NEW YORK (AP) — A month after federal officials recommended new versions of COVID-19 vaccines, 7% of U.S. adults and 2% of children have gotten a shot. The data also indicated that nearly 40% of adults said they probably or definitely will not get the shot. In the late summer, government health officials made the nation's COVID-19 vaccination campaign more like the annual flu campaign. Even so, health officials say about 18,000 hospitalization and 1,200 deaths are still being reported each week. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

One death this year and more than two dozen reports of injuries since 2018 may be tied to the supplements, FDA officials said in a statement. No probiotic products have been approved as a drug or treatment for babies, the FDA said. FDA officials in September said Evivo with MCT Oil, a probiotic made by Infinant Health of Norwalk, Connecticut, led to the death of a premature infant this year. Infinant Health officials said in statement that the firm voluntarily recalled and discontinued the product. Probiotic supplements may be used to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis, a dangerous infection affecting premature infants that inflames and kills intestinal tissue.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was removed as GOP nominee for speaker in a secret ballot after he lost his third bid. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the previous speaker, was ousted three weeks ago. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was chosen as House Republicans’ latest nominee for speaker in a conference vote late Tuesday, hours after the party elected and then derailed a different member in its search for the elusive candidate who can actually win the gavel. At the end of a marathon day of internal debate and votes, Johnson, the vice chairman of the House Republican conference, bested Byron Donalds of Florida, a Trump ally popular with many of the House’s most conservative lawmakers. In a shift, lawmakers left the Capitol on Tuesday night optimistic that Johnson could unite them after a series of failed attempts to find a successor to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), who was ousted three weeks ago.

WASHINGTON—In choosing Mike Johnson as the new House Speaker, Republicans have cast their lot with a little-known congressman from Louisiana who has made his name pushing conservative positions on cultural issues and who played a key role in unsuccessful legal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. After 22 days without a speaker, House Republicans came together to elect Johnson for the post Wednesday after three other better-known nominees failed to unite the fractured conference.

Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—The House elected GOP Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as speaker, elevating a staunch conservative to the top post after three weeks of Republican infighting doomed other candidates aiming to succeed ousted leader Kevin McCarthy. The choice of Johnson, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, came after the party cycled through a series of hopefuls, prompting some members to wonder whether any colleague could thread the needle in the deeply divided conference. With a speaker now in place, lawmakers can finally get back to work, with many eager to pass aid for Israel and address a looming government-funding deadline next month.

REUTERS/Chris Helgren/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 25 (Reuters) - U.S. oilfield technology firm Baker Hughes (BKR.O) joined rivals SLB (SLB.N) and Halliburton (HAL.N) in posting upbeat quarterly profit on Wednesday, driven by strong demand for its services and equipment in international markets. The move has benefited companies such as Baker Hughes, which provides services including drilling, well construction and completion. U.S. oil and natural gas prices have scaled back from the year-ago quarter's peak and dented some demand in North America. Baker Hughes also received contracts from several liquefied natural gas projects, as energy firms rush to build new LNG-producing facilities.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gay and bisexual men at high risk for mpox infection should get vaccinated for the virus even after the current outbreak ends, government health advisers said Wednesday. More than 30,000 U.S. mpox cases were reported last year. About 500,000 people in the U.S. have gotten the recommended two doses of the vaccine, about a quarter of the 2 million who are eligible, CDC officials said. The new recommendation may serve to remind people the virus is still out there, and that people can be infected during international travel, CDC officials said. The daily average of new U.S. cases is one to four per day, though some people likely aren't being diagnosed, CDC officials said.

Weary from weeks of fighting and embarrassing setbacks, House Republicans will meet behind closed doors to choose from among eight Republicans currently running to serve as House speaker. Lawmakers are eager to get back to work, with many wanting to pass aid to Israel and address a looming government funding deadline, neither of which can be done until a new leader is approved by the full chamber.

A New RSV Shot for Infants Is in Short Supply

NEW YORK (AP) — A new shot for infants against RSV is in short supply, and U.S. health officials told doctors they should prioritize giving the drug to babies at the highest risk of severe disease. The larger doses are for larger, heavier infants. Supply of the smaller doses also may be limited during the current RSV season, CDC officials said. The CDC said doctors should not use two smaller doses on larger infants, so as to preserve the supply of those shots. Some children may be eligible for an older RSV drug, palivizumab, agency officials said.
