The coffin of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is carried out of the Westminster Abbey in London on September 19, 2022, during the State Funeral Service. The funeral of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was held in London Monday, bringing to an end the country's Elizabethan era. The state funeral, which was attended by hundreds of global dignitaries, marks a display of ceremony unseen in the U.K. in decades. A congregation of around 500 kings and queens, prime ministers and presidents gathered in London to pay their respects to the late queen, alongside the King and Queen Consort and other members of the British royal family. Britain's longest-serving monarch is being laid to rest Monday, 11 days after she died at Balmoral Castle at age 96.

Some kept their heads bowed, others wiped away tears as Britain said goodbye to its longest serving monarch, who died on Sept. 8 aged 96. Gurminder Kaur got up early to drive from Essex in southeast England to Windsor, where the queen will be buried later on Monday. “The (London) queue had a festival atmosphere, and you just had the adrenaline keeping you going," Kaur said.
Windsor Castle is the resting place of more than a dozen English and British kings and queens. Most are buried in St. George's Chapel, including Henry VIII, who died in 1547, and Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649. The queen will be buried at the King George VI Memorial Chapel, which is next to the quire of the main St George's Chapel. St George's Chapel hosted the funerals of Philip, the queen's father, her grandfather George V, and great-grandfather Edward VII. Prince William, now heir to the throne, was confirmed there.
Since the queen's death on Sept. 8, politics - or at least the discussion of its ins and outs - has been on pause for a period of national mourning, out of respect for a monarch who reigned for 70 years. read moreAnd while her spokespeople were diligent in declining to make announcements during the national mourning period, her government pressed on with its work, with one source saying her ministers were in the finance ministry even on Sunday. He may also announce the end to caps on bankers' bonuses, but last week no decisions had been taken. While foreign minister, Truss described the relationship as "special, but not exclusive". For a woman who said she would be ready to govern from day one, she has set herself a tough agenda.
