CNN —Two more tourists have been caught apparently defacing the Colosseum in Rome, following a similar incident in June. The very next day, a 17-year-old student from Germany was caught allegedly doing something similar. This is the same punishment potentially faced by a 27-year-old British tourist who was filmed apparently carving his name into the wall of the ancient arena last month. Dimitrov allegedly scratched “Ivan+Hayley 23” into the wall of the Colosseum, representing his and his girlfriend’s names. A similar incident also occurred in 2020, when security staff spotted an Irish tourist allegedly carving his initials into the ancient structure and reported him to the police.

Paris/London CNN —France is to introduce a scheme that will subsidize repairs to clothing and shoes in order to cut waste and planet-heating pollution from the textile industry. “What I hope is that the French will become aware of what we can see, that is the impact of the textile industry across the world today,” she said. Tailors, clothes brands and repair shops can join the initiative for free via Refashion, which will collect a small “eco-contribution” on sales to cover the subsidy. Refashion will then arrange for the companies signed up to the scheme to be refunded within 15 days. The scheme follows a similar French initiative for white goods such as fridges and washing machines.

CNN —The color of the ocean has changed significantly over the last 20 years and human-caused climate change is likely responsible, according to a new study. They analyzed color variation data from 2002 to 2022 and then used climate change models to simulate what would happen to the oceans both with additional planet-heating pollution and without. The color changes matched almost exactly what Dutkiewicz predicted would happen if greenhouse gases were added to the atmosphere – that around 50% of our oceans would change color. Dutkiewicz, who has been running simulations that showed the oceans were going to change color for years, said she is not surprised at this finding. Dutkiewicz told CNN it was difficult to say whether color changes could become visible to humans if the process continues.

CNN —Taking daytime naps may help maintain brain health as we age, according to a new study. The results show “a small but significant increase in brain volume in people who have a genetic signature associated with taking daytime naps,” she told the Science Media Centre. “Even with those limitations, this study is interesting because it adds to the data indicating that sleep is important for brain health,” she said. MoMo Productions/Digital Vision/Getty ImagesHowever, such a technique can only show an association between nap and brain health, not cause and effect. CNN —A new species of dinosaur with blade-like spikes for armor has been discovered on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. Named Vectipelta barretti, it is the first armored dinosaur, or ankylosaur, to have been found on the island in 142 years, according to a statement from London’s Natural History Museum, where several of the researchers who discovered the dinosaur work. The paper is published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, and the team believe more new species will be discovered on the Isle of Wight, an important source of dinosaur fossils, in the future. In June 2022, scientists identified the remains of a spinosaurid, a predatory dinosaur with two legs and a crocodile-like face, on the island.
