The plan is intended to add enough supply to prevent oil price spikes that could hurt consumers and businesses, while also assuring the nation's drillers the government will swoop into the market as a buyer if prices plunge too low. Earlier this year, Biden decided to sell 180 million barrels out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to combat a potential supply crisis brought about by sanctions on oil-rich Russia following its February invasion of Ukraine. Those will be put up for bidding for delivery in December, a senior administration official said, and extra oil could also be made available if needed. They have called on the administration to take the option off the table, a move officials are unwilling to do. "We are keeping all tools on the table, you know, anything that could potentially help ensure stable domestic supply," the official said.
Samuel Corum | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe Biden administration plans to sell oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a bid to dampen fuel prices before next month's congressional elections, three sources familiar with the matter said on Monday. President Joe Biden's announcement is expected this week as part of the response to Russia's war on Ukraine, one of the sources said. The sale would market the remaining 14 million barrels from Biden's previously announced, and largest ever, release from the reserve of 180 million barrels that started in May. Biden said last week gasoline prices are too high and that he would have more to say about lowering costs this week. The Energy Department still has about 14 million barrels of SPR oil left to sell from the historic release, because selling was slowed in July and August by holidays and hot weather.
Trump last week said Bush stored presidential records in a former Chinese restaurant/bowling alley. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is located — that it leased from the General Services Administration, which is responsible for securing buildings for government operations. He was the first archivist responsible for transferring presidential documents under the Presidential Records Act of 1978. Trump's attacks on the NARA process of preserving presidential records, Wilson said, was a "great danger" to democracy. Bush Presidential Library and Museum did not respond to Insider's request for comment.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris holds a roundtable with civil and reproductive rights leaders who are working to protect women's reproductive rights, in the Diplomatic Reception room in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, U.S., September 12, 2022. REUTERS/Evelyn HocksteinWASHINGTON, Sept 23 (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will discuss Taiwanese security during bilateral meetings with the leaders of Japan and South Korea when she visits the region next week, a senior administration official said on Friday. The conversations with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will come days after Chinese officials were roiled by an explicit pledge by U.S. President Joe Biden to defend the Chinese-claimed island. read more"We are very much aligned with our partners and this will be an opportunity for the vice president to discuss the recent developments and the way forward with the leaders of both Japan and the Republic of Korea," the official said. Taiwan's government strongly objects to China's sovereignty claims and says only the island's 23 million people can decide its future.
This piece has been adapted from "American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy,” by David Corn. Some reporters feared Goldwater supporters were about to storm the stage and physically attack the governor. The Republican Party — those then in control of it — thought otherwise. They were guided by what Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway once called “alternative facts.” For many of the Capitol Hill assailants, Trump and his paranoia had become a theology. Excerpted from "American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy."
Chief Justice John Roberts, one of the court’s six conservatives, pushed back against some of the criticism in a recent public appearance, saying people should not question the court’s legitimacy just because they disagree with its rulings. It is important that the public think the justices are reaching decisions in good faith based on the law, Girgis said. Sotomayor said at an event in California on Thursday that “there’s going to be some question about the court’s legitimacy” if people think the justices are acting based on politics, according to a Courthouse News Service report. But I don’t understand the connection between opinions people disagree with and the legitimacy of the court,” he said. Conversely, in 1954, Southern states resisted enforcing the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling, which ended segregation in public schools.

Is the Joke on Joe Biden?
  + stars: | 2021-10-02 | by ( Peter Funt | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
When Joe Biden says, “no joke,” as he so often does, he might as well be talking about the impact his first two years in office had on comedy. He has been the least lampooned president since Eisenhower—who, after all, didn’t have to worry about late-night monologues on multiple TV channels, YouTube mashups or savaging sketches on “Saturday Night Live.”But here’s the funny thing about President Biden: Politics aside, the guy is a genuinely amusing character, with plenty of what comedians call “hooks.” He’s an occasionally confused octogenarian, sometimes frisky with facts and inclined to spend five minutes telling a one-minute story. When he dons the type of dark aviator glasses that looked good on Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Joe Biden is comedy gold. Yet, until recently, comedians haven’t ripped him nearly as much as his supporters might fear and his opponents would wish.
