Trump’s defense secretary who preceded Esper, James Mattis, had already turned full throttle against Trump before the 2020 election. He opposes Trump’s prosecution in New York by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, for alleged participation in a hush money scheme before the 2016 election. He also questions whether Trump should be prosecuted in connection with January 6, 2021, or his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Any ultimate prosecution with regard to the 2020 election could be a mistake, Barr said, arguing a candidate should have First Amendment rights. There’s an even larger questionRepublicans can defend Trump against prosecution all they want, but for Barr, that’s not the point.

Washington CNN —Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said Sunday it was a “useless idea” to force 2024 GOP contenders to sign a pledge to back the party’s ultimate nominee in order to participate in primary debates. “It’s only in the era of Donald Trump that you need somebody to sign something on a pledge. Trump, as a candidate in 2015, did not rule out an independent run for president at a debate in Cleveland. He ultimately signed a pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee and to not run as a third-party candidate if he did not win the GOP nomination. The RNC announced earlier this month that the first presidential primary debate will take place on August 23 in Milwaukee.

New York CNN Business —Many top business leaders are seriously worried that artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity in the not-too-distant future. Forty-two percent of CEOs surveyed at the Yale CEO Summit this week say AI has the potential to destroy humanity five to ten years from now, according to survey results shared exclusively with CNN. The business leaders displayed a sharp divide over just how dangerous AI is to civilization. While 34% of CEOs said AI could potentially destroy humanity in ten years and 8% said that could happen in five years, 58% said that could never happen and they are “not worried.”In a separate question, Yale found that 42% of the CEOs surveyed say the potential catastrophe of AI is overstated, while 58% say it is not overstated. The CEOs indicated AI will have the most transformative impact in three key industries: healthcare (48%), professional services/IT (35%) and media/digital (11%).

Noah Gray, CNN’s senior coordinating producer for special events, had grown up in the Miami area and attended Palmetto Senior High School. The remarkable effort to report on the court proceeding was only necessary because of the archaic system in which U.S. federal courts operate. The public continues to have remarkably little access to proceedings in federal courts — no matter how consequential or extraordinary the case may be. Generally speaking, federal courts refuse to budge. “I think the benefits for public access cut for both Trump and the prosecution,” Katyal told Nicolle Wallace.

For the first time in history, the nation is seeking to put on criminal trial a person who was elected to lead it as president. His indictment, brimming with details on Trump’s disastrously lax handling of classified materials, shocked many government veterans. (The DOJ has closed its investigation into Pence, while the special counsel probe of Biden’s handling of classified documents is ongoing.) “If this indictment is true, if what it says is actually the case, President Trump was incredibly reckless with our national security,” Haley said on Fox News. Typically, federal ranking officials are highly protective of classified material, knowing that even a lapse in the handling of one document could get them in trouble with the law, or land them in jail.

At the North Carolina State GOP Convention on Saturday, on his first campaign swing since news of the federal indictment, Trump escalated his assault on America’s system of justice. They’re trying to win the classified documents case in a court of public opinion – in a way that may influence a future jury – long before the ex-president faces a trial. Not to mention, the law does not require documents to be classified for a crime to have been committed. And many Democrats blamed ex-FBI Chief James Comey’s public statements in the case days before the 2016 election for helping to elect Trump. “(What) the Democrats are doing to Trump, it’s just too – it has nothing to do with running the country,” she said.

Trump hits campaign trail as indictment roils 2024 race

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is set to return to the campaign trail Saturday, traveling to Georgia and North Carolina for speeches at a pair of state Republican conventions as news of his federal indictment roils the party’s 2024 presidential race. The pre-planned stops come the day after the Justice Department unsealed its indictment laying out the government’s case that Trump and aide Walt Nauta mishandled classified national security documents. The visits will give Trump a chance to respond to the charges in a campaign-style as he mounts battles on both the political and legal fronts. So far, Trump has cast his prosecution as a politically motivated effort to stop his bid for the presidency. In March, the Manhattan district attorney in New York indicted Trump on charges related to hush-money payments to a former adult star.

Chris Christie, once a Donald Trump ally, called the facts of the federal indictment "devastating." Christie is one of two 2024 GOP rivals not to defend Trump following these new allegations. On Friday evening, Christie was one of two rivals not to defend Trump over the 37-count indictment against the former president. During the 2016 primaries, Christie dropped out and roughly two weeks later endorsed then-candidate Trump — the first GOP governor to do so — ahead of Super Tuesday. Christie is now running against Trump in the 2024 GOP primary.

A trio of longtime executives have taken charge at CNN following the exit of Chris Licht. There's a moment in Tim Alberta's brutal profile of CNN's now-former CEO Chris Licht where Licht awkwardly takes a jab at his predecessor Jeff Zucker. Discovery CEO David Zaslav emailed staff, letting them know Licht was stepping down. On the programming side, Licht launched "CNN This Morning," with anchors Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow, and Kaitlan Collins. "It's another shit show" on top of Licht's multiplying challenges at CNN, one former employee told Insider at the time. "Having people applaud those sexual abuse comments definitely made me question my allegiance to this network," one network executive told Insider. CNN's own media reporter Oliver Darcy said Licht had "lost the room," adding that dozens of CNN staffers no longer had confidence in their leader.

CNN —Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday he was “wrong” about former President Donald Trump, whom he twice supported and advised ahead of the 2020 election. Christie told Tapper that 2024 is a different atmosphere from 2016, when Christie first ran against Trump and Trump cruised to the nomination by splitting a crowded field. This time, Christie argued, Trump has a political record to run against. Reacting to a Trump video mocking his weight, Christie said, “It just renewed in my own mind what a child he is.

Takeaways From Nikki Haley’s Mild CNN Town Hall

Compared with CNN’s explosive, much-criticized town-hall-style event with Mr. Trump last month, this one was a throwback to earlier, less combative times. Jake Tapper, the anchor who moderated, never found the need to correct Ms. Haley. The two big red elephants in the room, Mr. Trump and Gov. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, who once supported similar changes, now say they won’t touch the programs. But she displayed less of the punitive rhetoric on the issues that Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have made crucial to their messages.

Could Jeff Zucker Fix CNN? He Seems to Think So.

The complaint wasn’t unusual for Mr. Zucker, 58. He often compares notes on the media business with former colleagues and industry acquaintances, many of whom call him to grouse about the current state of CNN. Mr. Zucker’s criticism may be painful for executives running CNN to hear second- and thirdhand. Last month, CNN hosted a town hall with Mr. Trump in New Hampshire that was criticized for airing false information. Many anchors Mr. Zucker hired or promoted, including Jake Tapper, and Kaitlan Collins, who moderated the town hall, are still in prominent spots in CNN’s lineup.

After a weekend of acrimony between negotiators for House Republicans and the White House, Biden will meet House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Monday for critical talks on pulling the economy back from the precipice. Biden and McCarthy to meet MondayThe rhetoric eased a little, however, after Biden and McCarthy spoke as the president flew home on Air Force One. McCarthy already passed a bill raising the debt ceiling in exchange for a wish list of Republican demands. This is a balance of power that ought to drive both sides towards a compromise, but extremist elements in the House GOP could make that impossible. Like McCarthy, Biden also faces political pressure within his own party after some progressive Democrats expressed fears he would offer the speaker too much in any deal.
