Some people think asking questions — to friends, peers or bosses — can make you look weak or insecure. But the simple act can actually help you garner influence and even get the people around to you change their minds, says communication expert Matt Abrahams — if you know the right questions to ask. "Asking a question puts you in a position of power," Abrahams, a Stanford University lecturer, tells CNBC Make It. Asking good questions "demonstrates you care, it demonstrates empathy, it demonstrates you're willing to learn and, in some cases, admit you don't know everything," he adds. Here's how to ask the right questions, at work, home and in your social life, to get ahead and strengthen relationships, he says.

How to make the Fed rate cut work for you

In its August survey of car shoppers, a majority (64%) said a Fed rate cut likely would affect the timing of their purchase. But here’s the thing: Car loan rates are pretty high — the average is 7.1% for new cars and 11.3% for used cars, according to Edmunds. If you do buy a home this year and are considering buying down points to reduce your mortgage rate, crunch some numbers first, Diodato advised. That’s because you will pay thousands of dollars to buy down your mortgage rate now, and then thousands more in fees to refinance. What to do if you’re not near retirement: Reconsider how much money you’re keeping in cash or cash-equivalent investments.

Oil prices steady, with investors focusing on Fed decision

Oil prices steadied on Wednesday, after rising in the previous two sessions, as investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve's anticipated interest rate cut, with the potential for more violence in the Middle East supporting the market. "Markets have calmed down as concerns over hurricane damage and escalating tensions in the Middle East have been factored in," said Mitsuru Muraishi, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities. "Now, investors are focusing on the Fed's rate cuts which could revitalize U.S. fuel demand and weaken the dollar," he said, predicting that oil prices are likely to maintain a bullish tone after Brent hit its lowest since 2021 last week. Traders kept bets the Fed will start an expected series of interest rate cuts with a half-percentage-point move downward on Wednesday, an expectation that may itself put pressure on central bankers to deliver just that. Oil stockpiles rose by 1.96 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 13, according to market sources citing the API figures, but gasoline and distillate stocks both rose by about 2.3 million barrels.

Traders and investors are debating if the Federal Reserve will cut 25 basis points or 50 basis points when the decision comes at 2pm eastern time. "25 or 50 (basis points), we see a credible case for either. "The Fed is likely to adjust policy by 200 to 250 basis points over the coming year. Garewal also said this rate cut was part of a "normalization" cycle and shared research that yields on the 2-year fall 65 basis points on average after a first Fed cut.

It’s also a sign of confidence from Fed officials that inflation has come under control just enough to comfortably dial back policy. Typically, in the lead-up to a Fed policy decision, Wall Street and economists are in alignment on what to expect. But investors’ wagers for a half-point cut ramped up on Monday; and as of Tuesday afternoon, federal funds futures contracts were pricing in a 63% chance of a jumbo rate cut, up from around 30% on Thursday, according to the CME Group. As inflation skyrocketed in 2021 and 2022, American employers pumped out jobs and the unemployment rate declined to half-century lows. The Fed eventually responded to the country’s inflation problem with its bitter medicine of high interest rates.

Cheaper Mortgages and Car Loans: Lower Rates Are on the HorizonThe costs of 30-year mortgages and new car loans have been inching down in recent months, welcome news for borrowers who have endured years of high prices and high interest rates. When the Fed lowers its benchmark rate, it is ultimately trying to reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. Read more about what lower interest rates could mean for five areas of your financial life. That has raised questions about whether the Fed waited too long to begin lowering rates. Wall Street got the big rate cut it wanted, but markets failed to sustain a rally. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut its key overnight lending rate by a half percentage point . Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, noted that the half-point cut suggests slowing growth is increasingly concerning Fed policy makers. "The Fed is likely worried that labor demand would weaken more, causing additional stress points in the labor market." "A larger cut probably was not needed out of the gate, but that should support risk-on asset allocation."

Ben Higgins tried to parlay his Bachelor success into a political career, but the campaign didn't last long. The focus on Bachelor Nation also makes sense given the franchise's viewership is dominated by one of the most crucial swing votes of recent elections: white women. In the past two presidential elections, white women were the most closely split demographic subgroup tracked by major exit polls. In 2016, Donald Trump won over 52% of white women against Hillary Clinton's 43%, exit polls found, while Trump bested Joe Biden in 2020 among white women 55% to 44%. The overlap between the swingiest demographic and the "Bachelor" audience suggests Bachelor Nation has value to those who seek to lead our nation.

In all, the dot plot shows the benchmark rate coming down about 2 percentage points beyond Wednesday's move. On core inflation, the committee took down its projection to 2.6%, a 0.2 percentage point reduction from June. A top election official in Arizona said he would file a suit Tuesday that could bar almost 100,000 residents from voting in state and local races this fall, claiming they have not provided citizenship documents required under state law. The planned suit from Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer is related to a specific part of Arizona election law that requires residents to provide documents that prove citizenship to vote in state and local elections. Such documents are not required for Arizona residents to register to vote or cast a ballot in federal elections. Since 1996, Arizona has required residents to provide proof of citizenship to obtain a driver’s license. Hobbs said her office would implement "an independent audit to ensure that MVD systems are functioning as necessary to support voter registration."
