Increasing your physical activity levels could extend your life by several years, a new study has found. skynesher/E+/Getty ImagesMany studies have examined the connections between physical activity and longevity. The activity levels in that study were measured with accelerometers — wearable activity-tracking devices. Total activity levels in the lowest quartile were equivalent to walking for 49 minutes at roughly 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) per hour daily. Total activity levels in the second-, third- and fourth-highest quartiles were equivalent to 78, 105 and 160 minutes, respectively.

The conversation on Friday was the first time Scholz had spoken with Putin in two years. It comes as the German leader gears up for a snap election and Europe waits to hear US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan for ending the war in Ukraine. “He stressed Germany’s unbroken determination to back Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression for as long as necessary,” the spokesperson added. Ukraine said however that phone conversations with Putin brought no added value on the path to achieving a “just peace” in Ukraine. But of course, (it is a) question about how Russia spins it.”Scholz to brief alliesThe Kremlin said Putin had told Scholz Russia was willing to look at energy deals if Germany was interested.

Tokyo (AP) — Japanese Princess Yuriko, the wife of wartime Emperor Hirohito’s brother and the oldest member of the imperial family, has died after her health deteriorated recently, palace officials said. Yuriko died Friday at a Tokyo hospital, the Imperial Household Agency said. Imperial Household Agency/APThe 1947 Imperial House Law, which largely preserves conservative prewar family values, allows only males to take the throne and forces female royal family members who marry commoners to lose their royal status. She enjoyed exercise in the morning while watching a daily fitness program on television, the Imperial Household Agency says. If this year's closures are any indication — and if the economy worsens — they won't be alone. 2025 is still more than a month away, but it's already shaping up to be another rocky year for retail. Analysts at UBS project the total number of US retail closures could reach 45,000 over the next five years. For one thing, even healthy retailers like Walmart and Target periodically review and trim their store fleets in the normal course of business. In any event, the year hasn't even begun, but nearly 1,500 retail closures are slated — already roughly half the amount BI has tracked for full-year totals in recent years.

AdvertisementI book "positioning" flights instead of direct ones to save money on flying when I can. Doing this has helped me find cheaper business-class flights, but it doesn't save me time. I've flown over 1.5 million miles, and one of my favorite ways to save money on airfare (and get into business class on a budget) is with "positioning" flights. Booking these flights can take quite a bit of researchPlaying with positioning flights isn't for the faint of heart. AdvertisementBut when positioning flights, you have to check how much it will cost to get to your intermediary airport.

CNN —Hezbollah is considering a US-Israeli ceasefire proposal, sources told CNN, as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group intensify. The US ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, relayed the proposal to the Lebanese government on Thursday night, a Lebanese official familiar with the discussions told CNN. Those efforts were upended when Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a major bombing attack in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Another Lebanese official familiar with the discussions around the ceasefire told CNN that US President-elect Donald Trump has endorsed the ongoing negotiations, which have been spearheaded by the Biden administration’s special envoy to Lebanon, Amos Hochstein. The US embassy in Beirut declined CNN’s request for comment on the ceasefire negotiations.

The Thursday night disclosure to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed that financial firm ARC Global Investments II and its manager, Patrick Orlando, no longer own more than 5% of Trump Media stock. Trump Media reported in early September that ARC owned over 11 million shares, equating to 5.4% of the company's outstanding stock. In mid-September, a Delaware judge found that Trump Media breached an agreement with ARC and must grant it additional shares. Trump Media, which operates the Truth Social app, suffered a major selloff in late summer and by the end of September was trading near its post-merger lows. But it saw a major stock rally in October that recovered most of those losses.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team was in the middle of announcing new Cabinet picks this week when they were informed of a sexual assault allegation about one of his previous selections, Pete Hegseth, stunning several members of Trump’s team who have since raised questions about the viability of his nomination, according to two people close to the situation. Within 48 hours, the heads of Trump’s transition team were brought a complaint about a sexual assault allegation regarding Hegseth. The campaign was brought information that aligns with what Monterey, California, police described as an investigation into “an alleged sexual assault” involving Hegseth on October 8, 2017. Wiles asked Hegseth if there were any other issues the team should be aware of moving forward. One source insisted that despite the surprise, the president-elect and the transition team were moving forward with the nomination at this time.

Trump nominated Wray in 2017 after firing James Comey, but he began to sour on him before he left office in 2021. The 10-year term is designed to keep the FBI director position insulated from political whims. “Kash is frightening at the bureau,” one source familiar with internal deliberations about the role of FBI director. Trump also briefly considered installing Patel as deputy FBI director in the closing weeks of his first administration. The deputy FBI director job is a career position, and not a political appointee, and Attorney General William Barr helped talk Trump out of putting Patel at the bureau.

That is just one reason why policy experts see a retirement savings crisis on tap for so many Americans over the next several decades. This results in an increase in retirement income of $150 per month,” Gusto’s researchers wrote. Initial data also suggests that the introduction of auto IRAs might correlate with more employers offering their own plans. It’s not entirely clear why, since smaller businesses often cite cost and administrative burden as reasons why they don’t sponsor a retirement plan. And employer plans offer workers tax breaks and direct matching contributions, which can help them grow their nest eggs faster than they otherwise might.

The global 60/40 strategy has seen a 27% cumulative return since 2022 through Oct. 31, according to Vanguard data. Traditionally, stocks and bonds move in opposite directions, which helps lower the volatility of this traditional portfolio. But that didn't work in 2022, when stocks and bonds both suffered and the 60/40 tanked, which had many declaring the strategy dead. The 60/40 portfolio tends to be shorthand for a balanced, diversified portfolio, with specific allocations based on investors' individual needs. For instance, Morningstar's index that reflects a 60/40 portfolio is up about 15% year to date.

Gold traded little changed on Friday, but was set for its worst week in more than three years, hurt by a stronger U.S. dollar amid expectations of fewer Federal Reserve rate cuts. Spot gold rose 0.1% to $2,569.69 per ounce by 0308 GMT after a five-session slide. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Thursday steady economic growth, a strong job market, and persistent inflation justify caution in cutting rates quickly. With a quiet U.S. calendar next week, gold could rebound, potentially retesting $2,600 level, Simpson said. Spot silver rose 0.2% to $30.52 per ounce, platinum edged up 0.1% to $940.68 and palladium added 0.5% to $946.00.
