Twice in my life, I've attempted to retire, and both times, I've been tempted back into full-time work. Both my husband and I had done very well in our jobs, so I was fortunate enough to be able to retire early. By the age of 40, I'd worked my way to the top as a financial planner. CNN —After more than five decades at the forefront of United States foreign policy, President Joe Biden may have hoped to use his speech to over a hundred world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to burnish both his own legacy and the country’s leadership on the world stage. “The world has changed, and the world’s gotten more difficult in many ways,” one senior administration official said. Election loomingIn New York, world leaders will find themselves grappling with the growing list of global flashpoints – all while an election just weeks away looms over the US’ role as the democratic world’s champion, benefactor and leading arms supplier. While Biden will be formally representing the US at the table, former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are separately meeting with world leaders to bolster relationships and outline their own goals. This will be followed by a meeting focused on Ukraine reconstruction with world leaders – a critical topic ahead of Biden’s meeting with Zelensky later this week.

Australia's central bank keeps rates on hold, stays hawkish

Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at the central bank's building in Sydney, Australia on May 2, 2022. The hawkish stance sent the Australian dollar 0.4% higher to $0.6864, the highest this year, and markets pared the chance of a December rate cut to 59% from 64% before the decision. Markets had wagered heavily on a steady outcome given underlying inflation remained sticky and the labor market held up surprisingly well. Governor Michele Bullock has used every opportunity recently to stress that the central bank does not expect a near-term rate cut. The RBA already trails other central bank in cutting rates, and the political pressure is ramping up for an easing.

US to return 297 antiquities to India
  + stars: | 2024-09-23 | by ( Chris Lau | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —The US is returning 297 history-spanning antiquities stolen or smuggled from India, many dating back centuries. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamline the process to return stolen antiquities back to India. “Prime Minister (Modi) thanked President Biden for his support in the return of these artifacts,” the India’s Ministry of External Affairs said. India has faced an uphill battle in protecting its valuable cultural treasures from looters, though it has been making headway in recent years. In 2022, the US returned 307 stolen treasures to India as part of a 15-year investigation into international trafficking networks.

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesIndia's commerce minister rejected the idea of joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world's largest trade deal, maintaining that it is not in the country's interest to be part of a free trade agreement with China. Negotiations for the RCEP started in 2013 and initially included India, which some members viewed as a counterbalance to China. However, in 2019, India chose not to join RCEP, citing unresolved "core interest" issues. Goyal noted that at that time, India already had a free trade agreement with ASEAN, Japan and Korea, as well as a bilateral trade with New Zealand worth $300 million. "It was not in our farmers' interest, RCEP did not reflect the aspirations of our small and micro medium industries and sector, and in some form, was nothing but a free trade agreement with China," he said.
