is costing the company about $1 billion a month, according to S&P Global Ratings. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union had originally sought wage increases of 40%. The strike began as Boeing was working to ramp up production of the 737 and other aircraft. Spirit AeroSystems last week said it would temporarily furlough about 700 workers and that layoffs or other furloughs are possible if Boeing machinists’ strike continues.

But there are some weak points — like a growing federal debt load. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt. Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic. While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year.
