[1/3] US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen speaks during her meeting with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng (out of frame) at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on July 8, 2023. Yellen said nothing publicly to indicate that the U.S. was poised to ease tariffs, but commentators in China were hopeful, amid a U.S. Trade Representative review. "While U.S might continue its technological curbs on China, a reduction or exemption of non-core tariffs against China is possible." Yellen last year advocated eliminating some duties on "non-strategic" goods as a way to ease some specific costs amid high inflation. Haley has said she would push Congress to revoke China’s trade status until China curbs its alleged role in the fentanyl trade.

“NAFO” stands for the North Atlantic Fellas Organization and is a decentralized online volunteer organization that is waging its own social media war against Russia and its invasion of Ukraine. Over the weekend, the group held its own summit in Lithuania’s capital, which was opened by the country’s foreign minister. A cartoon Shiba Inu, wearing the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine's flag, pops up behind Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in a video she shared on Twitter. Some fellas are Ukrainian soldiers, who are fighting on the front lines and provide pictures from the battlefield, mocking the incompetence of the Russian military or praising Ukrainian bravery. A Subway store in Georgia had to remove a roadside sign that said "our subs dont implode." Subway said it had told the franchisee "that this kind of comment has no place in our business." Subway didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside of normal working hours. During a trip to view the wreck of the Titanic on June 18, the Titan, the submersible, lost communication with its mothership. Alef Aeronautics' electric flying car just won federal approval for test flightsAlef Aeronautics' Model A. Alef AeronauticsThe Californian automaker said last week that it had received a Special Airworthiness Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for its Model A flying car, which it said marked the first time such a vehicle has received legal approval to fly from the US Government. Because the FAA is currently developing policies for electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, the certificate limits the locations and purpose for which the car is permitted to fly. Alef said in a press release in October that it had been test-driving and -flying a full-size prototype since 2019. Mock-up images released by Alef show what the vehicle could be like.

But what GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham was subjected to at former President Donald Trump’s rally Saturday in Graham’s home state of South Carolina was far worse than I ever personally witnessed. However, Graham soon began to grasp that a large segment of this Trump crowd — some of whom were yelling “traitor” — was not kidding around. Later when Trump took the podium, he needled Graham, saying, “You know you can make mistakes on occasion,” adding, “Even Lindsey down here, Sen. Lindsey Graham.” When the crowd began to boo again, Trump “half-heartedly defended“ Graham, according to The Greenville (South Carolina) News. When Trump declared that everyone makes a “mistake,” including Graham, it appeared that the mistake was not being fully loyal to Trump. Trump supporters boo and heckle Graham during Saturday's campaign event for the former president in the senator's home state of South Carolina.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —Raising a child in South Korea is no easy task. As a result, the hagwon industry in South Korea is massive, and profitable. Of the nearly 60,000 middle and high school students surveyed nationwide, almost a quarter of males and one in three females reported experiencing depression. Activists say South Korea needs deeper change instead, such as dismantling entrenched gender norms and introducing more support for working parents. Some agreed the private education sector needed reform, but doubted the effectiveness of this move.

I know that time travelers may have sunk the Titanic by visiting it in excessive numbers. By now you can see that “The Theory of Everything Else” is all over the map. Its broadness is mainly an asset — it makes the book suitable for beach reading or for mainlining before a dinner party. Schreiber brings a formidable amount of research to bear, and he’s careful never to mock any of his subjects, even those who may deserve it. But he’s sometimes too adept at quarantining the weirdness, too certain of where the rational ends and the irrational begins.

Elly De La Cruz was relaxing with a group of teammates in the visitors’ clubhouse at Camden Yards on Monday when news broke that he had been named the National League Player of the Week after only his 17th game in the big leagues. “What took you so long?” one of his teammates asked. “Yeah,” another added, “Matt did it in his first week.”The mock impatience, and comparisons to Matt McLain, his teammate and fellow rookie, underscored just how promising the Cincinnati Reds’ future — and their present — appear to be. McLain, a 23-year-old infielder, had won the same honor as De La Cruz at the end of May after only his first full week of play. De La Cruz, 21, arrived 22 days later, and it took him less than three weeks to be named the best player in his league — at least for a week.

Hunter Hudson, 23, a filmmaker in San Antonio, said he originally designed and created the shirts for him and his friends to “roll up to the Barbenheimer double feature” on July 21. But when he posted pictures of the shirt on his Twitter feed, he said, it took off beyond his expectations. But after sharing a few mock-ups of the shirt, he woke up one morning to hundreds of messages from people asking him if they could buy it. So far he said he had made about 150 shirts, with a second batch of about 70 more on the way. “I had a couple of movie theaters reach out to me privately to do bulk orders for employees,” he said.

"The crews of the Su-27 (fighter jets) of the Baltic Fleet fired from airborne weapons at cruise missiles and mock enemy aircraft," the ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. "The main goal of the exercise is to test the readiness of the flight crew to perform combat and special tasks as intended." Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin speaks in this screengrab from a video released on June 24. The Western stakes in the Ukraine war rose significantly as a result. A mutinous weekend that saw mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin flagrantly mock the Kremlin before aborting his march on Moscow evoked Russia’s blood-soaked history of revolutions and coups. The Kremlin strongman seemed to blink at a military confrontation with Prigozhin’s Wagner Group fighters — in an act that might preserve his grip on power. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival.

CNN —The world just got a hint of a tantalizing but possibly even more dangerous future without Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Western stakes in the Ukraine war rose significantly as a result. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival. This would be good news for the West, which has bankrolled and armed the country’s fight for its life. After this weekend, this new reality will require the West to once again examine its balancing act to save Ukraine.

CNN —The weekend’s events in Russia seem an almost surreal interruption to the long slog of conflict unfolding in neighboring Ukraine. Yevgeny Prigozhin’s challenge to the Russian state erupted and receded in the space of 24 hours, but the consequences of his short-lived mutiny may reverberate for much longer. Prigozhin’s Wagner forces, for all his boasting, were never going to be a match for the Russian security forces. And yet, the saga was humiliating to the Russian military and at least embarrassing to the Kremlin. One Ukrainian military officer was provocatively shown on social media eating popcorn as he watched events in Russia unfold.

Companies Volkswagen AG FollowBERLIN, June 16 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) will hold a series of capital markets days to present the results of mock listing exercises at each of its brand groups and its software and battery units, according to two sources familiar with the matter. At its capital markets day next Wednesday, the company will present an overview of the group's targets in the next 3-4 years, the sources said on Friday, declining to be named. But the sources said the results will instead be staggered over a series of events focused on the brand groups, software unit and battery unit held over a longer period of time. Executives have repeatedly emphasised that the mock exercises will not necessarily lead to actual listings, though the carmaker is speaking to outside investors about its battery unit PowerCo and has said a listing is a possibility. I promise there are some simple and immensely helpful ways in which LGBTQ people and allies can take action in June and every month. Don Arnold/Getty ImagesIf you don’t know where to begin with lobbying, look to an LGBTQ or civil rights group doing the hard work on the ground. Commit to learning and teaching: Even members and strong allies of the LGBTQ community can benefit from fresh learning. After all, the LGBTQ community is anything but a monolith — there are so many diverse forms of representation and a landscape that is quickly evolving.
