In June, he was convicted on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. CNN —A man has died and up to nine other people are missing after a 10-story hotel collapsed in Argentina. Firefighters, paramedics and police were working to remove debris in order to reach people who are thought to be buried. The victim is thought to have been an 80-year-old man who lived in the building next to the collapsed hotel, minister of security of the province of Buenos Aires Javier Alonso said on the TN news channel. The missing include workers from a construction site at the hotel that was apparently operating “clandestinely, without complying with municipal regulations,” according to the statement. Emergency workers are trying to free up to nine people believed to be trapped in the rubble.

CNN —Authorities are investigating after at least two ballot boxes were set on fire Monday morning in the Portland, Oregon, area. Police responded to a call about a fire in Portland about 3:30 a.m. Monday, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement. An “incendiary device” was placed inside the box and security personnel extinguished the fire, officials said. A second ballot box was set on fire early Monday morning at a bus station in nearby Vancouver, Washington, according to the Vancouver Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a “suspicious device” next to the box, which was smoking and on fire, police said.

CNN —Five people, including three children, have been injured in a stabbing attack in Beijing, Chinese police reported Monday. The incident occurred at around 3.20 p.m. local time (3.20 a.m. Police said the incident occurred at the intersection of Wanquanzhuang Road and Wanliu Middle Road. The country of 1.4 billion has generally low violent crime rates, but has been rocked by a number of high-profile stabbing cases in recent decades. Several have targeted schools, including a 2020 knife attack at an elementary school, as well as attacks at or near kindergartens in 2022 and 2023.

CNN —Chris Brown’s history of violence is back in the spotlight with a new documentary focusing on years-old accusations against the singer, including his 2009 assault of Rihanna. The report prompted a police investigation that could have threatened Brown’s probation, but no charge was ever filed. CNN —The mayor of a northern Austrian town was shot dead on Monday morning and the suspect is on the run, local police said. Franz Hofer, mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau, was killed in Altenfelden, near the border with Germany and the Czech Republic. A second man was also shot dead at a later time, Upper Austria police spokesperson Ulrike Handelbauer told CNN. “Unfortunately, we assume that the perpetrator we are looking for could be carrying the weapon,” Handelbauer said, according to local media. Police told CNN that the trigger of the crime appeared to be a dispute over hunting rights.
