A lead prosecutor and a judge involved in separate criminal cases against Donald Trump received violent threats within two days of the former president warning that he was "coming after" his foes, court documents allege. Prosecutors allege Arthur Hanson, 59, of Huntsville, Alabama, delivered the threats in voicemails left for Willis and Labat on Aug. 6. Smith cited the same post in a September court filing seeking a gag order against Trump. Later in August, Trump was booked and had his mugshot taken at Fulton County jail, which was run by Labat. Trump was already facing dozens of felony counts in three other criminal cases by the time he was charged in Georgia.

Mr. Cohen’s second day was bumpier. Under questioning from one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Mr. Cohen appeared flustered and admitted to several past lies, including before a judge when he was sentenced to prison for federal crimes in 2018. The two-day spectacle offered a preview of how Mr. Cohen, who once idolized Mr. Trump but now loathes him, might perform on the bigger stage of the criminal trial. It also captured the trade-offs for prosecutors of calling a witness like Mr. Cohen, a felon who can nonetheless offer an insider’s account of Mr. Trump’s conduct. Mr. Cohen became so worried about the lack of assistance that his lawyer, E. Danya Perry, prepared him to object on his own behalf.

HONG KONG, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's efforts to revive its shrinking stock market are mere stopgap solutions, as analysts say a reversal in fortunes for Asia's premier financial hub would not be possible without a major improvement in China's economic prospects. With a market value of around $4.3 trillion, Hong Kong is home to one of the top-ranked stock markets globally just behind those in the United States, Japan, China and Europe. New share offerings in Hong Kong have fizzled. Local media reported that a record 47 of the 638 trading participants on the Hong Kong exchange shut shop last year. Chinese firms listed in Hong Kong, such as tech giants Tencent (0700.HK) and Alibaba (9988.HK), comprise the bulk of the turnover on the Hong Kong exchange, leaving Hong Kong hostage to China's fortunes.

China's decision may escalate trade disputes globally and spur other countries to prioritize research into alternative sources and materials, industry executives said. "We see China's move as a potential catalyst to highlight the urgency of improving (U.S.) graphite supply," said John DeMaio, president of Graphex Group's (6128.HK) graphene division. It has graphite supply deals with Syrah Resources (SYR.AX) and is looking for other sources, DeMaio said. Synthetic graphite could account for nearly two-thirds of the EV battery anode market by 2025, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates. Chief Operating Officer Hans Erik Vatne told Reuters recently that developing synthetic graphite production is costly, but that is the price to pay to reduce reliance on China.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Museum of Art has sued New York City authorities over their seizure of a headless bronze statue believed to depict the Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius. The museum argues in its suit that the statue was lawfully obtained and that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office has no legal authority to seize it. The 76-inch (1.9-meter) statue dates from A.D. 180 to 200 and is worth $20 million, according to the district attorney’s office. Museum spokesman Todd Mesek said it does not discuss ongoing litigation but noted the museum takes provenance issues very seriously. Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from A.D. 161 to 180 and was a Stoic philosopher whose “Meditations” have been studied over the centuries.

Attorney Ross Goodman told The Associated Press Wednesday he'll appear in Duane “Keffe D” Davis' defense against accusations that Davis orchestrated the drive-by killing of the rap music icon. Davis won't immediately enter a plea, Goodman said, he'll seek another two weeks to confirm that he'll be hired for Davis' case. It is a problem that five U.S. state and federal judges are wrestling with as Trump faces four upcoming criminal trials and a civil fraud case. New York state Justice Arthur Engoron already has faced off with Trump on the issue. Trump has cast doubt on Chutkan's ability to give him a fair trial and called her "highly partisan." Ahead of his civil fraud trial, Trump, without providing evidence, accused the U.S. Justice Department of coordinating with New York state Attorney General Letitia James to damage his presidential campaign. One notable exception to Trump's criticism is the judge presiding over the classified documents criminal case in Florida.

Former President Donald Trump wants a New York judge to dismiss the criminal case against him charging that he falsified business records relating to hush money payments, arguing prosecutors waited too long to bring their case. "The delay has prejudiced President Trump, interfered with his ongoing presidential campaign, and violated his due process rights," the filing by Trump attorneys Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles contends, and the charges should therefore be dismissed. That information was hush money paid to two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump. In their filing, Trump's lawyers contended it was accurate. Trump has pleaded not guilty in both federal cases and denied wrongdoing in the AG's civil case.

Dollar rides Treasury yields higher, yen battered
  + stars: | 2023-09-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The dollar traded near a 10-month high against its major peers on Wednesday as Treasury yields stayed elevated on the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. rates, while the yen stumbled towards a closely-watched intervention zone. "The U.S. dollar is stickier to the upside than the downside," said Tina Teng, market analyst at CMC Markets. The elevated U.S. yields have spelt trouble for the yen , which edged marginally higher to 149.01 per dollar, after having slipped to a 11-month low of 149.185 on Tuesday. The dollar/yen pair tends to be extremely sensitive to changes in long-term U.S. Treasury yields, particularly on the 10-year front. "Even if there were intervention, it won't drive dollar/yen down permanently unless bond yields start to retreat in earnest too."

NEW YORK (AP) — A dozen years ago, Barkley L. Hendricks, the pioneering portrait artist known for vivid, stylish paintings of Black men and women, stood outside the Frick Collection in Manhattan, known for its works by European Old Masters. Still, curators say, he'd likely have never imagined that in 2023, he’d be the first artist of color to have a solo show at the 88-year-old Frick. What is more unusual is that a museum focusing on the 14th through 19th centuries would devote a show to a contemporary portraitist like Hendricks. His sunglasses reflect the buildings outside Hendricks' studio, and even contain a tiny reflection of the artist himself. “Slick” features the artist in a white suit against a white background, wearing a cap of African design.
