Two Cambodian wildlife officials were among eight people charged Wednesday with running an international monkey smuggling ring that shipped primates to the U.S. that were poached from the wild and falsely labeled as coming from breeding facilities, federal prosecutors said. Cambodian wildlife officials were paid to help transport the monkeys to the facilities, including the Vanny Bio Research center in Cambodia, the indictment says. One of the Cambodian wildlife officials, Masphal Kry, 46, was arrested Wednesday at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City. According to federal prosecutors in Miami, he personally transported the monkeys to the Cambodian facilities and received payments from the other members of the alleged smuggling ring between December 2017 and this September. “The allegations are alarming — the plundering of wild populations of long-tailed macaques and falsely labeling them as captive-bred in order to bypass regulations,” Kite said.
Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert is in a closer-than-expected race against Democrat Adam Frisch. Her Colorado district backed Trump by less than 10 points in 2020, unlike other hard-right Republicans. Boebert's district is more ideologically heterodox. "But within there, there's ski communities, there's traditional ranching communities, there's mining communities, there's industrial communities." Frisch also benefited from the endorsement and backing of GOP state Sen. Don Coram, who represented a far-southwest Colorado district and unsuccessfully challenged Boebert for the GOP nomination this year.
Operating income fell 91% to $83 million mostly due to higher than expected losses from the Direct-to-Consumer business. In better news, Disney ended Q4 with 164.2 million Disney+ subscribers, up 12.1 million from the prior quarter and well above estimates of about 160.45 million. Bundling has a negative effect on ARPUs, and Disney said Tuesday evening that bundled and multiproduct offerings now make up over 40% of domestic Disney+ subscribers. In terms of subscribers, Disney sees core Disney+ subscribers slightly increasing in its first quarter, though Disney+ Hotstar is expected to lose subs due to the absence of the Indian Premier League Cricket rights. After checking consensus estimates, this is a terrible miss compared to expectations of sales growing by 11% and operating income increasing by 17%.
CNN —Hundreds of elephants, wildebeests, and zebras have died across Kenya amid the nation’s longest drought in decades. “The Kenya Wildlife Service Rangers, Community Scouts, and Research Teams counted the deaths of 205 elephants, 512 wildebeests, 381 common zebras, 51 buffalos, 49 Grevy’s zebras, and 12 giraffes in the past nine months,” a report released Friday by the country’s Ministry of Tourism said. NAIROBI, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Drought in Kenya killed 205 elephants and scores of other wildlife between February and October as much of East Africa endures its worst drought in 40 years, tourism minister Peninah Malonza said on Friday. Although sporadic rainfall has finally started in the region, Kenya's Meteorological Department is forecasting below-average rainfall for much of the country for the coming months, raising fears that the threat to Kenya's wildlife is not over. There have also been 49 deaths of the rare and endangered Grevy's zebra. In September, conservation group Grevy's Zebra Trust said that 40 Grevy's had died in just a three-month period because of the drought, representing nearly 2% of the species population. Last month, charity Save the Elephants said that one famed calf, well-known for being a twin, a rarity for elephants, died during the drought.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.

They earned loyalty points at Marriott hotels, where Ms. DiMarco would take Zoom calls in the morning before heading out to hike in national parks. “She had already been nomadic, and she wanted a stable place,” Ms. Beniamino said. Ms. DiMarco began looking at apartments in early 2022.

A National Park Service dive team carried out a full search the next day and confirmed a finding of skeletal remains, the spokesperson said. Founder Chris Krolow runs a marketplace for buying, selling, and renting private islands. More than 20 years later, Krolow is now an island expert and the owner and operator of Private Islands Inc., a marketplace for renting and selling islands around the world. From tour guide to island salesmanSapodilla Private Island, one of the properties Krolow owns with his business partner, David Keener. He'd stumbled on a smart formula: Marketing a private island individually is expensive, as the audience for rentals or sales is small and dispersed. People aren't just crazy about renting islands, but they'll pay a premium to own one," he said.
South Dakota ranked above Hawaii and Illinois for most relaxed, analysts from Diamond Rehab Thailand say. South Dakota claimed the number one spot, beating out the likes of Hawaii and Alaska. A March report from WalletHub ranked the state 48th in its list of most-to-least stressed states based on work, money, family, and health-related stress. According to the survey, people in South Dakota rank second only to Minnesota in the average number of hours they sleep each night. However, the state ranked in the top five for the average hours worked per week.
Bedrock's seafloor-mapping technologies have the potential to spur offshore wind developments. In spring 2021, the Biden administration set a lofty goal of producing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. Baldwin said Ørsted had a dedicated team of more than 100 people to interpret marine data for the company's offshore wind developments. Bedrock's goal is to make the seafloor process up to 10 times as fast as current methods, DiMare told Emerging Tech Brew. "I'm hoping that we get that seafloor map so that we can make wise decisions about where to put our resilience infrastructure, our wind farms," she said.
An animal voyage is special because it requires us to make many journeys all at once. To return home from an animal voyage is to become, yourself, a new animal living in your old habitat. “If the snow leopard should manifest itself, then I am ready to see the snow leopard,” Matthiessen writes. The best trips, like Peter Matthiessen’s search for the snow leopard, find a way to make themselves permanent. The series was produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
Those of us who’ve had to squeeze our way through crowds at national parks recently can attest how hugely — and annoyingly — popular the parks have become. The pandemic turned a Klieg light on nature’s allure, so much so that 44 parks set visitation records in 2021, according to the National Park Service. And, given the upward trajectory of 2021’s visitation numbers, it’s safe to say greater numbers are likely to be seen in many parks this year. But even the most popular parks have hidden gems and entrances that aren’t clogged with traffic. Packing a little patience, along with water, snacks and sunscreen, will go a long way.
