Employees who brewed and served Starbucks coffee, whom Starbucks called baristas, handwrote customers’ names on their drink orders. But Starbucks’ business has transformed, and it has struggled to maintain its identity as that third place along the way. In some stores, customers complained online that Starbucks pulled out comfortable chairs and replaced them with hard wooden stools. Mobile ordering was another major step in Starbucks’ road to becoming primarily a take-away business. Starbucks also is opening 2,000 new stores, including traditional Starbucks locations, pick-up stores, delivery-only stores and drive thru-only locations.

New York CNN —Stocks are soaring this year, but that could soon change as election chaos takes the market on a rollercoaster ride. But this has been a destabilizing week for US stocks and the market trajectory could be shifting. The Dow was down more than 430 points, or 1%, in the morning trading session on Friday as the tech outage continued to rattle investors. Former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said in an interview with Bloomberg that Taiwan should pay for its own defense. The bright sideInvestors have been largely resilient this year and some financial bigwigs say the election won’t change that.

New York CNN —Bud Light, formerly the top-selling beer in the United States, has had a tough year since a boycott upended the industry. Modelo Especial, made by rival Constellation Brands, remains the top-selling beer at retailers in the US after surpassing Bud Light last year. For the past four weeks ending on July 6, Bud Light captured 6.5% of beer dollar sales at retail stores compared to 7.3% for Michelob Ultra, NIQ data shows. Michelob Ultra’s rise to the top isn’t solely because of the decline of Bud Light. For Bud Light, its marketing efforts pivoted to win back conservatives.

New York CNN —US stocks sold off broadly Thursday as Wall Street continued to shed tech stocks. The Dow fell 464 points, or 1.1%, retreating from a record high reached a day ago. Investors have this week moved out of the Magnificent Seven tech stocks that powered the market to repeated record highs this year. Shares of smaller companies that tend to do well in a lower-rate environment began rallying last week, helping the Dow reach fresh highs. Tech stocks also took a hit this week after Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the Biden administration is mulling plans to impose more sanctions on Chinese tech firms and to heighten semiconductor trade restrictions between the US and China.

But there’s a small, powerful sect of Silicon Valley billionaires who are carving a path for the maybe-Trumpers and the MAGA-curious in the tech world. David Sacks, the billionaire tech investor, co-hosted a fundraiser last month at his San Francisco home and spoke at the Republican National Convention on Monday. In the last election cycle, the few Trump backers that existed in the Valley largely kept their support under the radar. Their numbers are still small, but they’re no longer hiding, and their wallets are open. And, as Kovacevich notes, just because there are a few big names turning toward Trump, “they’re not speaking for everybody.”“In fact, most of the big company CEOs aren’t terribly involved in partisan politics,” Kovacevich says.

New York CNN —The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is closing Wednesday, ending 34 years in business. It will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a soaring 700-foot-tall hotel tower in the shape of a guitar, similar to its Florida property. Architects told CNN affiliate KSNV-TV that the tropical design created by Wynn was meant to resemble an oasis in the chaotic Las Vegas Strip. MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and sold it in 2022 for more than $1 billion to Hard Rock International. New York CNN —There’s a popular idea in political discourse known as the horseshoe theory. The idea is that if you map ideologies on a horseshoe-shaped spectrum, the far right and the far left are actually more closely aligned than the centrists on either side. Missouri Republican Sen. The Nasdaq Composite index tumbled 2.8%, logging its worst day since December 2022. Investors are also selling tech stocks after a cool inflation report last week and stronger-than-expected retail sales data on Tuesday pushed up bets for a rate cut in September. Microsoft (MSFT) shares fell 1.3%, Apple (AAPL) shares slid 2.5%, Amazon (AMZN) shares declined 2.6%, Alphabet shares declined 1.6%, Tesla shares slipped 3.1% and Meta Platforms shares lost 5.7%.

New York CNN —Supreme, the trendy streetwear clothier adored by celebrities and cool kids alike, has been sold to an eyewear manufacturer for substantially less than it sold for just four years ago. Italian company EssilorLuxottica announced Wednesday that it’s buying Supreme for $1.5 billion in cash from VF Corp. (VFC), the parent company of Vans and Dickies, which bought the brand for $2.1 billion in 2020. Supreme “perfectly aligns with our innovation and development journey, offering us a direct connection to new audiences, languages and creativity,” EssilorLuxottica said in a statement. The company added that the brand will have its “own space” in its portfolio and marks its first-ever apparel brand acquisition. “Buying a streetwear brand at a time when that aesthetic has gone off the boil is risky, and it is not clear what EssilorLuxottica intends to do to revive Supreme’s fortunes,” Saunders said.

New York CNN —Gas prices could soon soar across the Chicago metropolitan area after a tornado narrowly missed a major ExxonMobil refinery outside of Chicago Monday night, knocking out power to the facility. The refinery, know as ExxonMobil’s Joliet Refinery, is located in neighboring Channahon, Illinois. The line of storms that hit the area Monday night produced 11 tornadoes in the greater Chicago area, including the one that hit Channahon, according to the National Weather Service. It will take a few days to return the Joliet refinery to normal production, assuming no damage occurred beyond the power outage, Lipow said. But one narrative has quickly taken hold in parts of the right-wing media ecosystem: The security failure was the result of workforce diversity initiatives and women working as Secret Service agents. Tragedy strikes and traders (or trading algorithms) sniff out a way to make money off of it. Stocks also went on a tear as Covid-19 killed millions and gutted economies across the globe. “The market’s up today, but the market’s up every day,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, tells me. Whether or not the political bump lasts, some traders did seize on the moment to double down on so-called Trump trades. In short, when the yield curve gets steeper, that’s a sign bond traders are nervous.

The Republican Party’s campaign platform promises to “end Democrats’ unlawful and un-American crypto crackdown.”Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group, the former president’s social media company, popped 35.6%. At current prices, Trump’s 114.75 million shares in Trump Media are worth about $5.6 billion. Trading under the ticker symbol “DJT,” Trump Media has achieved a massive valuation despite making little revenue and Truth Social remaining a tiny player in social media. For months, Trump Media has been a way for investors to bet on Trump returning to the White House, making Truth Social the primary platform for presidential communications. Trump Media recently announced it has been added to the Russell 1000 Index of large-cap stocks and the Russell 3000 Index. As a result, countless retail investors now own a piece of Trump Media through mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
