Bloomingdale's is just one of the retailers and brands trying to tap into Barbie buzz. With a splash of hot pink, retailers hope to chase away the summer doldrums and inflation blues. About half of Aldo's Barbie collection sold out in the first week. So far, the Barbie merchandise is "selling incredibly well" and appealing to customers across generations, said Frank Berman, the department store's chief marketing officer. Gap has sold out of some of its popular Barbie items, including rectangular pink sunglasses.

July 18 (Reuters) - OpenAI is committing $5 million to the American Journalism Project (AJP) under a partnership that will look for ways to support local news through artificial intelligence, the Microsoft-backed startup said on Tuesday. The deal will also give the non-profit and related organizations up to $5 million in OpenAI credits for the use of the technology popularized by ChatGPT. "With this partnership, we aim to promote ways for AI to enhance — rather than imperil — journalism," said Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP. AJP is a venture philanthropy that provides grants to local nonprofit news organizations, to help sustain their newsrooms. To date, it has raised $139 million from local and national funders to address the U.S.' local news crisis, and backed 41 nonprofit local news organizations across the country.

[1/2] Supporters of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) wait for their candidates at a nomination center ahead of the general elections in Singapore September 1, 2015. Analysts said the events may not bode well for the PAP, which has ruled Singapore uninterrupted since 1959. "These events appear to have created some public speculation about the PAP's approach to privilege, restraint, and authority," said National University of Singapore political scientist Chong Ja Ian. Prime minister-in-waiting Lawrence Wong said the government would be forthcoming about the corruption case - even if the information was damaging or embarrassing. But political scientist Walid Jumblatt Abdullah at Nanyang Technological University said Lee had enough political goodwill to ride this out.

She predicts generative AI will be a permanent part of her marketing strategy in four to six months. The art was created by generative AI and touched up by a human artist. SAP's marketing team also used generative AI for tasks that are less splashy, more internally-oriented, but just as important. In one exercise, SAP employees used generative AI to create a script for product demos, but the scripts occasionally referenced products that didn't actually exist. Part of this consideration includes figuring out whether to continue partnering with generative AI solution providers or build the tools internally.

July 13 (Reuters) - News publisher Associated Press said on Thursday it had reached an agreement with OpenAI to share select news content and technology, as the two firms explore the use of generative AI in news products. The arrangement involves OpenAI licensing part of AP's text archive, while AP will leverage the ChatGPT-maker's technology, according to a statement, which added that AP does not use generative AI for its news stories. "News organizations must have a seat at the table ... so that newsrooms large and small can leverage this technology to benefit journalism,” said Kristin Heitmann, AP's senior vice president and chief revenue officer. A new AP report details how Sonia Sotomayor's book sales intertwine with her service as a Justice. "250 books is definitely not enough," one aide told a public library in Oregon. The report found that taxpayer-funded staff at the Supreme Court have often pressured public institutions, including colleges and libraries, to purchase more of Sotomayor's books for events around the country where the liberal justice has been invited to speak. But because Supreme Court has no formal code of ethics, such practices are legal. While Republicans have generally defended these arrangements, Democrats have seized on the revelations to call for instituting a formal code of ethics at the Supreme Court.

Wall Street analysts continued to favor Meta Platforms (META) over Alphabet (GOOGL), sending shares of META up more than 3% and GOOGL shares just slightly higher Tuesday. Analysts at both firms expressed concern over how the implementation of generative AI might hurt search-related ad revenues and boost expenses. That said, Bernstein and UBS both also acknowledge that longer-term generative AI may very well prove a tailwind for Alphabet. META YTD mountain Meta Platforms YTD performance Meta Platforms, meanwhile, has been getting better reviews. "We believe SHEIN's momentum to continue, and the company could take major market share from US Softlines companies. Elsewhere, UBS data showed Shein was the second most-downloaded shopping app in the U.S. over the past month behind Temu.com. Their campaign got a shot in the arm in May when Congress trounced BJP in a key state election, exceeding expectations and gaining fresh momentum ahead of more state elections due this year and national elections in April-May 2024. Gandhi said the fight against BJP was an "ideological battle" and opposition parties were united in it. India's opposition parties have formed alliances to challenge governments - led by both Congress and BJP - in the past and win elections but have a mixed record of sticking together and running governments smoothly. BJP leaders said they were not worried as there was little hope for such alliances. "I want to tell leaders of the opposition, join as many hands as you want but opposition unity is not possible.

TikTok has grown like a weed for years, prompting Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to pull another clone out of this social-media bag. That service, known as Reels, is beginning to make headway against TikTok, according to a new survey by Morgan Stanley. BRUSSELS, June 8 (Reuters) - EU industry chief Thierry Breton will meet Meta Platforms (META.O) Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on June 23 and demand that he act immediately to tackle content targeting children, as Meta's voluntary child protection code seemed not to be working. Social media platforms such as Meta's Instagram, ByteDance's TikTok, Snap's (SNAP.N) Snapchat and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) YouTube have stirred concerns among regulators and users over content targeted at young children. "#Meta’s voluntary code on child protection seems not to work," Breton said in a Twitter post. Breton said Meta would also have to demonstrate the measures it plans to take to comply with European Union online content rules known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) after Aug. 25 or face heavy sanctions. The DSA bans certain types of targeted advertisements on online platforms such as those meant for children or when they use special categories of personal data, such as ethnicity, political views and sexual orientation.

The debt ceiling deal could lead nearly 750,000 adults to lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits. SNAP benefits, or food stamps, give monthly funds to low-income individuals and families for food purchases. CBPP noted that high denial rates and long wait times for receipt of disability benefits has made accessing SNAP benefits increasingly difficult. CBPP research noted that the existing work-reporting requirement does not increase employment or earnings but do lead thousands to lose their food benefits. Are you an older American who relies on SNAP benefits and who could be affected by this change?
