2 Senate Republican John Thune told reporters that Johnson's plan has "a lot" of support among Republicans in the Senate, adding: "It'd be strong." The Republican-controlled House passed HR-2 in May, but the bill has gone nowhere in the Democratic-led Senate. Among other things, the Senate Republican proposal would resume construction of a border wall -- former President Donald Trump's signature goal -- in addition to deeming large numbers of migrants ineligible for asylum. Republican border provisions face broad opposition from Democrats in Congress and from President Joe Biden. He told reporters that a bill linking Ukraine aid to border security would come soon.

For nearly a decade, the sensational killing of a prominent Florida law professor in 2014 centered on a single, sordid question: Did his ex-wife’s family, motivated by an ugly custody dispute, hire hit men to murder him? On Monday, a jury concluded that it did, and convicted Charles Adelson, the former brother-in-law of the slain professor, Dan Markel, of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder. Mr. Adelson closed his eyes, mouthed “No” and put his head down when the verdict was read at the Leon County Courthouse in Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Markel, 41, a well-known legal scholar at Florida State University, was shot on July 18, 2014, in his home in an upscale Tallahassee neighborhood. The police found him wounded, and he died 14 hours later at a hospital.

Prosecutors contend Charles Adelson paid to have Dan Markel killed after Adelson's sister, Wendi, lost a bitter custody battle. Adelson said he didn't think Magbanua was orchestrating the extortion and was convinced she was protecting him from the killers. A judge ruled that Wendi Adelson couldn’t move the children from Tallahassee, and Markel refused to move to South Florida. He told Magbanua details of the proposal and the contentious custody battle, and she later told Garcia. It wasn't until three years later when she was on trial that he realized Magbanua was part of the plot, he told Cappleman.

Musk filed the objections in San Francisco federal court, where the SEC sued him on Oct. 5 to make him testify for the probe, which it launched in April 2022. Musk has given the SEC documents relating to the probe and provided testimony in July last year via video conference, the SEC said in a court filing. The SEC has spent 18 months "devoting its formidable resources to investigating Mr. Musk over an allegedly untimely filing," the court filings said. Step back far enough, and you can see exactly what is driving so much geopolitics today: Ukraine is trying to join the West. Or they would have agreed to Lend-Lease assistance for the allies only if President Franklin Roosevelt would eliminate the I.R.S. That’s why today America must help Israel and Ukraine to blunt the Russia-Iran axis in their theaters. But the morning after their wars, Israel and Ukraine are going to have to face some very hard choices. Because while we may write big checks to both today, they will not be blank checks.

Billionaire Marc Rowan has been in touch with what one finance executive quipped was "half of Wall Street" about halting donations to some of the country's most prestigious universities, to protest the schools' responses to the Israel-Hamas war. The CEO of private equity giant Apollo Global Management belongs to a growing group of Wall Street executives speaking privately with fellow financiers about how to use their influence as major donors to pressure schools into making leadership changes. Rowan took part in a Zoom call Oct. 23 with dozens of wealthy donors to other Ivy League schools, including Yale University and Harvard University, according to those familiar with the call. One of the things they discussed was pausing their financial support for the schools, these people explained. Rowan was one of the final speakers on the call, where he raised his own issues about the school, this person explained.

The UK Government are hosting the AI Safety Summit bringing together international governments, leading AI companies, civil society groups and experts in research to consider the risks of AI, especially at the frontier of development, and discuss how they can be mitigated through internationally coordinated action. His comments were delivered at the U.K.'s AI safety summit, which officially kicked off Wednesday at Bletchley Park, England. Wu Zhaohui, China's vice minister of science and technology, said the country was willing to "enhance dialogue and communication in AI safety with all sides." That has placed significant pressure on China's generative AI developers, many of which rely on Nvidia's chips. Raimondo also said the U.S. would look to launch an AI safety institute, hot on the heels of the U.K announcing its own intentions for a similar initiative last week.

Directed energy weapons are defined as those that use high amounts of concentrated energy, usually laser or microwave, that are directed at targets to destroy or damage them. A UK Dragonfire laser directed energy weapon system is seen on day one of the DSEI arms fair at ExCel on September 10, 2019 in London, England. "The US military has tested a variety of DEW (directed energy weapon) prototypes since 2014, primarily for counter-drone missions," it said.

"Consequently, the Serbia-Kosovo discord, while festering, finds itself languishing in the shadow of these more immediate and globally resonant challenges." It highlights a major challenge for policymakers: providing ongoing conflicts with near-constant attention, while still monitoring other strategically significant risks. "The fact remains that the Balkan region is a powder keg, where even minor incidents can swiftly spiral into broader conflicts. History has underscored the adage that what happens in the Balkans, doesn't stay in the Balkans," the CEPA's Hartwell said. "The U.S., EU and U.K. do not have the diplomatic and military bandwidth to respond to several conflicts of strategic interest.

December Brent crude futures , set to expire on Tuesday, rose 36 cents, or 0.41%, to stand at $87.81 a barrel by 0305 GMT. "If this evolves into a full-scale invasion and there is involvement from Iran, tighter supply worries could resurface." In a note, ING analysts said, "Disruptions to Iranian oil flows remain the most obvious risk to the market." Such lost supply could range between 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) and 1 million bpd if the United States strictly enforces sanctions once again, they added, although Middle East developments had yet to affect oil supply. Weaker-than-expected manufacturing and non-manufacturing activity data from China stoked fears of slowing fuel demand from the world's No.

New York CNN —Leon Cooperman, the hedge fund billionaire who has famously clashed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren over her proposed wealth tax, is cautioning voters against returning Donald Trump to the White House. “It would be terrible for the country if Donald Trump were reelected,” Cooperman told CNN in a phone interview late last week. “He’s a divisive human being who belongs in jail.”It’s rare for a Wall Street figure to make such critical comments about Trump, at least publicly. The Biden campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Given the ongoing risks, Cooperman argued the stock market is overvalued relative to corporate profits.

One of the first things you notice when entering the Hess Tower in downtown Houston is the original forest-green truck that Leon Hess drove around New Jersey nearly a century ago to deliver fuel. Now, the Hess name is set to disappear from the ranks of the world’s prominent oil companies. Chevron on Monday said it would acquire the family company for $53 billion, concluding a 90-year saga bookended by the gruff founding father and his gregarious son, current Chief Executive John Hess .

Samantha Slater, a Columbia University spokesperson, declined to comment on whether the university plans to take disciplinary action against Massad. “Columbia is grateful to Mr. Cooperman for his years of generosity and service to Columbia Business School,” Slater said in a statement to CNN.

The arrest of Florida resident Le’Keian Woods on Sept. 29 has sparked online narratives regarding his treatment at the hands of officers of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Bystander footage of the arrest first circulated online with some users saying Woods, who is Black, suffered a disproportionately brutal arrest by white officers for a seatbelt violation, while others suggested the arrest was warranted because drugs were found in the vehicle with Woods. A graphic mugshot released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) shows Woods with swollen eyes as well as a bloody, bruised face. JSO had no comment on Oct. 26 when asked whether the detectives involved in the arrest were still working. BODYCAM FOOTAGEBody-worn camera footage of the detectives involved released by the JSO, which begins after the vehicle stopped, shows Woods fleeing the vehicle.
