Mortgage rates have been holding steady so far this week, but they could fluctuate on Thursday when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases June's Consumer Price Index data. If this index shows that inflation slowed last month, rates could ease. As inflation slows and the Federal Reserve is able to start lowering the federal funds rate, mortgage rates are expected to go down. This should remove some of the upward pressure off of mortgage rates and allow them to trend down more substantially. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

New York CNN —In lower Manhattan, a jury is now weighing a case against a little-known investor who made it big, lost everything, and briefly brought Wall Street to its knees. His positions were so large that when the stocks started falling, it had a seismic effect on the market. Why the Fed is stressed about presidential elections

New York CNN —Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell sent investors mixed messages on Tuesday during his semiannual testimony to Congress. Powell is stressed about the election: Powell was asked by multiple senators about White House politics, which he dodged. While the Fed head noted that policy decisions are data dependent, “elevated inflation is not the only risk we face,” he said. The September Fed meeting will be “live”: Powell noted multiple times that every Fed policy decision is made “live” using the latest available economic data – in other words, decisions aren’t made in advance. About 75% of investors think the Fed will cut rates, and about 25% think they’ll remain the same.

The company on Tuesday is launching a major overhaul of the policies that govern its site to make it "crystal clear" to shoppers what products belong on Etsy, Silverman said in an interview with CNBC. The changes include new labels on its website and app to show how each seller created a particular item. "We're positioning ourselves to answer the call for original goods and real people by dialing up the things that make Etsy, Etsy," Silverman said. In December, Etsy laid off 11% of its workforce, with Silverman citing the "very challenging macro and competitive environment" as reasons for the cuts.

New York CNN —Boeing said it sold just 14 new jets in the past month, with most of those coming as freighter sales. It had come into the year with a record sales month in December, but sales ground to a virtual halt following the Alaska Air incident. That certification, originally expected this year, has been pushed back to at least 2025 by the problems brought to light by the Alaska Air incident. The company agreed Sunday to plead guilty to its employees defrauding the FAA during the original certification process for the 737 Max. The plane it sold to Alaska Air is also a 737 Max 10 to replace the plane that lost the door plug in January.

Roth individual retirement account conversions are a popular way to reduce future levies on pretax 401(k) or IRA withdrawals — and you can smooth out the upfront tax hit with a "Roth conversion ladder," experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which offers future tax-free growth. The trade-off is regular income taxes incurred that year on the converted balance. By comparison, a Roth conversion ladder is a series of conversions over multiple years, meaning "you're paying taxes in smaller increments," said certified financial planner Preston Cherry, founder and president of Concurrent Financial Planning in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Of course, boosting your adjusted gross income any year can trigger other tax consequences, such as phaseouts for certain tax breaks.

Whether you're mid-career or nearing retirement, it's important to know where you're investing — and how those accounts could impact future taxes, experts say. Many workers are heavily concentrated in tax-deferred savings via a pretax 401(k) plan or traditional individual retirement accounts, which incur regular income taxes on future withdrawals, based on federal tax brackets. However, many advisors push for using a mix of pretax, after-tax Roth and taxable brokerage accounts for more flexibility in retirement. The right mix can provide "a lot of different levers to pull to manage your adjusted gross income," explained certified financial planner Judy Brown at SC&H Group in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area. Medicare Part B and Part D premiums are based on so-called modified adjusted gross income, which is your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, from two years prior.

Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty ImagesGovernment bond markets in France saw some selling early on Monday, but were fairly muted overall despite political gridlock after a second round of legislative elections. Jitters have spread through France's bond market in recent weeks. The 10-year yield topped 3.3% — a roughly 8-month high — after French President Emmanuel Macron called the snap parliamentary election in the middle of June. Meanwhile, the gap (or spread) between French bond yields and German bond yields had topped 85 basis points in recent weeks, hitting its highest level since 2012. He added that the chances of a confrontation with Brussels remained with the left-wing alliance, but not to the same extent as if the National Rally had won.

London CNN —French stocks and government bonds struggled to find direction Monday following surprise results in France’s parliamentary elections, which saw left-wing parties outperform the far right Sunday, leaving the country’s parliament facing gridlock. The yield, or return sought by investors, on benchmark 10-year bonds rose by a fraction of a percentage point to 3.22% by 8.09 a.m. But the premium traders demand to hold French bonds instead of the ultra-safe German equivalents was lower on the day. However, it was still a lot higher than before French President Emmanuel Macron called the snap elections on June 9. "Big picture - pricing and margin trajectory reinforces [overweight] thesis, top pick in media & entertainment," wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne, referring to the audio streaming giant. The firm's $370 price target suggests 17% upside from Friday's close, while a $450 bull scenario implies that shares can rally 42%. The analyst also highlighted Spotify's leading product position, solid user growth runway and underappreciated earnings power among the reasons for the bullish thesis. Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall reiterated his overweight rating on Spotify and his $400 price target, citing long-term margin potential spurred by price hikes and a "margin accretive dynamic" with labels. Macron had called for a new legislative nationwide vote in France after the country's far-right party made significant gains in the European Union election last month. The gamble that French President Emmanuel Macron took when he called a snap election has not paid off, according to Armin Steinbach, Jean Monnet professor of EU Law and economics at HEC Paris. Macron's centrist Ensemble bloc is set to make up the second-largest group in parliament, followed by the RN and its allies. Just because the far-right did not perform as they had hoped in this election does not mean they should be discounted for the presidential election in 2027, Steinbach added.
