“The fighting has been going on for four days,” Vitalii Barabash, the head of the Avdiivka city military administration, told Ukrainian national television on Friday. Both small arms battles and artillery duels.”According to Barabash, Russia has been “firing everything they have available” at the city in a bid to encircle Ukrainian fighters. They are not human beings, they are titans.”Ukrainian President Voloydymr Zelensky also said his country’s troops were keeping Russian forces at bay. Avdiivka, a city very close to the Donetsk city airport, had already been the front line between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists since 2014. It is seen by Ukrainian and Russian forces as a heavily fortified stronghold, with entrenchments built up over the past eight years.

KYIV (Reuters) - Russia has destroyed almost 300,000 metric tons of grain since July in attacks on Ukraine's port facilities and on ships, the Ukrainian government said on Friday, underscoring the war's threat to global food security. In summer, Moscow quit a U.N.-brokered deal that had allowed exports of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea safely. Russia has attacked port facilities on both the Black Sea and Danube River. Kubrakov said 21 grain-loaded vessels have already used a new "humanitarian" grain corridor in the Black Sea that Kyiv established in August. He said that under the previous U.N. Black Sea Grain Initiative, Ukraine had exported 33 million tonnes of grain, with 60% of that shipped to African and Asian countries.

Oct 9 (Reuters) - Ukrainian forces are making some headway in both the eastern and southern theatres of their four-month-old counteroffensive, military officials said on Monday. Russian accounts of the fighting said Moscow's forces had repelled Ukrainian attacks near the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut and inflicted heavy casualties in strikes on Ukrainian positions outside the city. In the south, Kyiv wants to advance to the Sea of Azov to sever a Russian land bridge linking areas it occupies in the south and east. Ukrainian prosecutors in Donetsk region, the focal point of Russia's campaign in the east, said Russian forces had shelled areas east of the Russian-held town of Donetsk, killing one person. Oct 8 (Reuters) - A dozen people were wounded, including a 27-year-old woman and her 9-month-old baby, in a Russian attack on the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, its governor said on Sunday. "The Kherson region experienced another terrible night," Governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on the Telegram messaging app. The woman and the infant were hospitalised with moderate wounds, he said, adding that a 33-year-old Red Cross medic was also wounded. Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces carried out 59 attacks on Kherson, the region's administration said on Telegram, including 19 instances of shelling of Kherson city, the region's administrative centre. Ukraine heads into winter with a hobbled energy system

Ukraine declines to share detailed data on the impact of attacks on its energy system, treating it as sensitive information during wartime. Kyiv School of Economics' research centre estimated the direct damage to Ukraine's energy infrastructure at $8.8 billion as of June. Last winter, Ukraine was helped by relatively mild weather, rapid repairs, nuclear power and electricity imports from Europe, but some officials expect tougher conditions this time. Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, head of national grid operator Ukrenergo, said the main grid, one of the most damaged parts of the energy system, was ready to transmit winter volumes of electricity. "The energy system is not as reliable and with a smaller reserve capacity than it was before the targeted strikes," he said.

KYIV, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Russia carried out new drone attacks on Ukraine overnight and killed two people in shelling of the southern city of Kherson on Thursday morning, Ukrainian officials said. Nine of the drones that were destroyed were shot down over the Kirovohrad region, regional governor Andriy Raikovych said. The Kherson region governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, gave few details of the shelling of Kherson but said a man and a woman had been killed, and another man had been wounded. A 64-year-old woman was also wounded in morning shelling of the southern town of Nikopol in the central region of Dnipropetrovsk, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said. Although Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians, many have been killed in attacks that have hit residential areas as well as energy, defence, port, grain and other facilities.

The village and other parts of the region were seized by Russia early in the war and recaptured by Ukraine in September 2022. The village is only 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Kupiansk, a key focus of the Russian military effort. Ukraine’s air force said that the country’s air defenses intercepted 24 out of 29 Iranian-made drones that Russia launched at the Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions. Roman Starovoit said that Ukrainian drones attacked infrastructure facilities in several areas, resulting in power cuts. He also said that Ukrainian forces fired artillery at the border town of Rylsk, wounding a resident and damaging several houses.

Ukrainian officials also said Kyiv's forces were resisting Russian attempts to reverse gains on the eastern front made by Kyiv since it launched the counteroffensive in June. Ukraine's southern group of forces outlined advances as Kyiv presses on with a drive towards the Sea of Azov to split Russian-occupied territory in the south and east. The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces, in its evening report, said its forces had repelled Russian attacks near Robotyne and nearby Verbove. The General Staff report also said Russian forces had been unsuccessful in attempts to recapture ground near Andriivka - a village in the east recaptured by Ukrainian forces last month. It also said it had downed 31 drones launched by Kyiv overnight over three southern Russian regions, but reported no casualties or damage.

"Guys, sooner or later it will catch up with you," said Yabchanka, who was back home in western Ukraine waiting for his wounded leg to heal before returning to his unit. Ukrainians still often dismiss Russian troops as incompetent after battlefield failures in 2022 and the recruitment of thousands of convicts to fill their ranks. No change to overall mobilisation plans has been announced and analysts say the government has to consider the broader economy and social stability. He told CNN country wasn't leaning heavily on vehicles and instead using small groups of infantry. The general said this would be a benefit come winter because bad weather will slow them down less. AdvertisementAdvertisementWorsening weather will likely not seriously impact Ukraine's counteroffensive against Russia because it's not heavily reliant on vehicles, a Ukrainian general told CNN. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe comments were made on September 22, and were re-published on October 1 in an analysis of Ukraine's looming winter tactics. A minimum criterion for the success of Ukraine's counteroffensive would be seizing back control of the town of Tokmak, which lies just behind the front line, Tarnavsky told CNN.

A cargo ship carrying Ukrainian grain, and another originating from Ukraine, sail at the entrance of Bosphorus, in the Black Sea off the coast off Kumkoy, north of Istanbul, on November 2, 2022. Five new ships are on their way to Ukrainian sea ports using a new corridor opened to resume predominantly agricultural exports, an alternative arrangement to the Black Sea grain deal blocked by Russia, the MarineTraffic database showed on Sunday. The MarineTraffic database showed earlier on Sunday that three cargo vessels left Ukrainian Black Sea ports after loading, the latest to sail since Kyiv set up a temporary "humanitarian corridor" after Russia quit a deal allowing safe passage for Ukraine exports. The database identified the five vessels heading toward the ports as Olga, Ida, Forza Doria, New Legacy and Danny Boy. And Kyiv has dramatically increased long-range missile and drone attacks against Russian military hubs: command centers, fuel and ammunition supplies, transport hubs. There is anecdotal evidence of this from other sources, but not to the degree that the Russian military machine would be damaged. Alexander Ermochenko/ReutersBut just as they seek to degrade Russian air defenses, the Ukrainians have made strides in improving their own. “Our air defense system has become even more comprehensive and experienced … By the winter, it will become even stronger.”Energy production has increased too.
