More significant to the political dynamics at play, however, is how the civilian overseas vote has eclipsed military voters abroad. “As it turns out, there are more overseas civilian voters than there are military voters,” said Michael McDonald, a University of Florida political science professor. Democrats, who intervened in the case, argue that the Republican lawmakers’ request could disenfranchise “tens of thousands” of overseas voters, including those in uniform. “Our lawsuit does not in any way affect military voters’ right to vote, which is protected by federal law under UOCAVA.

Advocacy group Tax Justice Network has ranked the British Virgin Islands, followed by the Cayman Islands and Bermuda as "most complicit" in helping corporations underpay corporate income tax. Traffic_analyzer | Digitalvision Vectors | Getty ImagesBritish overseas territories are the world's top enablers of corporate tax abuse, according to a ranking by tax advocacy group Tax Justice Network. The British Virgin Islands is the territory "most complicit" in helping multinational corporations underpay corporate income tax, followed by the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, according to the latest update to TJN's Corporate Tax Haven Index earlier this month. TJN estimates that the UK and its British tax havens cost other countries an estimated $84 billion in corporate taxes annually. Defending themselves against the charges made by the advocacy group, spokespersons from some of the governments said they were in full compliance with international tax standards set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Analysts told BI it points to continued AI chip growth in the short to medium term. ASML sells large lithography machines — which print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers — to chip manufacturers, including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel. Its customers include Nvidia, the GPU designer spearheading the AI chip boom, along with AMD and Qualcomm. This makes TSMC a good bellwether for AI chip demand. While a slowdown at ASML might suggest some caution, the bigger picture still points to a continued surge in AI demand.

Katsoudas says AI adoption should start on the day-to-day level and be focused on skills training. What AI transformations are taking place at Cisco and among your workforce? From a technology perspective, at Cisco there have always been three different motions that are going on. As leaders, we're going to have a level of workforce planning insights that we've never had before because AI is going to help us with this. In technology roles, it was kind of easy because you could just send out a quick coding exercise and understand who had the capabilities.

The parents of a Massachusetts high school senior are suing his teacher, school district faculty members and a local school committee for punishments he received after he used artificial intelligence tools to research and create an outline for a history class essay. The lawsuit is one of the first of its kind in contesting school discipline over the use of AI to complete academic work. The complaint said the school’s AI policy was added to the Hingham High School student handbook only the year after the plaintiff’s son was punished. “It’s underregulated, especially in a school setting,” Peter Farrell, the family’s lawyer, said about AI in a phone interview. “AI is an output from a machine.”The student’s school district, Hingham Public Schools, said it was unable to provide further details during ongoing litigation and to respect the student’s privacy.

Harris told reporters that she "found it to be quite bizarre" when Trump said during an all-women Fox News town hall that aired Wednesday morning, "I’m the father of IVF." She argued that his appointment of Supreme Court justices who voted for Roe v. Wade to be overruled undermined his claim. Trump had made the comments on IVF during a town hall event that was taped on Tuesday but aired on Wednesday. Trump also said during the town hall that "we’re totally in favor of IVF." When reached for comment on Harris' remarks, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that Trump's comments about being "the father of IVF" were "a joke."

Early voting is getting underway throughout the country, including in key battleground states like Georgia, where more than 300,000 people voted Tuesday, the first day of early voting. However, there were substantial differences in the number of early voters based on a city or county’s partisan lean. So far in 2024, more absentee voting has occurred in places that tend to support Republicans than places that tend to lean Democratic. However, if early voters are less consistent or new voters, it could signal a shift in electoral trends ahead of November. These satellite voting locations may make early in-person voting accessible in more populous areas, which tend to be more Democratic-leaning.

An army of political propaganda accounts powered by artificial intelligence posed as real people on X to argue in favor of Republican candidates and causes, according to a research report out of Clemson University. The network identified by the Clemson researchers included at least 686 identified X accounts that have posted more than 130,000 times since January. Many of the accounts were removed from X after NBC News emailed the platform for comment. In Arizona’s Republican congressional primary, the accounts supported Blake Masters over Abraham Hamadeh. A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. He has repeatedly praised the three board members who passed the measure, saying they’re “pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.”The three members are Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares and Janelle King. Brian Kemp and the state Democratic Party. In August, the same Georgia board members passed other new rules that would allow county election board members to conduct “reasonable” inquiries before they certify results. U.S. interest rate cuts are unlikely to move at an aggressive pace, say market watchers. The Fed kicked off its easing cycle with a jumbo 50 basis-point rate cut in September — but subsequent ones will be milder, they said. Harris also stood by her early support for studying the idea of slavery reparations, which she embraced during her first presidential run in 2019. But Trump’s comments on “paper ballots” have puzzled voting experts and election officials – because almost all voters nationwide already use paper ballots.
