House Republicans are offering competing demands for whoever wants to be the next speaker. AP Photo/Carolyn KasterBefore this week, no House speaker had ever been removed by the so-called "motion to vacate." His successor and House Republicans as a whole must now determine its future. Republicans vote amongst themselves — likely next week — behind closed doors for who should be the next speaker. Traditionally, Republicans would then vote for this candidate in the public vote on the House floor.

Former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani speaks to reporters as he leaves his apartment building in New York, Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023. WASHINGTON — Rudy Giuliani sued President Joe Biden for defamation Wednesday, saying he lost clients and podcast listeners after Biden called him a "Russian pawn" during an October 2020 debate with then-President Donald Trump. His suit against Biden comes a week after the president's son, Hunter Biden, sued Giuliani for alleged violations of computer fraud and data access. Weeks before the 2020 election, Giuliani gave The New York Post a purported copy of Hunter's laptop computer. "Nobody believes it except ... his good friend Rudy Giuliani."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prosecutors who filed firearms charges against Hunter Biden moved Wednesday to formally dismiss a gun count that had been part of a collapsed plea deal. No new tax counts have yet been filed by special counsel David Weiss, who is overseeing the case. Hunter Biden had been expected to avoid prosecution on the gun charge and plead guilty to misdemeanor tax counts in an agreement with prosecutors. But the deal collapsed after a judge raised questions about it in a July hearing and the new indictment was filed weeks later. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday as the case moves toward a potential trial with the 2024 election looming.

Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Delaware federal court to criminal charges related to having a handgun while being a drug user. Hunter Biden, 53, was indicted last month on three firearms counts. Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs federal court after a plea hearing on two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S. July 26, 2023. The indictment was secured in September by Special Counsel David Weiss after a plea agreement between Hunter Biden and prosecutors collapsed in August. Many Republican lawmakers who have relentlessly criticized Hunter Biden lauded the Bruen decision. Cases now being litigated will help determine how far the Bruen ruling lets courts go in invalidating gun laws. Even if Hunter Biden gets the possession charge dismissed, there is still the matter of the two counts accusing him of false statements on the background check form.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Merrick Garland said in an interview that aired Sunday that he would resign if asked by President Joe Biden to take action against Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump. They don’t allow partisan considerations to play any role in their determinations,” Garland said. Garland choked up when talking about his concerns over violence, particularly as judges and prosecutors assigned to the Trump cases got death threats. But the one thing they may not do is use violence and threats of violence to alter the outcome,” he said. They must ensure that they treat each other with civility and kindness, listen to opposing views, argue as vociferously as they want, but refrain from violence and threats of violence.

Law enforcement investigations and criminal prosecutions will continue “without interruption,” the plan says, and prisons will remain staffed. Special counsels are instead funded by “the permanent, indefinite appropriation for independent counsels,” according to their expenditure reports. Civil litigation in lower federal courts will be “curtailed or postponed,” according to the Justice Department contingency plan. A shutdown also could affect state and local efforts to address violent crime, Monaco said. During a hearing on Capitol Hill last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that a shutdown would “certainly disrupt” programs like “our grant programs to state and local law enforcement.”

Kevin Dietsch/Getty ImagesHouse Republicans are taking their next official steps in their impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden by preparing a hearing and subpoenas to members of the Biden family, as well as scheduling the first hearing in the investigation for September 28. A committee spokesperson told CNN that the hearing will focus on the constitutional and legal questions Republicans are raising about Biden. “It’s an informative hearing where we’re going to have some experts in different areas of the law that can answer questions pertaining to specific crimes, as well as to educate and inform exactly what an impeachment inquiry is, and why you do an impeachment inquiry,” Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, told CNN. The subpoenas are the first direct outreach to members of the Biden family and are expected to be for their personal and business records. Republicans have made Hunter Biden’s business dealings a central component of their impeachment inquiry, but there is no public evidence to date that the president personally received any money.

