US Steel and Nippon Steel both indicated in statements that they’re open to legal fights to get the deal approved, no matter what actions is announced by Biden. Shares of US Steel (X) closed down 17.5% on the news at $29.37, well below the $55 a share that Nippon Steel agreed to pay for the stock back in December when the deal was announced. US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.

U.S. targets Russia over 2024 election influence operation

The DOJ said it was seizing 32 Internet domains "used in Russian government-directed foreign malign influence campaigns colloquially referred to as 'Doppelganger,' in violation of U.S. money laundering and criminal trademark laws." Those alleged efforts include the use of RT, the English-language media network backed by Russia, to influence U.S. opinion. The Biden administration on Wednesday announced sanctions targeting Russian government-backed efforts to manipulate American opinion leading up to the 2024 election. An unidentified Russia Today anchor prepares to go on the air in the RT TV studio in Moscow, June 8, 2018. Investigations later found that there was a coordinated effort by Russia to support his candidacy over the then-Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

Those two events are the kind of thing that, in normal times, are tracked mostly by economists and Wall Street types. For former President Donald Trump and the Republicans, the narrative is simple: Anything bad you’re feeling about inflation or the job market? Harris entered the race trailing Trump on a range of issues, including the economy. If that were the whole story, Trump might have a harder time disparaging Harris’ and President Joe Biden’s economic record. If the data doesn’t behave, however, then jobs — not inflation — may become the key economic narrative that Harris and Trump will start talking about in their stump speeches.

How Elon Musk’s endorsement of Trump may have backfired

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk listens to President Donald Trump during a meeting with business leaders in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, Feb. 3, 2017. "They want to make Trump, Elon and people like them look like plutocrats," he said. "Elon Musk created the opportunity that Donald Trump took to unmask himself as rabidly anti-union, and he did that by praising Elon Musk's anti-union, union-busting perspective and endorsing the idea of illegally firing striking workers," he said. Harris, who is not related to Kamala Harris, said he views Musk's endorsement as a net negative. "No one views Elon Musk as a voice of the middle class," he said.

State and local governments often lease or sell land to builders, including affordable housing developers, particularly in areas with high demand for homes. In a rare overlap of goals between the two campaigns, Harris and Trump have both proposed building housing on federal land. Some Republican lawmakers agree that more federal land should be used for homes. The Biden administration has proposed selling hundreds of acres of land in Nevada controlled by the Bureau of Land Management to local governments to build thousands of new homes. But repurposing federal land for new residential communities in Nevada would likely mean more sprawl, which comes with both environmental and economic concerns.

The previous indictment, which clocked in at 45 pages, had included what the US Supreme Court says is the kind of official-act evidence that can no longer be used in prosecuting presidents. The replacement indictment — which uses the same font and spans 36 pages — removes references to Trump's presidential acts with surgical precision, said Michael Bachner, a former Manhattan prosecutor and frequent commentator on Trump's legal travails. But in the new indictment, it's Trump the 2020 presidential candidate, not Trump the former president, who is charged. AdvertisementIn refiling his indictment, Smith was smart to convene a new grand jury rather than re-submit the case to the original panel. Still, the new indictment doesn't guarantee that judges won't throw out the case before it ever reaches a jury.

For years, I didn't enjoy eating at fine dining establishments. Here are three tips from Lewis and chefs in New York City and Washington D.C. for how to best enjoy your time at a fine dining restaurant. But many fine dining establishments offer pre-fixe meals with a set cost that isn't always available ahead of time or rotating menus, so it's not clear what will actually be served that night. "A lot of fine dining establishments may not be transparent about price on their website," Lewis says. You'll probably enjoy your meal more if you don't feel blindsided by a dish or its price.

WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign has tapped Yohannes Abraham for a top role in the presidential transition team, according to a source familiar with the planning. Covington and Burling LLP, the law firm where former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder works, will help the transition team get set up. Abraham's appointment comes as the General Services Administration prepares to engage the Harris and Trump campaigns in the presidential transition process. Federal law related to presidential transitions stipulates Sept. 1 as the deadline for GSA to enter into formal agreements with presidential transition teams. Several former Trump administration staffers are part of the groups behind Project 2025, but McMahon and Lutnick haven’t been connected to the effort.

This means that CD rates of 5% APY will likely decline and get less competitive. CD ladders can help you earn a great rate for longer, no matter what happens to CD rates. The best CD rates for short-term CDs are currently around 5% annual percentage yield, but that might not stay true for long. Building a CD ladder with terms paying 5% or moreRight now, short-term CDs offer better rates than long-term CDs, so our example CD ladder is shorter-term. With Hunter Biden on trial, special counsel spending grows
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Katelyn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Special counsel David Weiss’ office spent a total of $3.4 million over the past six months, a dramatic increase as it took Hunter Biden to trial in Delaware on gun-related charges and secured a conviction of the president’s son. Spending by two other Justice Department-appointed special counsels, Jack Smith and Robert Hur, decreased slightly compared with the six months prior. The disclosures come as courts have upped their scrutiny of special counsel office operations. Hunter Biden and another defendant in a separate criminal case have so far been unsuccessful in attempting to challenge special counsel Weiss’ authority. Challengers including Trump have argued that shouldn’t be allowed because Congress didn’t specifically sign off on the special counsel offices.

The situation has prompted Hunter Biden to add noted defense attorney Mark Geragos, who runs his firm out of Los Angeles, for the tax trial. The Delaware trial lasted seven days, but a tax trial is expected to last much longer, meaning at a far greater cost for the defendant. A previous deal between Hunter Biden and special counsel David Weiss to avoid trials and potentially prison time a year ago fell apart in dramatic fashion. Lunden Roberts, the mother of one of Hunter Biden’s children whom he had a child support battle over, has also been subpoenaed to testify, her lawyer says. The U.S. has approved $20 billion in arms sales to Israel, including scores of fighter jets and advanced air-to-air missiles, the State Department announced Tuesday. However, the weapons are not expected to get to Israel anytime soon, they are contracts that will take years to fulfill. Much of what is being sold is to help Israel increase its military capability in the long term. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives," the State Department said in a release on the sale. It has curbed one delivery of 2,000-pound weapons amid continued airstrikes by Israel in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza.