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer said that House Republicans have amassed “a mountain of evidence” showing that Biden “abused his public office for his family’s financial gain.”Yet, as has been the case since they began lobbing the sensational accusations, they offered nothing to support them. Turley added that, in his view, House Republicans passed the threshold for an impeachment inquiry into Biden’s conduct but that the evidence made public thus far lacks teeth and would, in his view, favor Biden. Thus far, no evidence has surfaced suggesting the president has accepted bribes or abused his positions in office. In at least one such cash transfer, Hunter Biden used the president’s home address in the wire form, which Republicans said on Thursday provides a critical link to the president. McCarthy gave his blessing to the impeachment inquiry earlier this month after pressure mounted from former President Donald Trump and his allies in the House.

CNN —The second 2024 Republican presidential primary debate ended just as it began: with former President Donald Trump – who hasn’t yet appeared alongside his rivals onstage – as the party’s dominant front-runner. “Tonight’s GOP debate was as boring and inconsequential as the first debate, and nothing that was said will change the dynamics of the primary contest,” Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita said in a statement. A messy first hourThe first hour of the second GOP primary debate was beset by interruptions, crosstalk and protracted squabbles between the candidates and moderators over speaking time. Further complicating the matter, some of the highest polling candidates – DeSantis and Haley – were among those least willing to dive into the muck during the first hour.

Review and Outlook: Attorney General Merrick Garland demonstrates why appointing a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden was a bad idea. Images: Reuters/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyNo member of Congress has ever had his taxpayer-funded pension stripped for corruption crimes committed while holding public office. That could change, as the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office unsealed an indictment Friday charging Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) with accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from three businessmen. Mr. Menendez said in a statement that he is the victim of a “smear campaign.” A lawyer for the senator’s wife, who was also indicted, said she denies any criminal conduct.

Hunter Biden on Tuesday sued former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, his companies, and another attorney over alleged violations of computer fraud and data access related to a laptop computer Biden is said to have left at a Delaware repair shop. "They also are among those who have been primarily responsible for the 'total annihilation' of Plaintiff's data." Giuliani delivered information allegedly gleaned from Biden's laptop to The New York Post, a right-wing newspaper, in October 2020, a month before the election between Trump and Joe Biden. The Post then published a story based on that data, which suggested that President Biden may have attended a meeting with a representative of a Ukrainian company that employed Hunter. The suit also says Biden's data was "manipulated, altered and damaged" before it was copied and sent to Giuliani and Costello.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden sued Rudy Giuliani and another attorney Tuesday, saying the two wrongly accessed and shared his personal data after obtaining it from the owner of a Delaware computer repair shop. The suit filed in California also claims Biden’s data was “manipulated, altered and damaged” before it was sent to Giuliani and Costello, and has been further altered since then. House Republicans, meanwhile, have continued to investigate every aspect of Hunter Biden's business dealings and sought to tie them to his father, the president, as part of an impeachment inquiry. Hunter Biden, meanwhile, after remaining silent as the images are splayed across the country, has changed his tactic, and his allies have signaled there's more to come. Giuliani provided the information to a reporter at the New York Post, which first wrote about the laptop, Biden's attorney said in a letter pushing for a federal investigation.

CNN —Hunter Biden filed a civil lawsuit Tuesday against Rudy Giuliani and his former attorney, claiming they caused “total annihilation” of his digital privacy and violated federal and state computer privacy laws through their alleged efforts to hack his devices. It comes as Republicans launch an impeachment inquiry into his father, President Joe Biden, that’s also examining Hunter Biden’s business dealings. Earlier this month, Hunter Biden brought a similar civil suit against former Trump White House aide Garrett Ziegler, claiming that since leaving his White House post, Ziegler “has devoted most of his waking time and energy” on the effort to access devices that purportedly belonged to Hunter Biden. And last week, Hunter Biden sued the Internal Revenue Service, alleging its agents illegally released his tax information and that the agency failed to protect his private records. The suit accuses Giuliani and Costello of breaking both federal and California state computer privacy laws and asks for a jury trial in the matter.
